The second month after my move back here from Arkansas, I got pulled over for supposedly speeding, 60 in a 50 near the OU campus. The officer was nice to me, understanding my anxiety, but still wrote me a ticket. I was alright with it, as I figured if it was paid, no big deal. BUT... Then I saw they were pulling literally EVERYONE over that they could catch. Random cars left and right (I think I remember a nice Camaro among the mix.) What made it worse? Cop on a motorized bicycle (or as they call it "motorcycle"), standing there watching it all. I was tempted to take pictures and record everything and report it, but not like it would have done anything, given how corrupt our government already is (thanks, Al Gore!). The ticket was later paid and the worry was gone... or so I thought. I got another ticket from Moore, but the officers in that area were merely just looking for someone to harass, and guess what? I was the lucky winner of that prize, but that's a story for another day and another cup of coffee. Then the second ticket from Norman (3rd total since I've been here) was a major rub-salt-in-the-wound moment. You ready for this one? Yeah? Alright, here it is: I was cited for doing 48 in a 35 on my way back from a job interview, but every car around me was doing the exact same speed, which led me to believe they were looking to make a profit off of me, let alone profile me for having an out-of-state tag and a modified Astra (amazing how the imports draw so much attention, amirite or amirite?) Looks like I'm succeeding there, at least. Furthermore, both times I was cited?First one, I was doing 55. Second one was 40. So here's my dilemma: I'm sitting here scrambling to find a job so I can put money in YOUR pockets because I can't afford an entire court case. Maybe instead of citing innocent citizens for crimes they didn't commit, try a more constructive and constitutional approach. In today's world innocent people are scattering like cockroaches in a high school cafeteria, or shaking like a chihuahua at the sight of a single police cruiser. The widespread paranoia is unbelievable. At this point I've been convinced that even our protectors cannot be trusted. So one star for the cop who was nice to me, but as for the others, I stand firm on my beliefs that our world is a metaphorical hurricane. It was exciting at first, but ultimately, it's bound to end in disaster.
Fight happening behind me, distinctive gunshots, vehicle peels out SQUEALING. Called 911--SHE WANTS TO KNOW WHAT THE VEHICLE LOOKED LIKE! Apparently they can't do anything unless I can tell them what the vehicle looked like, what the people looked like, exactly what the address was...Ever so sorry dear, but I have advanced degrees and a successful career, I don't go running out to an argument with gunfire so that I can stick myself in the middle of the situation. Guess the police department has become too lazy to investigate anything without private citizens who aren't getting paid for the privilege putting themselves in danger?!
I've lived in Norman for a 7 years now, I've been stopped a couple times while driving, the officers have always been professional and up standing.
One police officer working lol I have a break in called it in it's been more than a hour since I called now this woman telling me the officer assigned to me had a emergency call fine but she telling me not to touch anything it's almost 2 in the morning seriously
The non emergency line is consistently awful lately. No help at all. Not listening. The 911 cops are mostly good with a few bad apples.
That officer who dressed down the other cop who was unnecessarily beating the man and slamming his head into the pavement should run for chief there. We need more officers like him. Give this officer a medal
Thank you for your service... I never caught his name.
Your police officer are police officers not medical doctors or trained medical examiners to make the proper determination on Wether a person needs medical attention or not, to the chief of police your officers need more training and need to be reminded of what their duties actually are, the way they handled Mr. Kessee was unprofessional very disappointing to watch
Just had a tiny incident of minor vandalism by some drive-by teens. Called the non-emergency line, they sent out a young officer who arrived within ten minutes of me making the call. Pretty impressive given what a low priority incident it was.
Starting to make me lose hope in humanity. We all face our days knowing that it may be our last, tis life. When it's obvious to see that the officer (Brian Browning) is just working to meet a paycheck and not actually express genuine concern about my confidential discovery or my safety, it literally made me nauseated. Just because this beautiful city, that I was born in, has a phenomenally low crime rate, doesn't mean we should just hire anyone off the streets that can meet standard credentials, but that are also passionate and yearn to SERVE and PROTECT Norman and it's people.
-Amen.
so i am getting on the interstate and hiding behind a bridge is norman police unit with his hand held radar gun ! i pull over i know i was speeding but thats not the issue officer Ridner comes up to my window sticks his radar gun in my face and tells me to look i got you at 80 mph ! Ok you got me! but his unprofessional rude behavior is the issues this is why cops have the bad rap because of officer Ridner attitude ! Mr police chief i think Mr Ridner needs some more training on the way he treats others we are all not criminals yes i was speeding you didn't have to treat me like i had commented a serious crime ! my step son is a okc police officer i know he dosn,t treat others like you do but he is busy fighting real crime not a traffic cop
They are SUPER nice and really helpful as well made sure i knew what i was doing and felt like they really cared!
Great friendly staff, but absolutely horrible parking and hard to get in and out of the parking lot.
I had an occasion to call the police to report a stolen TV and was very happy to see a response within 5 minutes-- two officers arrived at my home and spent several minutes going through the house to be sure the intruders were gone and then proceeded to take fingerprints and get a thorough report of what happened. The officers were extremely professional as they made sure I was safe and answered all of my questions before leaving. When I called back the next day to provide additional information the gentleman on the phone was extremely helpful and polite. I don't expect to see the TV again, but I am very happy with the response and service I received from the NPD.
My dealings with Norman Police have always been positive. Keep up the good work!
Officer Rogers is awesome! Compassionate and kind! A Good Cop!
Called about a vandalism on alameda. The dispatch was very professional. And not one but two officers showed up within five minutes
Another great job at emerald greens, n.p.d. (second to none) semper paratus, always ready.
Let me say I have meet some kind officers here in Norman but there response time needs to be better and they need to take the job more serous. I went to go get a copy of a police report I filed and they never filed it and when I keep bugging them they just sent it to small claims court. I don't know how I am going to get money out of a homeless person and how I can fix the problem without a police report to give to the insurance company. Guess its time to sell cause I am SOL.
Now nobody's perfect and I understand they have some problems but when I called today about two men obviously casing my store for a robbery they handled it marvelously. After describing the incident they put two cars on standby and gave me a direct line to their dispatch in case if they came back at any time. I thank Officer Garnand for his genuine concern and giving me all the resources necessary to keep my employees and myself safe.
My experience with The Norman Police Department has been nothing but positive. They abide by the law and do their jobs. Negative comments are made because of citizens not complying with the orders they are given. It's as simple as that.
You know what people??!?! These men and women deal with things on a daily basis that regular citizens could not even fathom. They go out every single day, knowing that this could be the last day of their lives. They deal with the lowest form of humanity. So if an officer pulls you over and isn't just all rosy happy and maybe a bit rude.. Get over it!! You don't know what kind of day he or she has had. They may have dealt with a drug dealer, an abused child, a car wreck with fatalities. These men and women are the first people to arrive when we need help, the first who will risk their lives, to save ours. So instead of getting upset when you get an officer who may not be as nice as you want or might be rude. Just try to remember.... You have no idea what their day or night has entailed. Show respect and thank them. They truly are our heroes. So to the men and women in the Norman Police Department.. Thank you! You are appreciated.
The police state is alive and well in Norman, OK. This is my first time in Norman, just pass through and I saw 8 different police cars in < 20 minute time frame all which had someone pulled over. One officer had someone pulled over in the middle of the road blocking one lane of traffic. I will never return to this city again, makes me rethink passing though OK at all again.
People shouldn t be able to camp in their cars in front of my house for weeks at a time. That is unsafe.
