The campus is quite extensive, and after the construction of a toll road next to Jalan Juanda Margonda, this campus has become one of the access points to go to the UI campus. Enter through the back door and walk through the campus in the middle area to get out on the road near the UI volleyball court.

DISCUSSING the history of the Polytechnic should be alluded to the history of technical education in the past Indonesia. Technical education in Indonesia originated from education in the colonial era consisting of carpentry schools (ambacht school) which produced medium-sized technical school builders, (technische hoge school) who produced prospective field supervisors, and technical high schools (tecnische hoge school) that produced engineer. After the independence period, technical education was carried out in the form of the first technical school (ST), secondary technical school (STM), and technical college. At that time the number of engineers in Indonesia was very small, especially the engineers of the Indonesian nation could be counted on the fingers. To overcome labor shortages in the field, the idea arose to establish a technical education institution that could produce graduates with the ability to approach engineers but the study period was relatively faster. Finally in 1951 was born the Academic Technical Education Institute (LAPT) in Bandung, then changed its name to Academic Engineering Public Works and Power (ATPUT) with a three-year study period.

Since the engineering department is not permitted to hold formal education in stages, since 1972 ATPUT, which was organized in collaboration with PU and ITB, changed its name to the Bandung Institute of Technology Public Works Polytechnic Institute (LPPU-ITB). Thus the LPPU-ITB is the first educational institution that uses the name Polytechnic, this LPPU only accepts PU employees as students as stated by Ir. Tonny Soewandito, who is often referred to as a polytechnic founder in Indonesia.

The Polytechnic as an educational institution was first included in the education repertoire in Indonesia through the Technical Cooperation Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Republic of the Swiss Confederation on December 16, 1973 under the name of the Mechanical Polytechnic of the Bandung Institute of Technology. The purpose of establishing this Polytechnic is to support industrial development in Indonesia through technical education. The education program emphasizes practical application on industrial / technologists especially in the field of precition mechanics for manufacturing tools, maintenance / repair of production machines, and machining design drawings. The education program lasts for three years and is tiered. The first two for the primary level and the next one are according to specialization to produce skilled expert technicians. The program graduates of the first two years (basic level) get a certificate and the third year program (specialization) graduates get a diploma that is recognized by the state. His education program in January 1976 and named Swiss ITB Mechanical Polytechnic, endorsing the education of the Swiss ITB Mechanical Polytechnic was carried out by the Minister of Education and Culture Decree. No. 0416 / U / 1981 dated 11 December 1981, retroactively commencing from 11 October 1975.

For the success of the implementation of the education program and the operationalization of the Swiss-ITB Mechanical Polytechnic and its suitability with the references and objectives to be achieved to educate skilled skilled technicians for industrial development in Indonesia, six new Polytechnics and one Polytechnic Education Development Center in Bandung were built in December 1978 called the Polytechnic Project I. And then continued with the Polytechnic Project II on June 22, 1983.
