Love the fish market but left disappointed after dinner recently. I know they use quality fish but $15 for fish & chips that was 3/4 potatoes and 2 small pieced of fish wasn't a good value in my book. I'll still come by to get fresh fish to cook at home, but probably not returning to eat.

You pay for what you get. This place has premium fresh fish. So freaking good.

I picked up a dozen oysters to shuck myself for $15.50, and a beautiful chunk of fish.

The place is expertly and safely run. Great seafood selection.

Flying Fish is a very seafood seafood bar. They have been actively promoting the sustainable use of seafood resources. The owner Lyf Gildersleeve will be happy to share the topic about ingredients with you, after all, "delicious" is a selling point that he is always proud of.
The menu is very rich, and it also takes special care of vegetarians-oysters, Cioppino (Italian seafood soup), overcooked Louis salad, and tuna with Argentine parsley sauce ... You have eaten unique in Oregon Rock fish? Haven't tried it, you can try something new, it looks dark but very delicious!
It doesn't matter if you don't want to eat meat, the choice of 3 dishes will always leave a delicious place for vegetarians.

Fish & chips uses a shared fryer so good for people avoiding Gluten but not celiacs like me. They told me about the shared fryer quickly & cheerfully when I asked with none of the weird pressure to risk it some places do. The clam chowder is safe and tasty! Tables are outside, well spaced, hand sanitizer on each, and "silverware" is in sealed compostable packs.

Great experience (my first time trying oysters). Staff was helpful and suggested trying a variety. I would have liked to see crab on the menu but understand it's limited to what they have in that day. Venue is great, located in a little market type building, which I enjoyed walking around in and browsing too.

It's hard to get fish anywhere else after trying it here. I love how fresh the fish is, and how they have a focus on sustainability. Now I just need to practice my fish cooking skills to match the quality I get here.

FLYING FISH has many handcrafted fats, oils, tallows, and other foods you'll like if you're into any paleo/keto/whole30/wildfit style eating. This selection I haven't found anywhere else in Portland; World Foods is also a great place to check out if you like Flying Fish Co.

The tuna poke was pretty good, good sauce although the rice was a bit overcooked. Tried 4 kinds of oysters, listed in order of preference: Kusshi, Kumamoto, Virginica, Shigoku. The dipping sauces were good but unneeded for most of the oysters because they had great flavor by themselves. Very fresh would come back.

Sort of a mixed bag. They have FABULOUS meat/deli and cheese counter. The Oyster bar is really nice too. A wide variety of ecclectic foods and seasonings. However, I drove there specifically to get fish for sashimi. Website said they have a variety of species in the freezer. When I got there, they didn't have what I was after (Yellow tail). I asked and was told that it was sort of hit-or-miss. So, I found a few other things instead. Parking is limited (about 18-20 spots) and very cramped, so don't come in your Escalade or Truck with the 8' bed.

I was raised in a fishing family on the East Coast. Only had fresh fish from a shop or restaurant two or three times in California over the course of 18 years including all of the best offerings from LA and San Francisco. Started enjoying Sushi again in Oregon. This shop is the real McCoy. So unexpected - I can buy a filet and smell the salt and iodine of the ocean - a lot of this seafood is <24hours from the water.

Lyf is one of a few fish mongers who I trust to bring me "authentic" fish. What I mean by that is many restaurants aren't truthful about where their fish is caught, whether it was line caught or farmed. I've been burned by some establishments that one would think would be truthful. I trust Flying Fish....and that's maybe the best compliment I could give.

Extremely fresh fish. And the lamb I cooked up the day of was ultra-delicious. Their cheese selection is solid, and they ran out of regular milk when I was there...no worries, since they offered some great chocolate milk instead! Definitely coming back as often as I can!

If you re a fan of fish and ousters, you have to stop here. The food is fantastic, with ehalthy portions and the highest quality fish. I got the fish salad which was full of herbs and delicate greens and a huge piece of grilled salmon. I also got the cioppino, which was full of fish and super flavorful. My partner had the fish sandwich, which he loved. They have adapted well to covid, setting up a super nice outdoor seating area with a fire pit. We will be regulars here. It may look a little pricey, but it really isn t when you factor in the quality and quantity. Oysters were amazing too.

I woke up craving fish and chips. I probably would have been happy with any plate plate of fish and chips that arrived in front of me, but...HOLY COW! These guys blew my expectations wildly out of the water! The fish was impeccably fresh and cooked to perfection, the chips were so delicious, and the tartar sauce. THE. TARTAR. SAUCE! (You guys, I'm not sure I've ever wanted to eat tartar sauce by the spoonful before this!)

While I'm gushing about what an incredible experience we had at Flying Fish, I'll just mention that the oysters on the half shell were some of the best I've had, the staff were all friendly and accommodating, and their patio is perfect for an afternoon beer! In the time of COVID, I was so pleased to see every precaution they are taking to make this a safe and enjoyable dining experience. I'll be dreaming about this place until I have a chance to come back...!

I considered myself a smoked fish lover. I was looking for a good place to get my smoked fish, when I ran across this gem. The quality of their preparation, and the fish that they smoke has me returning often. Of note besides the smoked salmon, are the sable fish and the albacore tuna. Not always available, but things this good shouldn't necessarily be within grasp at all times. Fresh meat (beef lamb pork), fresh seafood (scallops oysters and fish) there is something here for just about everyone. Combine with the excellent farmers market next door, and I could just get all of my dining needs at this point corner of 23rd & Hawthorne. An absolute must for you to try.

New full service restaurant and market is very unique. The staff seemed friendly and willing to help me with my question about the different types of fish. The clam chowder was good with large peices of clams and the toasted baggett is a nice touch. There was a little to much salt in the soup though for my taste. Overall a great spot to sit and watch the Portland life go by outside while enjoying a light bite.. Though with limited seating I bet it might be a challenge to enjoy as much time when they are busy. There is a sign asking people to be aware of others waiting.

Flying fish has the most ridiculously fabulous quality of meats/seafood ever. Can't be beat. And they're now located in basically the fanciest most carefully curated market I've ever seen...puts Whole Foods to shame. Like the fanciest Parisian market deli produce shop alive. I feel like I'm a movie star here and get very well fed. Ugh so fancy.

I met my daughter here for lunch. People were friendly. My chef's choice of the day was covered with cilantro, which I cannot eat -- wish I had known in advance, so that I could have asked them to leave it off. The clam chowder was really cream of bacon soup. Never saw or tasted a clam. Fish and chips were good. One bowl of soup, two entrees, and one cocktail came to $67. Silverware, napkins, and water are self-service, and you have to order at the counter. Will not return.

Extremely rude hostess with mediocre food, definitely not worth $16 for a small portion of dry ceviche. Honestly the poor service and rude hostess left such a sour taste in my mouth. Do not recommend and certainly will never go back.

Prices are high but not surprising, as everything in this location is.
I was hoping for fresh fish, but was disappointed to see that they only had a very small selection of fresh and rest was frozen. Probably won't go back.

For a fish chips place this is a perfect place to grab a table, enjoy a meal and sip some suds outside while hanging out with friends even during the Covid year as the tables are socially distant and clean. Also the staff are professional and courteous. Afterwards you are primed locationally to walk in laurel Hurst park, go music shopping at music millennium, see a movie at laurelhurst theater, or catch fifty licks Icecream.

High quality seafood and courteous service. We've been buying fresh from them for some time, and enjoying oysters at Providore. This was our first time at the restaurant. Fish tacos were great; the fish was perfectly fried with a nice crunch, tacos were simple. Feel free to add some seasonings if you like. Portion size is a little small for the price, but not the quality.

The man said it, and I didn't believe him. The cashier says "the smoked salmon will be the best you've ever had." Needless to say, I bought it and loved it and the prices are comparable to Safe-way, but the quality supercedes and is in a class of its own.

We used to go to Providore and loved Flying Fish. We were stoked to see them get their own shop. Everything is so fresh. Whether you want to grab some ingredients to make it at home or kick back at their outdoor set up, it's all excellent quality, super delicious and I can't say enough about the owner. Checks in with customers and was always personable and friendly when we'd sit at the Oyster bar. Support FF during these trying times. They are the real deal.

Pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food and the ample outdoor seating. We tried cioppino, clam chowder, fresh oysters, salmon poke. They were all fresh and flavourful - even better than some of the more pricier restaurants. Happy to see all compost-able containers, plates, cutlery... the bamboo-like plate looked too sturdy to throw away. Good pour on the sake. Hope they survive the pandemic!

Sad, gross and extremely expensive for what you get. My taco tortillas were old n cold.felt like I was chewing ruber. My partner's fish n chips were over breaded n overcooked. And worst of all the jojo's were horrible. How can u go wrong with French fries? Well, its possible, take it from me.
