Was pretty good. Servers were nice, but it was slightly on the pricey side for the size of dishes served. Also, we were told we couldn't have a table without a reservation, but there were so many empty tables. Not sure what was up with that.

Poor Service, music too loud, poor acoustics so the place is just very noisy even when the music isn't playing. fantastic food. This place would have gotten one-star had the food not been superb. The waiter was so inattentive that I gave him a much lower tip than I usually get give... something I rarely do

NYC Favorite. The food is fantastic. My favorite Spanish tapas restaurant in NYC. I have been many times and the food is always top rated. This is a popular place but the noise level stays in check. I recommend to anyone visiting NYC.

- Datiles - 5 pieces of small, sweet and candied dates with an almond and crunchy bacon
- Abobdigas meatballs - very soft and tender, with nice tomato sauce
- Paella de mariscos - moist and tomatoey - contained large shrimp with shell, small shrimp, clams and mussels, on the salty side

One of the worst restaurant experiences of my life...

One of the worst restaurant experiences of my life. The host in charge two Friday nights ago did not demonstrate good customer service from the beginning.
I ordered the croquettes with ham. I took one bite and couldn t taste the ham. I asked a worker if I received a wrong order and he said they make large batches, so sometimes some of them don t have the ham?? He pointed out a speck of ham in another one of the croquettes. He told me I could return it and that s what I did. I ordered a red sangria, which was watered down. When I mentioned it to the waiter she just said oh sometimes it comes like that because its made in large quantities.

After I sat down and waited a while I had to remind the waiter to get me the menu, and ask for the bread for the table. I didn t complain about that, I let it go. When it was time to order I knew what I wanted to order because I checked the menu before arriving from yelp on grub hub which said paella for 2 $24. I glanced at the menu to double check this is what I wanted and placed my order. The waiter said this plate is meant for two and it s very large. I told her its fine I ll just save the leftovers for next day. She did not mention anything specific about the price.

When the paella arrived it didn t seem that large for 2 people to share. Upon taking two bites I noticed it was very salty. I was so hungry and I waited so long for this dish I didn t mention it and just ate 3/4 of it. I also noticed the paella was a bit dry and stuck/burnt a bit to the bottom of the plate.

When it was time to pay I reviewed my receipt and it stated $48 for the paella. I was shocked. I figured it was definitely a mistake since the menu did not say the paella is $48. I told the waiter and she immediately protested that she had clearly explained that 1 order of paella is 24 and 2 orders must be made, which she did not. She said the menu clearly explains this. I reasoned why would the menu say paella is 24 if you cannot order one serving. She said oh that s if people want to place more than two orders, but it s an odd number?? This is the most ridiculous explanation. I was polite and tried to reason with her but she did nothing to help. The waiter just left me there. She did not say lets see what I can do or let me get the manager to work out something to reach a compromise. Most restaurants want to try to make sure the customer leaves feeling heard and well taken care of. I waited for a manager to come to sort it out and negotiate something because I was misled by the wording of the menu and the waiter was not explicit about the price.

After waiting awhile I was surprised no one came to resolve this and I needed to leave. The host had walked by the table several times and did not look at me or say anything. I left cash on the table covering what I ordered, including, tax and tip minus the $24 which I felt I should not have been charged since the menu and waiter were not explicit about the price and left. Seconds after exiting the manager chased me down telling me I needed to pay the rest of the fee for the paella. He did not let me explain and said his waiter was very clear about the price, and the menu is very clear (Sure it was). And threw in my face the he "took care of me" because he didn t charge me for the croquettes that I did not eat? This is customary at a restaurant. If the food does not meet your level of satisfaction you are allowed to send it back. He acted as if he did me a favor.

He then made comments that gave me the impression he held a particular bias against me and was making assumptions about me, which could have been racist since I am a minority. Comments like "I knew what was going on, we were watching you, do you always leave restaurants without paying the bill?" He threatened to call the police. I made the decision to pay the full bill, left no tip and will never eat here again.

To top it off not only was the paella not good, but I got sick within 20 minutes of leaving and went to the bathroom 3 times that same evening.
Save your money & go to another restaurant.

The seafood paella dish is tasty and is $19 per person. You are better off getting a main dish rather than spending money on individual tapas that range from $8 to $14. The plate is served in an individual cast iron skillet, paired with a good glass of wine or pitcher of sangria, and you are all set for the night. If you are looking for good ambiance and have a large group of friends, this is the spot for you.

Excellent classic Spanish food served by attentive, caring staff in an attractive, cozy , though quite noisy space. The meat paella is not to be missed - croquettes are wonderful. A small but well chozen wine list complements the food perfectly.

We called Sat. lunch time asking about reservation...

We called Sat. lunch time asking about reservations for that evening after 5pm; they said earliest opening was 9:30 but we could walk in. We arrived at 4:45 and only 3 tables occupied with 2 people at the bar. We told the host we had no reservations and we were seated at the high tables across from the bar instead of a normal table. We ate dinner (paella, $48, tasted great but portion was not enough for 2) and left by 6. Only 5-6 tables occupied but bar was full (where were all the reservations they told us about on the phone??). I think they put all people w/o reservations at the bar area regardless of how empty the rest of the place is. It was a bit annoying because our table was so small it could barely fit all the plates, glasses, utensils.

Maybe we caught them on an off day, but we were totally underwhelmed for a place that charged so much. The paella was very dry and the seafood didn t taste fresh, and for $40 a pitcher, the sangria was extremely disappointing.
Two stars only because the croquetas and chorizos fritos were delicious, not to mention, the lovely ambiance.

Spanish tapas do not leave in good place. We have sold acorn-legged ham, and that pig has not seen the acorns. A plate of normal ham with a few pieces of super thin cheese has charged us a kidney.
For those who are not Spanish, it may happen, but those who have tried a good ham ...

My wife and I found this restaurant several years ago on one of our sightseeing walks in Manhattan. The food is excellent and authentic, and atmosphere is lively and energetic, yet romantic enough for a couple on a date. We now go to Sala everytime we visit NYC.

Stopped in for a drink at the bar. Bartender was incredibly offensive, condescending, and strangely bossy. She spoke down to me as if I was mentally incompetent and never had a glass of wine before. I've lived many years in SF and Napa/Sonoma Valley, understand plenty about wine, and never encountered such a rude bartender-- NYC or elsewhere. Unacceptable behavior and attitude.

Was invited to sala one nine for a friends bday dinner and decided to go only because she kept Raving about how amazing this intimate tapas restaurant is. Disclaimer: I take birthday dinners very seriously. Running 15 minutes late, I finally arrive and walked through a long red velvet curtain. Voila, people - all over! I mean this is great for business, I just didn't expect such a vibrant crowd for an intimate location. It's a two part restaurant- the entrance seats a handful of people- a few seating tables and one of 2 bars. I already knew where my party was and took a deep breath of relief when I realized this place is not small at all! Maybe they prefer it this way to surprise you. After all you don't expect romance right away. Although minimal lighting surrounds the entire restaurant this section is much larger. Rustic wooden walls and floors make you feel warm and cozy not to mention their sexy lanterns decor their ceilings. It wasn't long before I met my party, especially after noticing all the wine glasses and food platters floating left and right. The minute I sat down the waiter introduced himself and poured me a glass of wine- attentiveness at its best! We ordered a combination of their rations and entrees so we could all have a little bit of everything. I was introduced to their almond stuffed date surrounded by sweet glazed bacon. I wanted more! If you're craving seafood, Gambas Al Ajillo brings seared shrimps swimming in pure deliciousness garlic oil. Ask for as much bread as you'd like because this is one sizzling oil you're going to keep dipping in. If you like to spice up your dishes make sure you order their spicy red pepper sauce , is a warm spicy tomato sauce that is also found in their Patatas Bravas, if you like potatoes you'll love this side. Who wouldn't want drenched potatoes in a yummy sauce. The truth is Sala one nine will be seeing more and more of me. See you soon!

Highly recommended. This is a wonderful Spanish tapas restaurant with a balance of bar dining and table service. There's actually two decent sized bars (front and back) plus high top tables and standard seating. The food was fresh but also came out quickly, and all the dishes were excellent. Best of all, the staff were knowledgeable and friendly. We'll be returning.

Sala serves small and tasty dishes, sort of like tapas. The dishes are creative and tasty. Both meat and vegetarian choices are enjoyable. Service is fast and friendly. Prices are fair. The only downside is that the room is a little noisy. Recommended. Come regularly or come for.an occasional change of pace. Make an advance reservation.

$$$ Great ambiance. Little high on the price. Food and drinks were great.
Try their cocktails. The sangria was ok for that price.
Friendly staff. For whatever reason the place is very noisy, as in the customer s noise was a lot compared to many similar restaurants.

Perfect spot in flatiron for some cava/wine with delightful tapas.

Fried goat cheese, Serrano ham croquettes, pan con tomate, empanadas are light and flaky, gambas al ajillo, calamari, and octopus are our favorites.

If really hungry we had the paella once and enjoyed it, but normally don t order it.

My friend and I went to happy hour on two different days. We had delicious croquettes, garlic shrimp and fresh bread, but the sangria (both red and white) were seriously lacking. They tasted like iced wine with random fruit bits tossed it. Since they were only $5 each, I suppose we got what we paid for, but I'd expect a Spanish restaurant to do better.

We really enjoyed this spot. The servers were friendly and super attentive, and the food was excellent. The dishes were simply yet delicately prepared classic small Spanish dishes. We had the fried cod, Spanish Ratatouille, patatas bravas, pan con tomate, and artichokes. All were delicious and very fresh. We really enjoyed the cod. I definitely recommend Sala over Boqueria, which is nearby.
