The crab soup was great! If I come back, it will be for that dish. I came here for Sunday brunch with the family. We happened to be on the street while hunting Pokemon. (Lots of Pokestops near by, btw.). We had crab soup, breakfast sandwich (bacon, egg and Gouda), eggs Benedict, and crabcake sandwich. Each entree came with a side, which was surprising based on the menu. The crabcake sandwich had way too much bun, but the crabcake itself was basically pure lump crab, which is good. The breakfast sandwich was a pretty good deal for six bucks. The eggs Benedict came on a croissant, and my wife thought it lacked flavor. Service was very nice. They put up with our fussy two year old. The location is in a charming cobblestone stoned section of Cary street near Shockhoe Bottom.

OMG! Where do I start. I will not go there again. I have been there a few times. Seafood is my favorite food to eat. Their food is not worth my time. Everything was either salty as hell or has absolutely no flavor.

I went here twice during my stay in Richmond. The atmosphere was cozy, yet sophisticated, and the food was delicious. It's a great place to sit with friends and family and talk for hours over drinks and great food.

AMAZING food and the ambiance is warm and inviting. I was actually visiting from out of town and just decided to make a reservation there, but had no idea it was in a fancy area of Richmond business district. SO...Why 4 stars? The waiter. I had actually gone in there at 8 at night and they were closing by 10 p.m. so there was barely anybody in there. The waiter seemed more intent on getting us to leave and it was only 9:30pm. I was a waiter and I hate that behavior. It's rude and kills a dining experience. No one likes to feel like they're being thrown out after spending over $150 on food.

Headed over to Sam Miller's for a team lunch earlier this week and couldn't have had a better experience! Both the food and service were great and we will definitely be back. Highly recommend the crab dip and crab cake sandwich!

The food was phenomenal and the bartender/waitress(Andrea)was the most bubbly person I've ever met. NY strip and the rockfish is top of the line. Food took a little while to come, but it was well worth the wait. Places like this makes me miss Richmond and the quality restaurants it has hidden everywhere.

This probably used to be a pretty decent restaurant, but the food really wasn't much to write home about. The best part of or meal was the burger and fries. Skip the world famous crab soup and ocean salad, the former was pastey, and the later felt like it had been on the shelf for at least a day or two.

Just went for happy hour. They had a decent selection of local beers on draft and all the standards in bottles. They were out of a lot of the drafts, though. May have just been delivery day or something. The bartender/waitress was very nice and apologetic. Overall not a bad place to grab a drink. I'd go back.

Sam Miller's food is always fresh & good!! The oyster po' boy is hearty & delicious! The salads are huge! We usually go for lunch & sometimes it takes long for the food to be served. The staff are always very efficient& pleasant.

Easily the worst food I ve had in RVA yet. Went here for Valentine s Day as we heard great things about this place especially in regards to their seafood. We spent upwards of $200 dollars for two 3 course meals that had little to no flavor. Very unpleased with the special menu for vday. Service and drinks from bar were ok, but the food was absolutely horrible... would ve had better luck with a frozen microwave meal. Will not be coming back.

Food was delicious, tried the Oysters Rockefeller, grilled brussel sprouts, crab cakes dinner (ALL crabmeat) and Fillet as well. Service was great and atmosphere was decent, overall a great experience. Could've done without the 3 small kids running around like it was Romper Room at a $70+ a person restaurant though(minus 1 star). P.S. I'm unsure of where previous reviewer finds cafeteria food like they serve, but I'd like to find out.

The hot appetizer sampler was pretty good for starters but it ended up being the best part of the meal. My husband got the fish tacos with fries and I ordered the teriyaki salmon with cucumber tomato salad in tzatziki and a side of sweet More

It's a really nice space! I went to the, Tea Dance ( it was my first time there ) the service left a little to be desired... no. let me be honest! It was our first bartender that wasn't very attentive everybody else was very pleasant. I hope that there's many more of these tea dances to come over the next couple of months ,since the weather will be nice.

Very enjoyable lunch menu. I had the oyster po boy, and appreciated the remoulade spicing. Kathy had the chicken salad and cider on tap. Service was a bit slow for working people, but we were on holiday :)

Had one of my best experiences ever this afternoon with my longtime girlfriend and classmate from New York. Food/Service excellent as usual. Our waitress w/the fly silver short hairstyle couldn't have been kinder for our reunion! Couldn't think of a better place to reconnect!!

small portions their main course lacked flavor, and the amount of fries you get is the bare minimum. i had like 3 waiters, so i didn t know who to tip. i sat for a while before i got my bill.

We went for lunch in a Saturday. Fairly empty restaurant. Nothing to hate about the place, but it s definitely not great. Crab soup is yummy. Oyster Po boy sandwich ($15 and quite small) is good. Fried calamari is average. Shaved sirloin sandwich ($15) - don t order it. It s a dried out roast beef sub with a nearly unbearable taste. Service was good. The restaurant interior appears worn out and neglected, with wobbly tables etc. The building itself fits the historic charm of the Shockoe area. We enjoyed our lunch, but nothing here calls for a return visit or a recommendation to others.

Had a great experience at lunch during COVID-19 restriction. The Baja fish tacos and the crab soup were both amazing and a must have! Also, the restaurant team has maintained all restriction and mandates put in place but the state government so you can rest assured you will feel safe and well taken care of. They also offer take out and from what I heard will be offering delivery very soon.

My wife and I had a wonderful experience. We were delayed one day on our move to Italy, and had the opportunity to celebrate our anniversary eve at Sam Millers. The waitress was wonderful and the environment was fantastic. Great restaurant with a lot of history. And to top it off... Loved the food.

Mother's Day Brunch--3 children, 5 adults: GREAT MENU for families! Lots of variety, & everyone left full and happy. Attentive service, not hovering or ignoring. Nice atmosphere for lunch, with enough room for kids to move around and adults not to feel cramped. Way Better Prices than the place we went last year! We will definitely do this again next year.

Food is good and priced at what you would expect for downtown Richmond. However, raw oysters on the half-shell are incredibly expensive. $2.50 per oyster, that means a dozen will set you back $30! I've been to many places that serve oysters by the dozen at less than half that price. This place is billed as an "Oyster Bar", unless you want to drop some serious cash, get the poor boy oyster sandwich instead.

Was eager to try a Richmond landmark for Valentine's Day, but left disappointed. They had a set three course menu, but I was advised while making my reservations that you could order off the regular menu. Maybe it's the cocktail movement in Richmond, but I was disappointed that they did not have a cocktail menu. The crab soup contained maybe two pieces of crab meat. The portion sizes of the entrees were laughable. I ordered the filet medallions and half lobster. I just went back to their website to confirm it said medallions because I got one that might have totaled two ounces and the half lobster was about three bites. On a positive note, the asparagus and fingerling potatoes were pretty good and were the highlight of the meal. My wife's plate of oscar filet did look pretty good, but her medium filet was cooked well to well done. Service wasn't terrible but it wasn't good. Took too long to get refills on water and beer. A table next to us sat for fifteen minutes before a waiter realized they were there. I hope Sam Millers can survive but they might need to totally revamp their menu and service to do so. Or maybe it was just a bad night.

Will never give this place my business! I made an online reservation for me, my wife, and daughter. When I got there the host told me they were not seating the public, because the had a party going on. When started to respond a lady walked up that looked like a manager ,and proceeded to say the same. I finally got to respond and said then why the hell are you still taking reservations if you cannot honor them? They just stood there looking dumbfounded. I walked out, and made my mind up to never give my business there. Also the lady was very rude with her tone of voice when she told me. No sorry or nothing from either of them.

My partner and I were staying next door at the Berkeley (which is a wonder hotel) for his birthday. The front desk had seen my comment about champagne for our room and said that though the hotel kitchen was closed she knew a wonderful place I could get some from. She called Sam Miller s for me and I spoke with Andrea who helped me pick out a bottle of champagne and said she d bring it over in 15 minutes (to give us time to park and get to our room). Not only did she bring the champagne but also champagne flutes and even a piece of cake which tasted wonderful! Later that night we decided to go here for dinner. Andrea was our server and she remembered me from before even wishing my partner a happy birthday. It looked as though she was the only waitress in the restaurant. She was very attentive and bubbly, kept conversation up with us and recommended an appetizer which didn t disappoint. The chef came out from the kitchen twice to make sure everyone liked their food. I ordered the rockfish which was a large portion with a delicious sauce, rice and broccoli. My partner got the steak with fries (out of this world, so amazing!) and asparagus. He also got a side of scallops which were fresh and very well seasoned. The sides could have been a bit bigger especially for the price (about $30 per entree) but they were very well made. I would eat here again in a heart beat. Amazing food and sweet staff. Every was wearing masks and keeping a safe distance.

We had the Cosmopolitans, the classic and Manhattan drink with the oyster samplers mashed potatoes crab soup with a chicken Caesar salad. We only had light meals because we had previously eaten 1hr prior to going. However everything was still filling and really good! Our 2nd time eating here.. The 1st time was not so good maybe because it was take out but we decided to try it again... Pricy but not to bad for 2 people close to $100 including tips.. The staff was awesome and so was the owner! I will go back for dine in.. If you are visiting the area like we are you should try it.

Went there as a large group. (They were expecting us as reservations were made and our meals were prepaid) Meals were disgusting. Burgers were barely seared on outside and completely raw. I told blonde server our table would like them cooked well done. Her response was they re all cooked the same. My response was if they come out raw they re going back. Meals were brought out and she only had my plate in hand asking who asked for the well well well done burger as she slammed it in front of me. Also chips fell off a plate at our table 1/2 on the floor 1/2 on the servers tray. She picked them up with her fingers and put them back on the plate and served plate as was. Where was the health inspector!?! Seriously!! Bad food, very slim portions, disrespectful, unsanitary all the way around!!! STAY AWAY!!!! AND SAVE YOURSELF FROM GETTING SICK AND YOUR MONEY!!!! I did speak to the owner who apologized saying he would speak to the server that this was all unacceptable. Not to mention every soda ordered (different kinds) was completely flat. Dessert was gross as well......AVOID!!!!!

Burgers were raw, when requested to have it cooked more we were told no until complaining, brought out a burnt burger on a burnt bun, all soda was flat, server spilt chips on the floor and all over her tray, left chips on the floor, picked chips that were on the tray with bare hands and threw them on the plate and served it, small proportions, rude servers (complained about each other in front of customers), dessert was rubbery and not good, one person at our table was brought out a half of a proportion of the mystery dessert compared to another person at the table, only giving it 1 star because I have to.

Just no. On a trip, our group was given raw burgers and flat/watered down drinks. Along with many other events, staff was not friendly, reluctant to replace food such as said burgers, and got irritable when we asked for cooked burgers/when we talked to the owner.
