A fantastic museum that is like a time capsule. There are displays that go back as far as Constantine, all the way up to the present day. We were lucky enough to have come on an evening tour and the museum was not crowded. Our tour guide was able to give fantastic insight into the pieces of art and relics on display. The artwork on the ceiling is amazing, it looks like 3D plaster but it's not it's actually all hand painted!

Myself not being an art enthusiast I can t comment in detail on what I saw inside, however, I can say that if you choose to visit the Museum wear some good walking shoes as on a busy day there can be very little breathing room and you ll spend an hour just trying to leave. Worth the visit by anyone interested in that time period however for the average person, I would advise against.

Beautiful place to visit, but there are far too many people at the same time. Beware of scam artists selling tickets to skip the line....most of them are frauds and you can get in easily without their help! If the weather is too hot and the line is more than 500 meters, then you could try them out! Don;t pay more than 35 euros

Great historical artifacts, paintings, sculptures and tapestries. They have fast lane tickets on line, purchase them if you can. Also, get the audio support so you get get an overview of the pieces you are looking at.

Spectacular place, full of history. This is a must visit place at least one time in life. If you go for the first time, go with guide in organized group to see and understand everything. Remember it is a very crowded place. A lot of turists want to visit it. Make reservation or at least go early in the morning.

The Vatican museum is a "Must to see and to do" in Roma. Take in consideration that the museum contains many dedicated areas by thematic. You need maybe a full day to visit and see all the museum. Buy the ticket directly inside the museum or online. Don't follow anyone outside specially who's introducing them self as museum employees. A good pair of shoes and a bottle of water are mandatory. Before starting the tour you can rent an Audiotel to have multimedia guide explanations.
I advise you to finish your visit with the Sistine chapel...incredible place, were the Cardinals select the new Pope. For children (over 5 years) they can make a dedicated tour with an Audiotel and a map (like a treasure hunt) allowing them to learn and play.

Me and my husband went to the Vatican museum on a guided tour. Although it was super busy, the tour was great. We did not see everything in the museum but of what we saw was truly amazing. Fresco paintings by Raphael in the museum and Michelangelo's master piece in the Sistine Chapel were the highlights.

Beautiful museum. I would give them a 5 if they didn't let so many people in at once! DO NOT GO OVER EASTER! There are TOO many people there and limted hours of operations for many of the sights!

Loads and loads of artwork to see. I recommend doing a self tour. Yes, the tour companies can help you skip the line, but inside, you will feel rushed. This place is nothing like the Louve. Its quadruple the amount of people and negitive quadruple the space, so it seems very cramped and rushed. Especially when you come close to the Sistine chapel. I highly recommend doing this regardless on what and how you feel about religion, art or culture.

Hype aside, the collection of art and the setting make this a "must." I live in Rome and have a general rule to not pay for "skip the line" entrance tickets. With rules made to be broken, I decided to go ahead and purchase. I'm glad that I did as there was already a 1-2 hour wait and people were lined up for several blocks.

Over crowded steaming hot place and u cannot skip anything, a guard would start having a go at you if u try to cut across to leave earlier. Shame as it has massive value the frescos and sculptures are amazing but the way its been organised is absolutely horrible

First off - don t pay the extra 7 for the audio tour. The audio tour wand (pictured) is buggy and shuts down randomly. We used a combination of the wand (very infrequently, when it actually worked) and the Rick Steves (free) walking tour. The walking tour is a much better option. It covers quite a bit (but totally skips over other - so, if you have time, make sure to at least walk through the areas.

We got the earliest possible tickets (9am for the day we went) and while it was crowded, I can imagine it being 10x worse during the summer. One tip we received (and followed!) was - get the earliest ticket and make a bee line for the Sistine Chapel. It gets progressively more crowded throughout the day. Go here immediately and then make your way around the other halls.

Outstanding works of art and the sublime Sistine Chapel alone justifies the long queues and price of the entrance. Mass tourism however takes away from the experience. I also feel that better guide books and material on the exhibits would enrich the experience. Unique!

Amazing sculptures and art. I'm not too big on art so for me it was just okay. It was very slow moving through the Vatican in July due to the sheer volume of tourists. Also, there is no A/C at all so it is hotter than hell the whole way.

Jaw dropping. Got the VIP pass that allowed entry before anyone else early in the morning. Totally worth it. Got disgustingly packed later but luckily we had already seen what we wanted to and were just on the way out.
Amazing experience. How on earth did humans create such wonder

Entry fee for museum (Vatican Museum & Sistine Chapel) is only 17 euro a person if you buy at the booth. If you get there at 8:30am, before the 9am opening time, there is basically no line.

It does not matter if you get there early or late, weekend or weekday, you will get blocked by large tour groups. Good luck and God speed.

It. Is. Massive. We tried to dress nice but I regret it, definitely go for conservative comfort instead! Overall amazing exhibition of every from paintings to sculptures, bronze work to coins. They had everything! Definitely go here with at least a half a day blocked out, if not more. Tour would be nice but they looked like they moved fast and missed alot. I would go self guided.

A must see when in Rome. Make sure to pay for the skip the line tour available from several travel companies. The line for standard admission was hours long. The tours are several hours and only cover a small fraction of the facilities. Good for a flavor of the amazing amount to see here. Suggest maybe more than one day of tours with different itinerary if you can handle the crowds and that much museum.

The number of visitors in October needs to be regulated but as such s money-spinner, will it be? Some of the chapels and rooms are stunning and the experience would be greatly enhanced by halving the number of visitors. Sistine chapel underwhelming when you hardly have room to even half turn. All photography should be banned. Buy a book or look online, your photos just interfere with others appreciation and will not do the exhibits justice.

Even though we went on a guided tour to miss the queues there were many many guided tours therefore many many people and guided tour queues. Having said that the Vatican Museums are still worth the visit. Just be prepared for a lot of walking and up and down stairs. Exceptional history and artifacts to see.

Museum itself, along with its layout, various content and all things that follow deserve nothing more than five stars. However!

The way visiting groups are handled is absolutely horrible. I was well aware for the need to wait for hours to get in unless you want to buy a VIP ticket, but once we got it, I have realized that getting a 40+ euro VIP ticket would be a waste of money.

First of all, tourist groups are absolutely not regulated, they crowd and block every single area, forcing you to follow their pace. For the love of ll of us people that are not part of those groups, at least limit their access to certain days of the week so we know when not to go.

Second of all, kids under 8-10 years of age really have nothing to do here. Not only are they noisy, disrespectful towards things presented and a hazard to walk around of in the massive crowd, strollets are also creating even more mess. What's the point of bringing a kid that cannot even comprehend the content of the museum in the first place? I am sorry, but it is just unnecessary.

All of this made our visit completely anti-climactic and delayed us so much that we only spent total of 2 minutes in Sistine Chapel that was also absolutrly crowded, full of guards rushing you forward, and the entirety of the space is so restricted that the area is anything but impressive. Overall, the organization could be much better and more comfortable for everyone.

If you feel indifferent towards the Catholic Church, this place will not change your mind one bit, there was Gold everywhere, and artifacts that are actually priceless, when you think of the money in this place and what it could do for people in the real world......
The lines to get in are unbelievable long, best advise I can give you is to book the fastpass on line before you go, that's what we done and skipped a que close to 1000 people the day we went, and don't mind any of the guys standing outside offering "upgrade" tours, they are just chancing their arms trying to get money out of you. Bring plenty of water, it gets very warm in there.
It's definitely worth your time to see it so don't take this review in a negative way one bit.

Don't go on your own, get a tour as you can bypass a lot of repetitive art galleries and rooms this way. Went twice, once a tour and once by ourselves and the latter was serious hell- stuck in the museum for two hours with no way of exiting, people pushing from every angle and just utter chaos. No reverence given to the religious aspects of the museum, no help from the staff and the state of chaos and volume of visitors added to an unpleasant experience. If you want to see the Sistine Chapel, do a tour, but then again, it's so crowded that there was nothing special about it.

We took a guided tour which was well worth the money. The security screening was not too bad. It was crowded even for late December and in some rooms you just had to go with the flow of crowd as there was no space to stand.

Almost every square inch of the building itself is covered in artwork, making just the building a museum on its own. Add to that all the art the building contains and it's a lot to see and take in. Take your time and enjoy it.

Amazing works of art. The Vatican itself is one of the most impressive and full of history places and it s just a pleasure to walk in its gardens and to be surrounded by so much exquisite architecture.

You must reserve at least 1 full day for a tour, to be able to enjoy to the fullest what the Vatican has to offer.

The museum collections are excellent. The crowds, however are not. At least during June it is insanely crowded and it's impossible to see most of the items. Sad to say, I think it is not worth it unless you find a time when it is not crowded. Good luck.

Gorgeous artifacts to appreciate no matter what religious affiliation. Must go see the Sistine Chapel!! Don't fall for the tour groups trying to sell you tickets on the street. They are 2x or 3x the cost of a ticket and even if there's a line, it goes pretty fast. Even if you buy a ticket online, you still have to go to will call and pick it up so don't bother. If you're a student, bring your ID to get a discounted price. They forbid taking pictures of the Sistine Chapel. Do some light research on it before hand so you can appreciate the ceiling more.

This was my second visit to the Vatican Museums (the first one being around 15 years ago) and it was still a great experience. This time we visited at night which was good as it allowed us to maximise our sightseeing time. Don't expect it to be empty though - it was still quite busy. The entrance was poorly signed and heaps of people were pushing in with no staff policing things. However, once inside things are a bit better. We prepaid for the audioguides which were worth it but take note the the fee does not automatically include earphones - either bring your own or pay 1.50 Euro for a single, uncomfortable earphone. Aside from the amazing artwork on display, remember to look up at the amazing ceilings or you will miss out on half the experience!

I was there only 2 hours so I did not even see a quarter of the museums. We focused on the Sistine Chapel and the Egyptian displays. On our way we did see the map rooms and other beautiful and iconic parts of the Vatican. It was so impressive to see "in person" the originals of images we are familiar with. No photos allowed in the Sistine Chapel, so take it all in while you're there.

Awesome museum. Make sure to the tickets online from their website, they re cheap and you also skip the line. The museum is huge. It took me about three hours to walk through it all but it can take all day if you take your time. No pictures are allowed in the Sistine Chapel.

Beautiful art ruined by an ocean of people pushing their way through the museum shoulder to shoulder in 100 degree heat with no AC. Complete waste of time since you can't even enjoy the art while you're busy fighting your way through the museum. I also found it ironic that the guards were constantly yelling "SILENCE" through a megaphone in the Sistine chapel to no effect. Do yourself a favor and stay at home and put aside an hour to Google images of the museum. It'll be a better experience than going there, I promise.

It is a nice place...but you cannot see anything for a long time, forget trying to read the little signs beside the statues, paintings etc. You are stuck in a long line getting to the Chapel. I am torn about this place. One the one hand, it was an exercise in poor crowd control. Horrendously over packed and you are forced to rush through without being able to look at anything in detail or to enjoy it. On the other hand, if they didn't let that many people in, i might not have been able to visit at all so i accept it is a balancing act. As it stands, the place and contents are amazing but i didn't get to really enjoy it.

So crowded but absolutely amazing. Surrounded by some of man's most beautiful works is sometimes overwhelming. This Sistine chapel is gorgeous but it built up too much. St. Peter's is truly a sacred place. Every stone, line, picture (mosaic), the Piata are all breathe taking and worthy of greatness.
