North Side Housing and Supportive Services Review

This place had me in an apartment that sold to another company who was renovating it into high price condos and gave all tenants option to break lease due to noise and filth of said renovation. They refused to move me and I spent all winter hearing jackhammers that were beyond loud all day, the heat and hot water being shut off regularly ALL WINTER, filth everywhere, and sink backing up with who knows what. I complained to Northside Housing constantly but they refused to move me until I got the alderman and HUD involved. Then 3 years later they conned me into taking a CHA voucher with the promise I could transfer from my studio to a 1 bedroom apartment in the same complex that I enjoyed living in, or get any other 1 bedroom apt in Chicago that was in a certain price range. I was lied to. I couldn't find 1 landlord in a similar area to rent to me, including the promised 1 bedroom in aforementioned complex. I'm considering filing a breech of contract suit against them. They are supposed to help clients become independent, but that's nonsense, they also paid my rent and electric late often. I recently got my own apartment and have to pay a deposit with Comm Ed because of them paying late. Quite pathetic in my opinion! IF THEY WOULD JUST CONTACT ME AND OFFER A BIT OF COMPENSATION FOR THE CHA FIASCO, I'D REMOVE THESE REVIEWS AND LET BY GONES BE BY GONES!

Needs improvement. I have had three case managers in the last 10 months. I have to reapply for services due to the last person inept experience.

I'm on the Board of Directors of this agency and know from a long and wide ranging experience with them that this is a top notch agency working to end homelessness in Chicago.

I have a question I have a garbage bag full of mis matched women s socks in v good condition, I also have about 6 pairs of jeans size 2-4. Can I drop this off at this shelter? Will it be useful for anyone?

I am currently homeless and need a stable place to sleep at night vs bus terminal.

This place is a " God Send " ! They started admistering a Hud-Vash program 5-yrs, ago . The pilot program was initiated and called "House First" . In Conjunction with Homeless Veteran's (In my case I am Dually-Diagnosed) , at first on a 2-year Basis .

It has proven relatively successfull , the theory is , if a person is housed he :

1 Is more able to Stabilize his life Socially , Employment , Education , Family , Health ( Physical & Mental) and Treatment (when needed)

2 When living in a safe environment in clean affordable housing , that is a Nexus for other extenuating circumstances getting resolved

3 So for me , I grew my Support Base , by Volunteering at first

4 Becoming a Community Leader - Volunteer Weiss Memorial Hospital , Volunteer Voter Registrar , Chair - Meetings for State Funding For Housing , Public Speaker , Mentor / Sponsor and rounding off as a Board Of Director of an HIV-AIDS Advocacy

In summary for me , I've been able to flourish . As the cause and effect of my Association with NorthSideHousing and The Housing First Initiative .

Very helpful if you're living in shelter or on the street.

Called 2 days ago with no response. Can t leave a message because mailbox is full. So annoying and unprofessional.

They have hearts of gold they really care for the less fortunate

This place is not very helpful. There are a couple good people, but generally they close without notice and just don't seem to do much good. It's also not easy to get through to someone on the phone, but that's pretty typical for these places. They never helped me find any housing. My case manager left this place, and it's been downhill since then.

I brought good donations not too long ago, and they basically turned their noses up at them because they were closing within an hour. The older lady with the grey wig was downright hostile.

I didnt meet their criteria. Need one whole year of documented homelessness to qualify. Otherwise they were attentive and friendly.
