No words to describe. Very nice, good one. Relaxed atmosphere, amazing paintings. Abd the best: you will find here the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Americas!!! Extremely recommend. Do not forget: this is free if charge museum. And the best time to visit is Sunday, because no charge for unlimited parking in the city and highways are free.

Let me start off my saying I have no formal training in art; however, I am an appreciator of it. I have been to art museums all over the world. I will say this, although, the National Gallery in London had more of the types of paintings I enjoy (deep contrast, vivid coloring), I did enjoy my time here. Speaking of time, you should devote at least two hours, and some of the pieces should not be rushed, and deserve the appropriate "admiring" time. My favorite part of this museum would have to be Van Gogh's self portrait. Although the paining is now over a 100 years old, the colors are as vivid as something that was painted yesterday. The museum has it tucked away near the back of the gallery, along with other Van Gogh paintings. I hope you to stop by here while you walk the mall, and wish you a wonderful time!

I think that this is my favorite museum in DC. There is just so much art here. It has the only Di Vinci's painting outside of Europe.

The building is owned by the US people but the art is privately purchased through an endowment established by early 20th Century Financier Andrew Mellon.

Lovely museum, helpful staff. I especially like a museum that has coat check, nothing more annoying than having to lug around heavy and/or wet coats.
The Gordon Parks exhibit was very well done. I was happy to see so many items of his represented. The impressionist exhibit was also wonderful. I would have liked to see more but had a plane to catch.

Went to the Tintorello exhibit.. Wonderful! Marvelous artist. A once -in-a-lifetime opportunity to see this range of his work displayed magnificently in one location. A don't miss event! And it was FREE!!

Disclaimer: this review is not a comment on the artwork, it is a complaint about the gallery's management. The gallery seems to distribute racist maps and recruit rude volunteers.

I visited the museum a couple months ago and loved it. But today I saw a post on a blog that had 5 million followers, complaining that the Chinese version of the gallery's map is racist. On the English map, every floor had a Tower, and every Tower was numbered 1, 2, 3 etc. But on the Chinese map, the word "Tower" was translated to "please do not touch the artwork" whenever it occurred. So on the Chinese map, instead of annotating that this place is "Tower 2", the map reads "Please do not touch the artwork 2" (in Chinese). Please note that there were 10 towers on the map, so a Chinese individual reading this map would be reading "please do not touch the artwork" 10 times on the same piece of paper. Although most Chinese characters have multiple meanings, the phrase "Tower" has no meaning even near "do not touch the artwork", so it is clearly an intentional "mistake". The original post said that they sent an email to complain to the gallery, but received a rude reply from a volunteer ( see attached pic). The volunteer did not thank the sender for their email, nor did he acknowledge the translational "mistake". The volunteer simply stated that the "do not touch" reminder may not occur at the same place on every map but did not address the difference in the number of the reminders between maps. The sender thus requested that the volunteer forward the email to his supervisor, but never received a reply.

I am saddened by the lack of organization in one of the most influential gallery's in the country. It is true that a number of Chinese individuals tend to ignore regulations at popular tourist sites, but to print a map that disrespectfully targets every single person who reads the language? That seems to be one step too far.
