Little pricey. Really good food. Mostly small plates.
Fantastic food and wonderful atmosphere. Service was top notch.
Saw on diners drive ins and drives. Didn't disappoint! Food was super fresh and cooked perfectly. This took us over an hour to get there and we're going back at our first chance!
Food is amazing, staff is amazing, Atmosphere is amazing! I ordered the cornbread, fresh out of the skillet it was warm, flavorful and delicious. The bean spread on toast was also yummy. LOVED the wild boar meatballs! Will definitely return
Absolutely amazing. Fantastic food and delicious drinks, in a comfortable, laid back setting. Try the house made sodas! What a gem of a place.
If you're visiting from out of town this is an excellent place to visit in Portsmouth.
The owner and chef Matt Louis, who was named a semifinalist for the James Beard award a couple years ago, occasionally runs food to the tables and is quite entertaining if he has a second to chat before returning to the kitchen.
The prices reflect the quality of the food, not the quantity.
If you are not a fan of tapas or small plates then you will not like this restaurant.
I find it easy to fill two people for around $50-60 worth of food, minus drinks and a tip.
One of my favorite spots in Portsmouth! Great for date night or a girl's night. Unique flavors you won't get anywhere else in town.
Good food. The server could have tried to make an effort to give good service. Seemed like we were an imposition
As a chef I am rarely impressed with a restaurant from top to bottom but moxie had it all. Excellent mojito, interesting wines, great waiter and exceptional food. The bluefish, bone marrow, mushroom noodles and more were incredible. Thanks for being there.
If I'm going to a higher end restaurant I don't expect they're going to give me a cap on a time I can spend here. Save your time and go somewhere else
Well executed and excellent combination of flavors. A definite yes!
Good service, cute atmosphere, but don't you hate it when you spend almost $40 and are thinking about getting another bite to eat somewhere else on your way out? Prices are a bit too high for these tapas and taste-wise I have certainly been more satisfied with other locales.
Moxy is a foodie's staple.
The food is fresh and explodes with flavor. There are many options to suit any palette.
Tonight's meal started with the Roasted Farmers Carrots with beet relish, crispy onion, Chevre, and maple tarragon vinaigrette. It was unbelievable!!!
For dinner my wife ordered the Crispy Potatoes, spicy tomato with roasted garlic and herb sour cream and the burger sliders. That is an all-time favorite of hers. I ordered the New England Dinner 2.0, consisting of
Corned beef brisket, napa cabbage, crispy potato slivers, pickled onions & carrots with Raye's maple mustard. Holy smokes was this good!!! I absolutely loved this dish because it was built to use the nappa cabbage leaves like a taco or tortilla. This dish made it fun to eat your meal with your hands. Man was it delicious. I would definitely get it again.
For dessert we shared the Carrot Cake with brown butter-cream cheese and maple caramel sauce. What a great way to top off the meal. Moxy is a great place to go to give your tastebuds a workout. Everything is so surprisingly flavorful. It leaves you wondering what the next dish will be like.
As an FYI, the dishes don't all come out at once. They do a great job of spacing things out, which extends the experience. Reservations are highly recommended. No reservations for the bar, so if that is your pleasure, get there early as seating at the bar fills up quickly.
Ridiculous selection of small plates that is always changing to incorporate fresh, local ingredients. The cocktail list is also constantly evolving and has something for everyone. You can tell when you dine here the amount of love and effort that goes in to each dish. Highlights: New England Dinner 2.0, Short Rib Toast, Caramelized Onion Dip, Fried Clams, Chicken Fried Frog Legs, just to name a few. Also, you must end your time here with the Whoopie Pies!
Great food in small portions, friendly and beautiful setting ... I love the place
Super nice upscale spot with local vibe. Expensive though
This place is an American tapas style restaurant with DELICIOUS offerings. Definitely take advantage of their $1 refills for house made sodas. Their menu rotates a lot, but if any kind of ribs are on the menu, you'll want to try them. Also their assortment of puddings dessert is quite tasty! Friendly staff, and nice relaxed vibe. Also, check out the old magazine decoupage on the walls in the ladies room.
Went here for a final anniversary/birthday with my girlfriend before we went off to college.
Staff was amazingly excellent, they treated us so well, and the food was beyond imaginable. I had never experienced a Tapas style restaurant, and after this, I can't wait to come back!
I liked their the bone marrows dish and Brussels sprouts. Drinks were not the best.
I had a wonderful experience with this restaurant. I was visiting the area and needed to find out details about the restaurant beforehand. I corresponded with Owen who answered all of my questions and set me up perfectly to be able to order take out from them with the menu of the day. The results were amazing. The food perfectly satisfied both a carnivor and a vegetarian. I've definitely be going back soon.
American small dishes. We would call them tapas but they are too local for that. Great use of local ingredients and a great bar scene. Definitely a return destination.
Multiple James Beard awards, tapas style, inventive & bold seasonal New England inspired food. Really, really great food.
Good variety of offerings, interesting mixture of flavorings, prompt and nice service, delicious and filling meal!
Not cheap but food quality and creativity are off the charts. Good vibe, local and space as well.
Visited Portsmouth on a Monday night recently and was very pleased with my experience at Moxy. It was a quiet night, the bartender was open to chat and friendly, and the service was fast. Enjoyed the "build your own drink" element. I had the potato gnocchi with apple/ricotta/honey and it was excellent. Great flavor, really nice texture and perfectly cooked gnocchi. The plate was small but luckily I wasn't too hungry. My only feedback is to expand on the dessert menu- Options are limited and don't exactly seem to "fit" with the quality of the rest of the menu. Lovely experience overall though.
Great cocktails...food was good.if your not looking for a full meal but need something to eat then the small plates are perfect.
Although it can be a pain to get a seat without a reservation, I highly recommend making a trip here. The food is amazing and reasonable priced. The unique combinations make for outstanding tapas!
Great plates for sharing. So good! Highly recommended for anyone passing through town or staying the night. We will definitely be back!
I found the food to be good. Not great. Service was good. Portions good. A bit pricey for the type of food they serve. The boneless ribs on toast tasted like reheated crock pot meat. The sauce helped. Deserts were very good.
Only went for a short time but it was decent, not outstandingly memerable.
Excellent food, service and atmosphere. Can't wait to come back.
Food wasn t good. Heirloom tomatoes had no flavor, pork belly was overcooked and tough, lamb stew was so unseasoned I had to add a teaspoon of salt, but still had no depth of flavor. Haddock was fine but wasn t interesting or memorable in any way.
Fantastic menu, atmosphere and drinks. Everything is great, event he things you don t normally like . My suggestion just order the menu and graze.
The drink menu is inventive and creative (and extensive).
3 hour wait for a table although the whole 1st floor was open, the bar takes reservations which is ridiculous so people who want to wait for a table are out of luck
Great food, drinks and service! Unique American style small plates try out some of their classic offerings that are marked OG on the new menu.
Great food, fun environment. If you want a main course, traditional approach to dining, then this won't be your place. But if you like to experiment and share then this is a great choice. Enjoy!
Really impressive. I saw several awards for James Beard Semifinalist. How the chef was not the winner, I don't know.
All of the dishes were well presented and easy on the eyes. The flavors were bold but balanced from the starters to the main dishes all the way through to the decadent desserts.
This is our new stop off when crossing the Maine border. Phenomenal!
Go to Moxy! Right now, go! Or son took us there on a recent trip to Portsmouth. Great mixed drinks. And those amazing American food tapas. All of them were excellent. I particularly liked the calamari. Most of the time, calamari in restaurants is tasteless and you dip them in aioli to taste something, at least. In this dish the calamari itself was tasty. The clam dish was really good, too. But that may be off the menu by the time you go there. I told you to go right now, but you thought you could wait. Serves you right.
A great little place. Everything that I've had at Moxy has been excellent. The whoopie pie sliders are beyond delicious!!!
We just had drinks and apps. Craft liquors and drink menu. Loved the pork belly and cod croquettes....
Cool small place with amazing food. Great bartender and staff.
Great stuff here. Fast service and a good variety of tapas. It was all very tasty!
Great food and cocktail selection, not many options like this in the area!
A nice quiet pleasant place hidden away from the main roads
Got a chance to visit beautiful Portsmouth NH. What a beautiful chill city! Moxy was probably one of the best places I have eaten thus far. Each dish was full of flavor and everything on the menu was just amazing. I can definitely see why this place won a James Beard award.
Idk if it's"the best" restaurant in Portsmouth, but it's absolutely my favorite place to go with inventive food. They've won some James Beard awards so they are definitely good
Great food, rotating menu, interesting cocktails. Perfect for date night.
Absolutely delicious and perfect!! No complaints at all. Food was amazing and healthy and cheap, and came quickly. Every waiter/waitress was incredibly nice!! Recommend it for anybody who is smart
There was absolutely NOTHING we didn't thoroughly enjoy. I wish I had more to tell than "it was incredible", but it was so overwhelmingly good that there just aren't words. You would be doing a disservice to yourself if you didn't pop in, and give them a try.
Great friendly and innovative tapas bar. Excellent fusion of local food and global flavors!
Really can't think of anything they could do better. Outstanding American style tapas, we picked many, many dishes at random and they were all spectacular. Be sure and order something from the pickles menu. Superb wine list, clever and affordable. Excellent service. Gorgeous upstairs dining room with moderate acoustics permitting easy conversation.
Very pleasant surprise! We were on an unexpected one day excursion to Portsmouth and we were looking for a place for dinner. Saw that this restaurant was award winning with great reviews, so decided to give it a try. Outstanding! One of the best meals that we've had in a long time! Dishes were original and absolutely delicious. Coupled with some great drinks, this place is a winner. And, to boot, prices were very reasonable! Highly recommend!
We ate here twice on our vacation in Portsmouth because it was so amazing.
An American tapas bar that serves locally sourced food & drinks. Moxy can also essentially make anything gluten free as they have separate gluten free flour and are aware of cross contamination. It's a cozy location for a date night or a small group outing.
Not Spanish-y tapas, but bar tapas - which is good too. The mini-burgers, sausage rolls, goat cheese bruschetta, and whoopee pie sliders! Kind of dark inside, but pretty spacious!
Great vegetarian options! And custom cocktail options!
Food is always phenomenal. Their award winning chef is always coming up with new and delicious plates. It's best to get many plates and share so you can try all of it. Johnny cake community is my favorite dish! Moxy is my favorite restaurant in Portsmouth. It's not the cheapest but still reasonable and very worth it!
Good tasting food depending on what you want. Very small meat portions though, so you're primarily paying for sides.
This place is so fun for a date night, lots of unique things on the menu to try
Unique eats and friendly service! So many places do patatas bravas the wrong way, but not here. They were fresh and delicious. The beef short rib marmalade was bursting with different flavors. The restaurant was pretty busy... however the bartender was very attentive and friendly. Great atmosphere too!
this place is so fantastic we forgot to take pictures of any of the food!! We came here while visiting from NY. It was a saturday night, waited an hour for a table because our group of 4 didn't make reservations. The vibe is truly on point, very laid back ambience but more formal than just a casual bite. Service was great, waiter was really nice. The food, suffice it to say, we ordered at least 10 different dishes and nothing disappointed us, some that stood out were the pork belly and the braised beef short rib, also the brussel sprouts and the scallops, oh and the mini 8Italian sausages! Really recommend this place as you can see.
I can't get pver how good this place is. I loved the oyster and the burger. Yum.
Wonderful drinks, great locally sourced food and fabulous staff. If you have the chance to go here you always should!
It was pretty good, but I don't think any of the dishes were very creative or special. Drinks were good. A lot of the food was basically dressed up diner food; tasty, but not very exciting. Drinks were great, service was great.
Friendly wait staff, awesome bartender, incredible food and cocktails!
The food is so delicious! The small plates have such complex flavors and fun to share with friends!
The chef owner Matt Louis is a culinary genius, with the best tatapsand locally sourced product
Great food. Locally sourced. Modern plates. Creative.
The only reason for me to come back to Portsmouth is Moxy. From the staff to the meal & overall cleanliness this restaurant is amazing. The food makes me wish I could try everything!!! Thank you Moxy for such a great time.
The tapas are delicious. The menu is always changing, which I like. Going in and seeing what s in store is always a delight. A little pricey but definitely worth it. The food and drink menu is never a let down. I give it
Came in with high expectations, but didn t live up to the expectations. Service wasn t very quick or friendly and for a James beard nominated chef way to many things came out of a fryer, including the brussel sprouts, fish, and potato dishes. Waiter didn t seem too knowledgeable as he couldn t even remember the few beers that were on tap.
