Everyone happy with their choice. Service was great. We have nothing but praise for Ron. He took care of our cars, helped us with directions and was fun to talk with! Thank you all for a wonderful visit.
It was just OK. Had better. Not worth $80.00 for lunch for 2 people.
If like German food, you MUST go to Madera! Very authentic food and old world atmosphere. A Milwaukee tradition that visitors have to experience... many do because we locals take you here. Hard to park, but worth the hassle. Beer selection is outstanding and service is great. Great old building. Go and enjoy.
Went with my father for lunch and the meal was delicious! They have such a wide variety of food selections. I will definitely be coming back to Mader's!
Great decor and authentically delicious german food.
I have had some German food before and it wasnt my favorite type, but after coming here, I have never had German food before. We started with the Bavarian & pretzel, then ordered the Oxtail soup and Liver dumpling soup, both outstanding. We split the Veal and King Crab Schnitzel. The food was really good. Nothing like the German food I have had. This place is on my list to come back, when I come back to Milwaukee. Definitely a place you have to go to.
Wonderful old world atmosphere in a historic building, with old artifacts on display, such as suits of armour. Lots of famous people have been there over the years & they have pictures to prove it! A Milwaukee treasure & one of a kind unique place.
Awesome food, great atmosphere and the best service. It's expensive but wirth it for any special night out or holiday special they may have. Perfect for a romantic outing, business dinner, or family event.
We stopped in for a beer and appetizers before the Bucks game.
They have a nice bar menu for food. I would like to see a Caesar salad added to the menu...just saying.
Formal German dining in the heart of Milwaukee. Delicious, gorgeous decor, good service. Beer selection. somewhat expensive, and parking can be tricky, but worth a visit when you're in Milwaukee.
Great service and food! There is a lot of history in the restaurant.
Wide range of menu options, we went with two traditional German dishes. The generous quantities were appropriate for the prices, and each item was tasty and well prepared. Ambiance was something to appreciate without being cheesy. Good service from the staff.
Lovely place. Tasty foods. Very good experience. Recommended.
Was really disappointed with the weinerschnitzel. I think the waitress suggested mushroom sauce just to cover up how dry and bland it is. For the price I expect to be blown away and I certainly wasn't. I've had much better and for far cheaper. I guess if you're trying to impresse someone with how much money you'll throw away on mediocre food this is your spot.
Also if you think this is authentic German/Hungarian, it's not.
Best German food anywhere. Try the pork shank. Best on the menu
Wonderful building and interior. Oxtail soup was very good and tasted of barley although could have used more oxtail. Wiener Schnitzel was pretty good. Tour of Germany easily served 1 adult and 3 teens and was a good value @ $86 with delicious pork shank, schnitzel (with mushroom gravy for $1), dry but flavorful sauerbraten, dry ribs (tasted and looked like dry ham), decent spatzle with little flavor, superb red cabbage, and ordinary sauerkraut. Apple strudel was delicious although a bit too sweet. Best of all was the 1/2 liter Weihenstephen Dunkel (oldest brewery in the world). Judy, our server, was not friendly in the least and I wish her happier days.
Great German themed place to satisfy your beer and brat cravings!
Wonderful staff and eclectic atmosphere. It is refined without being stuffy, and the staff makes you feel very welcome. With free valet parking and great authentic german cuisine, this place is a must stop for Milwaukee (especially if you're going to the Forum nearby). While the price seems expensive at first, the servings are huge and there is no upcharge for splitting an entree between two people. One of the oldest buildings in the area, they've seen the faces of many famous actors, dignitaries, presidents and the like. I myself sat where Bob Hope was once seated. They also have special accommodations for birthdays as well. Affordable, inviting, and historical I definitely recommend it for your next visit to the area.
Excellent German food. Great dessert, give the Black Forest cake a try
The food was great, but the service at the bar was horrible. I asked for a glass of water and it didn't arrive. Finally, I asked the owner and he brought it. I was by myself and the bartender basically ignored me after taking my order, while talking very amiably with couples around the bar. Their bread came very quickly, whereas mine came at the same time as my food at which point I was interested in my mal and not the bread. Being made to feel like a 2nd class citizen ruined a meal I had been so looking forward to because several people had recommended the restaurant. Not sure that I would go back.
Everything about our meal here was superb. Service excellent. We started with a Bavarian weisswurst, pretzel, and fried pickle appetizer. Excellent. My wife had the beef and mushroom strudel with German potato salad. I had the wiener schnitzel with spatzel. Outstanding. We finished with black forest cake. Yum. If you like authentic German food, do yourself a favor and eat at Madar's the next time your in Milwaukee.
Went for brunch buffet delicious food, live entertainment, kind attentive service, definitely would come back.
The restaurant is beautiful in shape we asked for two dishes all bad I would not recommend the place
Love the bar and atmosphere, the food is very authentic and delicy
Best German restaurant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin! Has every kind of German food!
Best place for traditional German food in Wisconsin!
When you ask me what restaurant you should go to in Milwaukee, I will definitely lead you here. This German restaurant has lots of high quality food, especially their sausages. Their only setback is the price, but, if you ask me, it's worth it.
A bit pricey but a beautiful setting. Great service and amazing food. Will definately be back. Highly recommended.
This restaurant is my preferable site. Of all restaurants I know I love it most. I always suggests to my friends to go to visit this restaurant. Whenever I want to go to a decent meal, this is the place that comes immediately to my mind. fresh and diverse food and a rich menu.courteous crew, and pleasant atmosphere. And very important, the cost is reasonable. I tell about this place with no hesitation.
ehhhh... had two mains here very sub par. The onion soup was okay but the pork special and mac and cheese with scallops lacked in the flavor department. I would never recommend this place. I'd probably happily pay $7.50 for the quality of the food I had there. The waitress was friendly but inattentive and rather distracted. Super bummed we blew over $100 for two mains and soup... I've had better meals at Olive Garden.. and well that is saying a lot.. Would not recommend and would not go back.
Saw Casey Webb Ate your Giant Pretzel, & Your Pork Shank with Apple Demi Gloss, Kraut, & Potatoes
First of all valet parking. Tip 5 bucks and you're good compared to the outrageous parking in the surrounding area. Second our server joey was phenomenal 10/10 was attentive and polite. Never left us wondering. Drinks were amazing my fiance got a BlackBerry sangria which she claimed to be the best she's ever had. I had a weissbeir which almost broght a tear to my eye. 10/10. Finally food. We had the tour of Germany which was lamb shank which melted in your mouth like butter. Weinerschnitzel which we substituted the pork for veal to die for. Plus several other traditional German favorites. I only give this 8/10 because we did not care for the saurbraten. Not because we didn't like theirs we just don't care for it in general. Great experience. A little pricey but weve seen worse.
Love this restaurant great food , visited close to Christmas and a lovely gentleman sang Christmas songs in German while we ate lunch . So much history and the food is excellent . Those Reuben rolls , wow
Great authentic german food, service was friendly and pretty fast. We had a nice German wine with the meal. We enjoyed seeing all the photos in the hall of famous visitors. The batmobile photo was the best!
Old world charm. If you like German food this is the place to be.
If you haven't been here for awhile, you should go back. If you haven't ever been here you should put it on your list. It's an institution in Milwaukee full of star history and authentic good German food along with great beer.
A historic Milwaukee establishment. Old world cuisine at its finest. 2 thumbs waaay up. A trip to the city of Milwaukee is NOT complete without a stop at this gastro-gem.
Beautiful old world charm and ambience.
Our recent visit was to the knights bar on a saturday afternoon. Excellent selection of German and European beers and wine.
Nicely prepared sampler plate was plenty for two to share .
We stop in often to enjoy the old Milwaukee vibe.
Dinner menu is ridiculously expensive, food was fine, service was not very good.
Wow! Come in for the giant pretzel....it just so happened to be happy hour. Tried a few German beers on tap.
Awesome food and atmosphere but definitely on the pricier side.
The buffet was very good and the service was excellent. Tons of authentic options and the restaurant looked the part! Definitely check them out if you're visiting.
The food is pretty authentic. The vibe was awesome. The people are friendly. What more can I ask of a restaurant?
Was there for the Sunday brunch and it was excellent. Besides the great food, everyone that was working there was a real class act. A special "hats off" to Billy, Mader's good will ambassador. There's no question why Mader's is a Milwaukee icon and has thrived for over one hundred years.
Really good service, very authentic, loved the Weiner Schnitzel, and sauerkraut.
Excellent food and atmosphere. Service lacking. Menu extensive.
Would go again for the very good German food.
We went here back in February and I forgot to write a review. The atmosphere was incredible we loved all the antique items and paintings. Had an excellent beer and a serving of several sausages which all but one were very good. My wife had a great beef dish with a gingersnap sauce that was insanely good I regret not getting it. Was very pricey but I think it was well worth it.
Amazing food, would highly recommend to anyone looking for good German food.
I sat at the bar (not busy) for 15 minutes waiting for service. The bartender made eye contact then quickly grabbed menus, only to WALK BY me and put them away. Never even asked me if I wanted to order anything. I walked out...
So very nice to get back to Mader's atmosphere and good food.!! John Lamm
of Jackson.
Delicious traditional German food. All the rest have closed. This is the last, great German restaurant in the Midwest. The only other great one I know of is The Ambry in Fort Lauderdale. None are left in Chicago. So sad.
Excellent food. The chicken with spatzle ws great.
Pricey, but good. I have only been here a few times. In the past I have gone with schnitzel or sausages and really enjoyed it. This time I had the scallop mac and cheese and wasn't overly impressed. The sauce was rich and the pasta heavy, which I like, but it didn't have a sharp note like cheddar or a spicy note like Sriracha and for me that is disappointing. I am still giving a 5 star rating for this visit based on previous dining experiences.
Really high quality German food, with a very professional and pleasant staff. Will absolutely return.
It was a very good time with family! The meal very good along with the drink. Sitting in the beer garden was also good.
What a great and unique dining experience. Amazing furnishing and style. German, Bavarian menu. I had a stuffed pepper soup and hot bread. My entree was Weiner schnitzel (pork) with Mushroom gravy. And the red cabbage. So delicious. Too full to even consider dessert. This place has been visited by so many presidents and other celebrities. It I my books is a must see in Milwaukee
The best restaurant in Milwaukee. We went twice on a weekend visit. The food is beyond phenomenal and authentically German. The atmosphere is inviting, comfortable, and it's cool to see all of the celebs that have stopped by on the wall on the way to the restroom. The waiter on the bartender side was one the most professional, friendly, and attentive waiters I've ever come across. I recommend this as a must do in Milwaukee.
They were out of Izze pops and two starters already. We got two malawachs to split - one chicken, apple, and blue cheese (Brie was subbed bc they ran out of blue) and one Brie, smoked dates/almonds, and peppers and O...M...G. We pretty much ate in silence because they were that delicious. A flavor explosion of deliciousness.
The best version of German food I've ever had in America, besides my mom's cooking! Would go back to Wisconsin just to eat here.
Mader's is interesting. The German decor is great and it's really cool seeing pictures of the people that have dined there. Unfortunately their food seems to have aged along with their clientele. My family and I stopped for lunch and we were the youngest table by decades. I'm not bashing them for catering to their customers, but for me the food was just too bland.
Excellent service, excellent food. Very knowledgable staff.
Well, the impression varies greatly depending on the expectations, right?
This time I've had a huge difference, and it wasn't in favor of the place.
After checking recent reviews, restaurant interior photos and overall fame around the area, we decided to arrange our corporate dinner at Mader's.
First of all, I didn't really like the requirement to come up with specific meal preferences for every guest in advance if there are more than 25 people expected. Okay, rules are rules, but why ask every single participant again and still make us wait for food?
Even before that there were a lot of hiccups. Only one server worked on drinks for 26 people, and it predictably took a while. Others couldn't even choose as only three menus were distributed.
Finally, the food. It's decent at most. Dressing for the vegetable salad is plain disgusting, portions are quite small, and these people simply don't know how to cook schnitzel.
Beer is also below average on taste and quite expensive, around $8 per pint.
The only positive note was strudel for dessert, everyone really liked it. The interior is cool indeed, but it doesn't justify price tag and lack of decent cuisine.
Fabulous!!!! The food was delicious. The pretzel was my favorite!! Service was good. Loved the valet parking.
Authentic food, subdued lighting and ambiance, wonderful wait staff!
Outstanding German Food. Friendly staff, excellent plates and prices.
You have to go once for the decor. Food was ok except the strudel which was exceptional.
Best German restaurant in the country. Excellent food, homey atmosphere, and cordial service.
Maders had good authentic German food and nice beer selection. The old style atmosphere and many decorations were in full effect.
