BEEN COMEING HERE TO SEE MY FRIENDS AND STAFF FOR 22 YRS AND WAS HERE ON DAY IT STARRED UP TIMES WILL CHERISH AS LONG AS I LIVE....FAMILY HAS BEEN AT THE PLANT FOR 23 YEARS AND THE PLANT IS AS SAFE AS THE PERSONNEL AND VERY WELL TRAINED WAS THEIR A FRW WEEKS AGO NO CHANGES.WHAT IS THE PUBLIC GOING TO DO IF CALIFORNIA RUNS EXSTREAMLY LOW AT SHASTA/WISHON/FOLSOM AND PARIMID LAKE BETWEEN BAKERSFIELD AND LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA. ....
Got to tour the plant before it went online. My Scoutmaster worked for Bechtel as a designer and engineer. I can safely state that Diablo Canyon is one of the safest in the WORLD. No matter what non-scientific uneducated nay sayers "opinions".
Clean power, no emissions, but it's evil because I don't understand science.
I wrote a mediocre review but it turned into a glowing one!
Cheapest source of electricity in California - and it's safe and clean. Too bad it is being shut down prematurely. That means more fossil fuels will be burned to replace it.
This place was awesome. The water glowed green with flavor and I got 3 extra fingers and half a leg for some reason. The air smelt of burnt muskrats and 3 month old worcestershire
sauce. Also my legs got melted off after I went for a swim. Thanks to corridor crew for recommending me this place.
Nuclear power is very safe. Just ask the Ukrainians or Japanese. Besides, nobody would ever cut corners, skip established safety procedures, falsify records or risk the health of others to save a few dollars. Never. Earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes... Meh. They won't catch us by surprise.
Lols to all the people rating it one star bc they are to ignorant to understand anything about nuclear power.
Is Nuclear Power still cool? Where does all the waste go? For how long? Like a body without an anus isn't it?
PG&E could be ahead of the curve and use this huge piece of land for new technologies. They could keep the employees too. It is going to cost a lot to get the cooling towers the NRC and CPC are requiring to relicense the plant.
Great atmosphere, couldn't get the taste of metal out of my mouth though =\
Fantastic views and they have the largest lobsters I've ever seen. It must be something in the water.
The plant is a danger to sea life and local residents
This single power plant provides the baseload for all of California. Very impressive! It's located at such a place that its can't be seen in the surrounding areas.
When natural energy gas, oil, coal. runs out and it will... and solar, thermal, wind and water is insufficient to supply it all and it will not be... you all will be crying for gov to get them plants built. And if they were built much sooner, all the natural resources would last longer. Nuclear is the end game.... and the hydrogen nuts... it takes power to Crack Water.. and the cost per unit at today's rate... = $6.00 a gallon... 30 years.. I'll do it for you at $50.00 a gallon... the basic problem with people that don't understand... it's too technical. And the right way is gov... get them built now and make then safe... as safe as the Navy fleet... not some make it cheaper... the most expensive and safest plants ... energy costs 1/3 of today's rates. Getting rid of the waste is very safe and simple... but that's for another time... any nay sayers .... why are you allowing the Navy to build nuclear carriers? And one carrier could light up the city of NY three times over...
. done deal...
.
One of the most awesome and safe nuclear power plants out there! Love this place, 10/10 would use to fight climate change.
My Grandmother and Grandfather lived near this nuclear power plant, in Los Osos, for decades, both died of cancer.
A sharp increase in the rate of cancer (within 15 miles of the plant) occurred following the commissioning of this plant.
Clean energy.
10/10 recommend the "diablo burger. Though ask for onion rings instead of fries, my daughter grew an eleventh toe because of the fries. My husband and I left my kids to go into the spa and we came out fused together, best version of couples therapy ever! We've never felt closer! The only reason I gave it a four out of five is because the waiter forgot the extra nuclear BBQ sauce I requested on my "diablo burger".
Beautiful drive and twice the gamma rays for my deep dark tan! Science rules!
Best clean energy being produced anywhere. Better hope s big tsunami doesn't wipe it out like Fukushima...
The only thing that gets you with nuclear power is the waste. We have been hauling it all to large holes in the ground around the US. But those holes will eventually fill...something has to be done with the waste. It takes decades for it to "COOL" It will eventually become inert. But none of us will be around then. So...what options do you have other than nuclear power???? Well...Hydro Electric IS the grand father of all mass power production answer. But....again the logistics are HUGE!!!! The maintenance is extremely costly. It takes VERY HEAVY INDUSTRY to build and maintain a HYDRO ELECTRIC facility. The relative cost to output of a Nuclear Power Plant is the very best option. Wind power is like HYDRO ELECTRIC in huge demands on heavy industry and continous maintenance cost...this is not practical there is no return on the power....unless you want to pay 10x the amount in your bill to afford it. Nukes are BEST by far that is why every nation on earth is moving toward a full on Nuke bonanza!!!! It is the cheapest long term power answer that exists today.
California's largest power plant by far. Annually produces five times the typical production of Hoover Dam. Very cost effective at 2.71 cents/kwh in 2015. 24/7 reliability and availability in comparison with solar and wind. No carbon emissions during power generation - note the lack of smokestacks in the photo. The local nonprofit, Californians for Green Nuclear Power, Inc. (CGNP) has been opposing PG&E's plan to abandon DCPP as a compensation-eligible CPUC Intervenor as NOT in the Public Interest. See our website at CGNP dot org for details. Please ignore the obnoxious anti-nuclear power postings from some of the posters here who hide behind phony names..
Don,
Your confusion about the events at the Daichi nuclear facility in Fukushima is not unlike many others. Firstly, the quake happened on one fault and not many. Next, none of the reactors at Fukushima suffered a "full meltdown" as you mention but they were stressed and overheated because of the coolant failure. A meltdown is when the fission material actually melts. Think of it as the difference between an overheated car engine and one that has actually melted.
In fact, no one has died from the incident and injuries were the result of improperly used protective gear.
never worked there but it's a great power plant and its my dream job
it's too bad they are closing it in 5 years. vote biden harris and it can go on for another 10 if not more years. I always would like to go there and do not regret the 5 minutes it took to type this review. 5 solid stars, no regret and a clean source of power.
If the any of you work at the plant you have a good job and you rock! Never quit. you are awesome. keep being awesome!
Nuclear energy is clean, safe, renewable and reliable.
Did you know that eating a banana will expose you to more radiation than living within 5km of the average nuclear power plant for an entire year.
This is due to radioactive isotopes of potassium that exist in almost all potassium in very small quantities. This potassium is incorporated into the banana.
Of course, both of these pale in comparison to background radiation (mostly from uranium ore under the ground).
Radiation is notoriously hilariously over reacted to (made less funny by the denunciation of nuclear power as a result). If you ate uranium, the heavy metal (think lead) poisoning would kill you before alpha-radiation did, and alpha radiation is the most dangerous by orders of magnitude when it can actually affect your cells (which wont happen through your skin, can only happen when you ingest an alpha emitter).
The only type of radiation that can pass through an obstruction the thickness of a piece of paper is gamma radiation, which is extremely - and I mean EXTREMELY - non-ionising (therefore unlikely to cause cancer). They have dense barriers around most reactors to try to absorb gamma radiation, however it can pass through these without interacting with these. On the same token it is far more likely to pass through your body with no impact.
And that's FUEL GRADE uranium, nuclear waste is waste because it is so nonradioactive as to be unusable in a reactor.
Good service and excellent food, stayed for coffee and didn't regret it.
10/10
Diablo Canyon was built in the late 1970s and went into service in the early 1980s. Johnny Lawless may have been thinking of the Tomales Bay site which PG&E had planned in the late 60s. That was rejected and the AVila Beach site chosen.
Some of the best ocean front property. Spectacular views of the ocean and wildlife.
I used to live nearby, and to make us feel safe the Lovely people that run the plant used to give us free Potassium Iodide tablets, and an evacuation siren test once a year.
I'm not sure if that made me feel safer, or just worried me further. Either way, I'm glad I don't live near "Devil's Canyon" any longer. :-O
Gotta Agree w/ Jimmy J...
...Homer's O-Rings are Tight!
Treat yourself to this eclectic off-grid establishment staffed by the fine women in (light) blue.
Go Off-Menu with a "Dutch-Monkey" Burger...
Kick-Up the Power by going Diablo-Style!
Burgers are delicious. Be sure to get the onion rings....amazing. Unique decor and lively environment. Looking forward to the next time I'm around.
Provides lots of electricity and doesn't output any carbon dioxide!
Good service and food. The only problem with my meal was the faint smell of nuclear waste. I asked the waiter, he said they kept it in the fridge for now and they were trying to find a better place. Other than that, great place, would recommend.
Finally GREEN Means More Means Saves Money and Make More Money
Neat place. And the cafeteria has microwave ovens that dont even need to be plugged in to work!
What an awesome place to work. Only the best people in society are allowed to pass through these gates. Gorgeous private 6 mile coastline drive. The California people here are so acomidating. Everyone that works here is treated with respect. An icon in the Nuclear world. Terrible shame and big mistake to shut the units down as they have the best operating status in the industry. Good cafe too.
Excellent. The grass-fed beef burgers stay warm forever.
The keylime pie is to die for, but really, the pecan pie at Comanche Peak is better.
Hands-down without a doubt the safest and most naturally-protected nuclear power plant in the United States. The elevation differences do not compare to Fukushima.
To the gentleman who posted about Western U.S. thyroid cancer rates rising because of the Fukushima accident, you are grossly informed. Likely by one of the anti-nuclear advocates that like to make everyone think that we are on the verge of imminent danger; all claims cited by their "expert" testimony that seems to never be referenced in academia or any scientific journal worth merit. It's usually someone who lacks a scientific education yet miraculously can publish their own cancer study.
Visited for Family and Friends day last month and loved this place and what they are doing.
great selection of radioactive cancer would recommend swimming in the pools, they keep it nice and cool.
Japan learned the hard way: You just can't trust'em!
If any country has incentive and intelligence to know about both the nuclear energy and earthquakes it is Japan.
They just didn't want to think about a 8.9 quake much less with a tsunami. Way to expensive for the owners!
Now the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Generating Station has
a whole series of earthquake faults nearby. This is the same condition as was true for the Big One in Japan recently. This system of many faults was recognized
before the destroying quake but they were not connected so thought to be of little significance.
Problem was they became connected when triggered. Releasing their energy pretty much in unison.
And a full meltdown of the nuclear plant resulted.
We know the result: Americans in Japan were advised
to leave within a 50 mile radius from the damaged nuclear plant. This advice was to avoid a "significant risk to U.S. citizens."
Whose within 50 miles of Diablo Canyon nuclear generating station?
The plant has no cooling towers. Every other plant is required to have them -- why doesn't this one? It's full of design flaws as well, including reinforcement plans that were not reversed when applied to the second cooling tower which was the reverse of its opposite. It's a hazard to the public and the environment and should be decommissioned. Let's use the 990 acres that PG&E owns to install solar fields instead.
The tour guide informed me that its pronounced "new CAH LEER" and then showed us some sick skateboard tricks in one of the reactor pools that they converted to a skate park. Over all, he seemed like a cool guy, but I can't get the song that he sung out of my head. If you know the song please respond to this.
Worked at the plant for 30 years and safety was alway put first. Smart dedicated people work here and they plant should continue to run until we have solar storage or better way to produce reliable power.
This is an extremely dangerous, decrepit and run-down nuclear power facility. PG&E has run this place into the ground (no pun intended) just like they have their Northern California s dated power lines and equipment, which have caused the deadly fire storms over the 4 years. If this nuclear power facility is not shut down permanently, and safety, we here in California are in real trouble if any earthquake is to happen near this facility. For any further information on PG&E s dangerous and deleterious lack of maintenance on Diablo Power Plant, just google their history of negligence.
Diablo Canyon One why can t you be more like Diablo Canyon Two?
Has any of you that says nuclear power is unsafe and will trigger accidents actually did some legitimate research? A nuclear power plant accident happens in a 1 in a hundred thousand chance, and it ONLY happens if somebody was being irresponsible and didn't follow the guidelines that makes the facility safe, or natural disasters. Since the facility was made to withstand earthquakes (any sensible person would be prepared for earthquakes near the fault lines), the chance of natural disaster causing a nuclear accident is pretty low. Now go research the rest before you come back here and start talking smack.
