I'm giving a low rating because it's not the type of place we were looking for. It's really pricey and menu is limited.
Cool digs. Relaxing atmosphere. Nice servers. Great seafood lunch menu. Tons of drink options. Whenever I'm in RVA I drop by.
Rana made our first visit to Sam Miller's a memorable one. Thank you so much. Definitely go on a Sunday or Monday.
The oyster sampler was so delicious with the raw oysters being my favorite. I definitely recommend the scallops with bacon succotash! Service was warm and very friendly!
Jamie is a wonderful Oyster Special Cook! Jamie, thank you so much for such wonderful service. 5 stars for the crew and the excellent service and smiles you always bring to us. We love the Oyster Special Thursdays and I will tell my friends about Sam Miller ! Here s to brilliant service!
OMG, bacon lobster roll, special of the day. Nuff said.
I love this place. Great food, awesome staff, I've been a customer for years. I highly recommend it. Love the steamed muscles
Food was good but took twice as long as it needed to. We had about 8 people in our group and other people around us ordered, received there food and finished before we got our food. Especially considering most of us had a salad or sandwich. The salad was huge and tasted good. The services was also good and they were really good about coming around to refill drinks regularly.
Excellent oysters. Excellent crab soup. The seared scallops were cooked perfectly. Recommended if you haven't been there.
Great place for a wedding reception! Enjoyed our visit.
Awesome bartender!!!! Have no clue why it was dead when I was there, great place
We had fabulous service and a wonderful meal! Possibly our new favorite place!
Really good Oysters, a few good craft IPAs on draft. My Thursday go to. 1st half doz are free, then .50 each.
I wish I could give it a better review because I like to see local businesses succeed. Only reason I give it the second star is because the food was mostly fine. Went there for Valentine's dinner which was a prix fixe menu (should've seen the writing on the wall when we had no trouble getting a last minute reservation). With almost every course, starting with cocktails, the server brought the wrong thing to my partner... I was lucky and mine was usually correct. At one point a completely different server tried to serve both of us the wrong salads after which there was a very long delay before we received the correct salads. This was actually a pattern for the rest of the evening, we ended up being there over 2 hours! Another couple was seated 30 minutes after us and they were done 10 minutes before us. (They had a different server and didn't seem happy with some of the service miscues either, like getting their dessert while they were still eating their entree.) I would chalk this up to it being a busy night but the place never seemed that busy. As for the food mine was mostly fine though the Chilean Sea Bass was the driest I've ever experienced. Then there was the mess with our wine orders being reversed -- twice! All in all... I won't be back.
Loved it. Great food. Good atmosphere and overall good vibes. Definitely would recommend the crab soup.
Good seafood and atmosphere, the linguine reminded me of Applebee's.
Still a couple of Covid hiccups but the staff was great
Kelly took care of me!!!! What a lovely restaurant and thank God they are doing take out and delivery!!! So clean and the food is soooooooooooo good! What a refreshing and delightful experience!!!!!
If you have another dining option, take the other option.
The food was okay, but the atmosphere, style of menu, etc. would suggest a better quality of food. I was a bit disappointed.
Jess was fantastic, and so were the loaded tots! Best hangover preventer ever.
Jamie Braxton - no relation- Dude is Awesome!!! Been here for all 13 years of my state employment and has a dam good memory. He s All about the experience, and pure enjoyment. Sam Millers has a wonderful ambiance, and it has been said these oysters with a glass of wine can cure any virus *insert pandemic here*.
staff not the best, food was okay.... maybe it's good for the hotel crowd... I could prob send 8o dollars better elsewhere
My family and I came here on vacation. The service was great. I got the Filet Au Poivre which was really good. My family ordered a variety of other things like the Blackened Shrimp Tacos, Surf & Turf Burger, Marinated Skirt Steak, and the Creole Hot Pot. The only edible thing out of those meals was the burger. 3 of my family members tried the tacos, all of which were sick as dogs the next day. 2 of them got the Creole Hot Pot which was $28 worth of tomato soup. Barely had any crab meat and no sausage like the menu states. Wouldn't recommend eating here.
Disappointing! Party of 4. Took 30 minutes to put in order. Another 30 to get food. (yes, 1hr before eating) Filet was DRY, over cooked and cold, fries limp. Date said it was obvious her meal sat under the heat lamp. There were only 3 other couples in the dining room. House Merlot was good! To many other places to go before returning.
A great bar and selection of draft beer and cider. Very nice casual and friendly ambiance. Be sure to try the Oysters Rockefeller and Roasted Brussels Sprouts - delicious!
Staff was very attentive. Crab soup, calamari, stuffed trout, and crab cakes were all excellent. Friday evening dining was not super busy and was relaxed.
Average at best, frequently mess up to go orders, food is of lower quality that you would expect for the price. It's a bar more than a restaurant.
Delicious food, impeccable service and hospitality, along with an awesome atmosphere of downtown rva without a million tables on top of you; such a classy joint! #1 spot for sure and Chef Ryan is a class A guy that truly loves what he does and will bend over backwards for your dining experience!
Very disappointing, service was slow, and there were only 4 tables occupied. Good was over salted and expensive.and no desserts ?
I've been going to Sam Miller's Stock Exchange Cafe' since it was in the Columbian Bldg. across the street. It has always had the good brews on tap and pretty darn good food choices throughout the years. "Cheers" ! Have their signature "Harbor Light"
Great place, great food, wonderful atmosphere! !!
I ordered the Crab Cake it was 17 it is Sam Miller's signature crab cake on a brioche bun with lettuce and house tartar sauce on the side. It wasn t really busy at all but we had to wait like an hour for our food. They forgot the side of tartar sauce. All-in-all not too impressed. The food was okay the service was good other that the wait. I won t be going back or recommending to my friends to go here. The sweet potato fries were really good. That s what is keeping it at a 3 star.
Have tried a burger here - cooked perfectly - crab cake, others. Everything has been delish and prepared perfectly. Waitstaff are okay, not really overly friendly, but usually prompt and willing to answer any questions. Like the Chesapeake chips!
Excellent menu choices well prepared with enough sense of purpose to delight more than just your palate . The service was polite polished and professional at all times.
Loved the crab out so much went back following Sunday brunch. Only open till 3 pm on sunday. Can't wait to go again!
Great place. Convenient and on a cool cobble stone road. Happy hour was good. Cool staff. Caught them on a slow night.
The place is cool to share with friends and have a drink, I did not really like the music I was putting
My peeps! Love the staff & the chef is extraordinary. Parking is easy right out front! Mussels in curry with bread! Ahh for a cold day & Sam Millers! Comfortable booths & ample seating. Go!
Sat at the bar and had great service from Madeleine. Scallops, crab dip, and brussels sprouts were all delicious. Reasonably priced for a nicer downtown spot.
Great fried oysters and creole hot pot. Friendly staff. They spoiled us!
Our bartender Madeline and Chef Lo are the best! The food was 5 stars and our lunch break was very relaxing. We didn't want to go back to work! The happy hour menu is a great deal as well.
Absolutely nice restaurant in downtown Richmond. Especially they serves really fresh seafoods and crab cake is the best which I've ever had before in Richmond~! And the crew was so kind and professional so that she can satisfy us all through the dinner. And steaks what my colleagues had were so nice too. I definitely reommend this place to anyone who come to Richmond, VA sometimes.
Doesn't even deserve 1 star me and 18 coworkers came for dinner. 3 hours later after a few cocktails which took 30 minutes or more between each drink then the appetizers came. About an an hour and a half we got our cold over cooked steak. Dont waste your time or money.
Stopped in on my impromptu trip to Richmond. I feel extremely fortunate to have found Sam Miller s. Jamie was running the oyster bar and was a pleasure to chat with. The oysters were great, the beer selection was solid and the ambiance was very nice. Highly recommend this restaurant.
I know Sam Miller's reputation has taken a hit recently, but we really enjoyed our dinner there for New Year's eve. Appetizers, entrees and desserts we're all very good. My daughter had the pimento cheese appetizer and it was out of this world good. Steaks and salmon were very flavorful and the peppermint Oreo pie was delicious.
Came in for drinks and had a great experience. Lauren was our bartender. She was attentive and delightful. I had a great experience and will definitely come back!
Service was NOT acceptable. Took an hour to get food for a party of two when a party of 6, one of which ordered the same entree as me, received their food first. Never again.
The food quality was quite disappointing and we had to wait a long time after ordering.
Great lunch! Oysters were exquisite and the cocktails were superb. Crab dip was breathtaking good.
Excellent food and service. Always consistently great, highly recommend!
Great Location, Great Food, Good staff. Pricey but worth it
Great food and service....the Crab cakes are a MUST !!
Sat at the bar on Tuesday with my boyfriend and the bartender was amazingly friendly. Please applaud Brian on a job well done.
Nesha & William
Service was good, food was good. Hard to find parking close by
Stopped for lunch while my partner had a meeting down the block. We are traveling with our dog and the staff was wonderful to get us our food and some cool water for him at their adorable sidewalk table. It has not been easy for restaurants lately, but this one was clean and doing it's best with likely a reduced staff. Glad to help support placs esike this.
Staff was so friendly. Food was outstanding. My kids are their mini sliders and my husband and I loved our meals. Delicious food. Very clean and took many Covid precautions. Felt safe.
Come here often on Thursdays where they have an amazing oyster special. Jamie the oyster guy is the best. Very friendly and does a great job with the oysters. Great experience every time. Great oysters. Friendly staff. Lovely crowd. Thanks
Smallish drink spot. Good beer on tap. They have food too, which is fine, but a good place to catch up with someone.
Nice place and comfortable environment. The food is good and reasonably priced. There is a city parking garage across the street. Cold beer and good food = good times.
Average experience. I felt it was overpriced for the quality of food provided. Both my coworker and I were disappointed. I felt there was a limited amount of serving staff, which resulted in a lack of good service. I wouldn t recommend this restaurant, nor would I visit again. I think I would be less irritated, if the prices matched the quality.
Went to Sam Miller s for Valentine s Day with my wife. I chose the restaurant based on their Valentine s Day menu, which had some good selections. We arrived at 6pm and the restaurant was not very full, except for a few patrons at the bar. There was an area off to the left with dining tables, however, we were escorted to the back of the restaurant and seated next to the kitchen and rear exit door. The table was a little wobbly and aside from the low lighting, there really wasn t much in the way of ambiance. There was a two person band doing covers of various songs which was nice, but gave the whole experience a slightly less elegant feel.
Overall I was disappointed with my experience at Sam Miller s. I don t often spend $127 dollars on a meal for two and when I do, I expect to at least be satisfied with my meal. The fact that neither my wife nor myself particularly enjoyed our meal was especially displeasing. The wait staff was pleasant, although not quite as attentive as they could have been, considering the small amount of customer s present at the time. Maybe on a different day with a different selection of menu items, I might have a better experience, but based on my visit, I would not return to Sam Miller s, nor could I recommend it to any of my friends.
Try the crab fondue and the fresh local oysters!!!!
I didn't eat there was just there to see and meet up with some friends. It looked like a nice atmosphere. I might have to eat there one day.
A nice bar restaurant with a menu of good meat and fish. The price is not cheap but adequate to the quality of the dishes. Located in the most characteristic part of Richmond is also great for a quick stop. It is equipped with a wifi that is difficult to operate.
Cozy restaurant with a friendly atmosphere. The service is extremely friendly and the food looks neatly laid out. The taste is good, but the price is on the high side. Enjoyed the view of a beautiful street. In the Richmond Downton area this is one of the better restaurants.
Went here on a school trip today, I ordered a burger and asked for a sweet tea.... I never got my tea... my burger was undercooked. When we asked to have the burger cooked well done they told us they don t do that and gave attitude. Keep in mind we were high schoolers who had to PREPAY for our trip... my table drank our drinks until they were empty, when asked if we could get a refill we were told that they are trying to get dessert to us they will get them soon.... we never got refills, we got nasty undercooked, soggy dessert. I would not recommend my dog to eat here....
We walked in with plans to have dinner. We called beforehand and were told they were open for dinner. When we walked in, everyone in the bar area just stood there and looked at us. It was sort of like being in an episode if Alfred Hitchcock Presents. No one seated us. No one greeted us. They all just stood there and looked at us sort of like they were all retarded., so we left and had a great dinner at another place down the street. Avoid this place at all costs.
My classmates and I were served raw burgers. When asking them if we could get them more cooked, we were told no. Keep in mind that this was pre payed.
Always a good experience. Very good service, food and wine choices!
Thursday happy hour you can t go wrong. Drinks Specials, App Specials & 6 oysters free with the purchase of a drink best deal in town.
The oysters are amazing and fresh. Enjoyed the crab soup so much. Drinks are definitely on point. This place will be a new permanent staple.
I think this place is perfect for lunch downtown. It's quick, tasty and the server was very attentive. We will definitely go back and grab more of the delish sweet potato fries. I had a crab melt and my lunch companion had a burger topped with crab - both were great! Also, its tastes like the actually make the iced tea using tea not the cheap stuff.
She-crab soup is a must have. I go to Sam's as a treat on weekends. Venue is special, historic, and beautiful. Perfect for people watching. Would give it five stars, but parking makes this a place I visit for special occasions only, even though I would like to visit more.
Too expensive for what they serve. Not sure I will return.
Gave this place three chances. We really wanted it to work because its a cool little place in a great location. Bottom line-its cafeteria food at fine dining prices. My striped bass was actually white bass and was about a day from spoiling. My wife ordered the filet med rare...came out Pittsburgh...sent it back...same steak had been put back on the grill and was STILL Pittsburgh rare. Will not be spending any money here again. $160 last night for a terrible meal.
