Plain and simple, if you want to go, go as early as possible.
The Vatican was a must do for obvious reasons, but it's managed so poorly. Perhaps it's simply and impossible task as there's are so so many that wish to experience the city on any given day, but personally i think there's some adjustments that could supremely improve the experience.
To start, I believe there are 2 entrances. One that allows you entry into St Peter's square and the basilica, the other that allows entry initially into the Vatican museum then follows more a oath eventually leading to the Sistine chapel and ending with st Peter's basilica. The former is around 8 , the longer was 17 .
We arrived around maybe 1030/11 am and there were FLOCKS of people. Understandable, very unique place. As we approached SPsquare from the East there are countless people attempting to sell you expedited tours for around 35 . Perhaps they aren't scams and they're just expensive, but I didn't see 1 person take any of these people up. It's *literally* one after the next. Many wear attire similar to that of the Vatican patrolman and it's deceiving. Do not speak to anyone for help unless they're wearing a dark blue suit with the official Vatican coat of arms. They all have headsets as well. They only appeared at the entrances and onward.
The men selling hiked tickets, umbrellas, souvenirs really out a damper on the entire experience. On top of that, there's a section where you stop following the museum path and follow signs for the Sistine chapel. It takes awhile to get there and you're jam packed into massive crowds the entire time. There's simply not enough room and to be quite frank, if there was an emergency (fire/etc) it would be catastrophic. Sistine chapel is just guards telling you to keep moving St Peter's basilica was cool, just do that.
