One of the good zoo in bay area. A good number of animals and have decent space for them. I wish the zoo should put some innovative thoughts to do some new shows. Gandola ride is a very good experience.

The gondola was fantastic, free and never seemed to be more than a couple minutes wait in line. Restaurant at the top had great food but be prepared for those park prices and the line moved pretty slow. I think they are still working on how to keep the lines moving. $12 sandwiches, burgers and pizzas. Bring your own beverages to the park. 9 bucks for a soda. Animals were all visible and park was very clean. Restrooms were very accessible and clean. Parking looks a little heavy when you show up but don't be discouraged, there is lots of room in the park.
Small zoo, great for young children and their parents and grandparents. Gondola ride is fun. Our daughter uses her membership often and can take guests.
I LOVE the new lift to the other zoo area. There is an amazing kids play area and a restaurant with good food (overpriced as expected) and a beautiful view. A tip if you eat there- ask for a cup for water instead of waisting $6 on bottled water.
Definitely plan to arrive at opening time. You will get to see the animals being fed and checked out by their caretakers. Also, plan to stay the whole day because there is so much to see!
A really awesome experience. A wide variety of animals. First zoo we've been to since moving to cali. This beat our expectations of a park. They have a bunch of rides toddlers can go on. I was surprised my 2 year old son was able to go on a few. This place was really worth it.
The ticket is too expensive .. If you have a lot of children you pay quite a bit .. they don't have anything for coupons .. And the zoo is pretty spoiled .. it doesn't have anything anymore .. they should invest more in the zoo for the price one pays we deserve plus..
Huge attractive layout. Disappointed not all of the animals were available. Cafe was affordable. The holiday lights were cute although I think it shouldve been with regular admission instead of an additional $10.
My 3 year old LOVES the oakland. The only thing is that it does have lots of hills so wear comfy shoes and definitely take a stroller. It has a nice nature/foresty vibe. Also, trybto eat lunch else wear because the cafe food is expensive. We paid almost $100 for 2 kids meals and 4 burgers.
Such an amazing experience. The animals are well cared for, which is nice to see. The animals are varied and interesting, with good sized, appropriate habitats. Otters, alligator, bats, African animals, and even jaguars and bears. They have this gondola to take visitors to the "California" expanse. Staff is helpful and friendly. Restrooms are well spaced, common and easily accessible. Ramps for wheelchair or stroller access along the exhibits. You will enjoy!
This was my first time at the Oakland zoo, came on memorial weekend not to crowded love the place friendly staff. Definitely bring your kids if you are in the Oakland area.
Very big zoo with lots of animals. Gondola ride was very fun, once you go up the hill the animals there like wolfs are hard to find or see as live a big area. We liked the gift shop, it has lot of stuffed wild animals.
Loved talking with the docents that were so available to talk with and Harry made the elephant exhibit so interesting I would come again for his knowledge and stories. Thanks so much
A great days out visit location. The animals are very well cared for with lots of open space to roam. Not the typical cages pens. You need a good 4-5 hours here to enjoy all the sights, and get educated on all the animals there.
Many species of animals , lions, tigers, bears , river otters, alligators, hyenas, etc. I give four stars because of alligator spot is in children zoo and the fence around it is too low so easy to alligators climb it. In my opinion It s unsafe.
LOVED IT!! First time going to the Oakland Zoo. Kids had a blast seeing the animals & going on the rides. The main restaurant by the entrance was rather SLOW!! I waited 45 mins to 1 hour for our food. (unacceptable). Simple food like hot dogs, grilled cheese, nacho's took for ever!! All in all it was an amazing quality time family day!!
This is THE best zoo in the Bay Area. Huge complex with lots of room for animals to roam - it shows in how the animals just seem more active than at the SF zoo. If you ve got small kids they ll be delighted by the adjacent mini-carnivalesque park with a smattering of kid rides, train and mini roller coaster. Great place to spend time as a family, would probably be a fantastic location for a kid s birthday party.
Everyone was friendly. The majority of the animals were out to see. My neice had the key to the special box to share more information on each animals. There was probably on3 boxes that did not work. Had a great day at Oakland Zoo!
As far as zoos go, the Oakland Zoo is a gem. Great for kids, a variety of animals including big ones like elephants, tigers, and bears, and beautiful views of the Bay Area from the top of the gondola.
Possibly the best zoo in Northern California and certainly a favorite family destination. One downside is that it is a bit hilly at times, rather steep too, which is challenging if you have strollers. Get the family membership to save money.
Very well maintained park, bad food. Get your own food and water bottle. Plenty of spaces to sit and eat while watching the lazy and bored lions yawn at you.
Maybe I am a bit spoiled with European zoos, but I would like to have a bit more shadow for visitors and animals. The other issue which forces me to provide only 4star - getting to Australia part of zoo requires a separate payment. Getting there by train is fun, but a separate payment?!
What an amazing and underrated and understated Zoo! And quite honestly we're talking a 2 to 3 hour difference in commute round trip to go here versus to go to the San Francisco Zoo from Sacramento
