Probably your best option if you're trying to find a hotel in Banbury. Good breakfast spread and decent coffee, room sizes can vary widely and the building itself is pretty old. There's a lot of noise from other guests in the hallways, but I found people mostly courteous during my stay. Plenty of hot water in the shower and the staff are friendly. Of note, the access to the car park is through a very tight opening, so be careful if you have anything larger than a compact car.

'Historical' part of the hotel should actually be described as old, cold and tatty...in need of some TLC. Could still be historical but radiators should be ON by default...floorboards shouldn't creak so much and so loud that neighbours wake you up in the night and windows shouldn't be so draughty that they blow the shower curtain inwards! Breakfast was good tho.

It's a delicious building and could be superb but there is lack of attention to detail. Rooms were clean and nicely furnished.
But ill fitting secondary double-glazing and a tepid radiator meant firstly I had to change room. This was no trouble and the staff stepped up to the mark. But a poorly stocked bar, poor attention to the grounds, cigarette ends around entrances as there was no ash-tray, sharp-cornered table at head-height next to the bed, mixed up service at breakfast, all meant it was an average stay overall.

Nice building (at least the old part) with wood paneling, pleasant gardens and plenty of character but a bit tired and our room at the front of the hotel was a little noisy. It was very hot in our room due to hot weather and it was not possible to ventilate it sufficiently to reduce the temperature.

Excellent location in historic building. Easy walk to a number of good restaurants and pubs. Don't miss the Auctioneer and the Olde Reindeer Inne. Breakfast at the hotel is excellent and you can request Eggs Benedict cooked to order. Very friendly staff, good parking, fast WiFi, good water pressure with nice showers. I got good sleep here and enjoyed my stay.

This is at the lower end of the Mercure range of hotels. Service was great and front desk was very friendly and accommodating. The rooms are very dated (or some may say it has 'character') ... Our room had creaking floorboards, which is fine when we are awake. But when you can hear creaking floors from the room above all night, that's a different issue. It stopped us from having a good night's sleep. We checked out 1 night in because it was so bad. (also, separate hot / cold taps in the bathroom! Why?!)

Brilliant and friendly helpful staff went to murder mystery night new years eve food and entertainment was fab. Criticism would be bar fairly small especially when there is a a function on. Some communal areas have been updated with a more modern look which is a bit of a shame as it seems a bit out of keeping of character with the hotel.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights. We had an excellent room at the back of the hotel looking over a garden. The room was well equipped and the bathroom and shower were excellent. The off-street parking was most appreciated, spacious and easily accessible. The staff were kind, welcoming and at all times very courteous. Unfortunately, the breakfast was excellent one day, and then very much below the previous day's standard the next, with a lot of the cooked buffet breakfast food, e.g. eggs and bacon being well overcooked, such a shame that it was not consistently as good. We would, however, certainly stay here again.

It's only ok at best. Twin beds made in to a super king or possibly bigger. Shower curtain hung in line with the bath so too narrow when you're in. Shower head on wall too low, plenty of pressure though, heat doesn't seem to last so you have to override the thermostatic mixer safety button.

The hotel is almost unbeatable from the location. The access to the parking lot is extremely narrow (due to the age of the building). The rooms I had so far were always clean, as were the bathrooms. Generally the rooms but not the 'most modern'.

Won't ever be going back there again, no issue with the hotel it's the traffic wardens who creep about the place waiting until one minute past your parking ticket time and then whack a ticket on your screen and slink off.

Overall, it was a very nice stay. The lady at the reception was perfect, she helped me with a phone charger and relocated my first room (which smelled of cigarette). The restaurant is good and proposes vegan dishes, which for me consists of a strong strong point. The whole hotel is built in a quite old building but it is well designed (no lift though). There is a bathtub in the room and the bed was big and clean.
However, there were also some downsides: the rooms' walls are quite thin and you can here the TV from next door. The person in the room next to mine kept it turned on all night so it was not very comfy and woke me up several times in the night.

A lovely place to stay and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Thank you for being great hosts and for helping to get my wife's hair free from her umbrella as we left to head over to a wedding! Although we live in Australia if ever we visit UK again we would be sure to stay at Whately Hall again

Sarah and I really enjoyed our stay. Staff were very pleasant. Breakfast was excellent. The room was very cosy despite the extremely bad weather outside. In fact we had to turn the heating down. Would definitely stay again and would certainly recommend.

Nice hotel in the center of Banbury. The breakfast is very nice with a discreet variety of food. The rooms are big and clean. The hotel has got an interesting architecture as it is a modern extension to an older building.

Stopped by for drinks in the bar. Reasonable prices, lovely old building, beautiful garden to sit in. Didn't stay for food as restaurant looked dead. Some peeling wallpaper in bar could do with being fixed as it looks a bit grotty.
