The location of the JW Marriott Essex House is cle...

The location of the JW Marriott Essex House is clearly quite good, with a lot of 5-star hotels in its vicinity near central park.

Our first experience was checking in, which was later in the evening if I recall correctly. The staff granted the SPG Gold 4PM late checkout without any issues, but was very stiff and unattentive, even when comparing it to other 3 and 4-star hotels such as Moxy Times Square or Renaissance Midtown NYC. The experience is more personal and welcoming in Mandarin Oriental or Four Seasons (which are both 5-star hotels). Other staff - such as at the elevators - would see us but ignore us entirely. This is below par for a 5-star hotel.

When entering the hotel room, the room (Room 1448) was quite spacious but felt a little bit dated. The bathroom has ample space, but due to its old design the bathtub itself is cramped like you would expect in a 3-star highway hotel. I believe that the Central Park view would be great, but as we got a hotel room on the other side we looked down on waste from contruction work and scaffolding in front of one of the two small windows. For a lower price, you can get a very nice room with an amazing view in Renaissance Midtown, which is a 4-star hotel with a much better interior design. Toiletry kits we pre-ordered were unfortunately never delivered. Also we were told someone would fix the lamp (which did not turn on) the next day but that did not happen.

When having a status (SPG/Marriott), the executive lounge is a bonus (but again a nicer one in the 4-star Renaissance Midtown) but is not open every day. The breakfast served in the lounge is good with sufficient choice, but it is very small for the size of the hotel. Therefore it feels slightly claustrophobic.

The hotel is decent, but does not compete with other hotels in this price range.

We spent 3 nights here. Location was good, but had really bad experience with housekeeping problems. Manager was not helpful and making excuses rather than to solve the problems.
Hotel really should re-do and improve the manager training in the near future. Also the room has serious noise problem, please fix it quickly or don t sell the room.

All the experience was terrible, the front Desk personal (Georgia) was very rude, the Manager, is just decoration. The barhroom has cockroach (picture posted), and the paint of the bathtub is falling, the room is 859. What a bad time we have!!!

Absolutely no staff available to accommodate the guests, manager on duty, Anthony, said "we are 100% oversold and only have one runner so we can't bring you a robe or washcloth". Completely inadequate experience.

JW Marriott Essex house was beautiful! The staff was friendly and helpful. The concierge was very helpful in answering all of our NY questions, and my favorites were the bell men. They hailed cabs for us, were super friendly, and were just very good at their jobs. Beautiful rooms. The only downside for me would be the view from our room, but maybe this is just New York. IDK. We had a view of another tall building...not very exciting to look at a wall.

Our first NYC experience and I wasn t going to gamble on lodging. The staff from check-in to check-out was outstanding, but I have to give a special nod to the concierge crew, especially Cameron. They made us feel confident, informed and ready for Manhattan before we arrived via e-mail and while we were there visiting with them each day. Indeed this hotel was pricey, but that s to be expected given the time of year, perfect location across from Central Park, adjacent to Columbus Circle and within walking distance to so many places not to mention it is literally on the Macy s parade route. We d stay here again without a doubt.

Beautiful overnight rooms with quaint details that completely make the hotel feel like home. Bathrooms could use a touch up but it could also be for the ambiance of the hotels historical feel. All in all, would say here again for an indulgent night out

You pay $ 400 a night and then when you try to take $ 4 worth of bananas and oranges from the executive lounge to your room because you have a special diet and out of the food they serve that's the only thing you eat, they say no and they treat you like a thief. Are they for real?
The most unfriendly Marriot we stayed at. Disgusting.

I would like to give this hotel a 5 star, but to do so would mean a perfect experience with higher standards than a similar hotel, especially ones that are in the same Marriott hotel family that offer the same amenities or even a little less. Rooms are gorgeous, hotel is gorgeous, that's the 5 star piece, but what brings it down for me is the Executive Lounge experience and rules. It's open everyday for breakfast, not every day for dinner. My wife and I stayed here on the weekend (most people would for a vacation) and the Executive Lounge is not open for dinner Fridays or Saturdays, which means we didn't even get to experience it. Also, it's not accessible all the time for coffee or water. He's the best, my wife was sick in bed and I wanted to bring her some breakfast in bed. I made a small plate of food and put a cover on it to prevent spilling or accidental mess, and as I'm leaving with the food i wish the the Executive Lounge greeter (whos head was down looking at her phone and not paying attention) to have a good day. She immediately gets up and refuses to let me leave with the food and says it needs to stay in the lounge. I forfeit the food to her and go back to my room empty handed. Not only is this creating a bad experience for which I will not come back to this Marriott again, but they would rather throw away the food, tell I can't do something rather than be proactive and maybe possibly use a solution of offering room service to transport it to my room if they were worried about spilling or accident. Very disappointed.

Right next to Central Park, conveniently located. Not far walk from The Met or Zoo. Clean room and friendly service. Might be smaller than most hotel but it is NY standard. The beds are very comfy and the pillows are great. I got the best sleep here than other hotels.

Bring lube this place has the worst service and staff I have encountered. No bell hop, valet has a chip on his shoulder, front office hands you your key and bills you no directions or assistance.
Coffee while we wait for the car [30 min] 10 bucks a coffee bahahahahha c'mon I get it great location and building, good rooms but pretend like 280 bucks still classifies you as a customer....this place is almost laughable.
Ps the Internet charge doesn't account for horrible connection and the 24 hr valet gets charged every time you use your car. Something that you would imagine would be told to you on the invoice or before retrieving your vehicle.
IMO theses guys are at best well dressed crooks.
Stayed February 2014, traveled as a couple

the location was exceptionally fancy. the lobby was so spacious and grand, as well as the other rooms. the chandeliers were abundant and huge. I felt undeserving to be there. the service was very good as well. I accidentally spilled some lemonade and shamefully walked away... but the next minute the mess was gone. I was great full at the quick and efficient service. the food was also very good.

Awesome stay. Wifi was easy, very courteous and helpful staff, many amenities and location is great! For the money, was surprised to find a q-tip that was missed in the bathroom (to be fair, it was not in a very noticeable place) and a couple strands of hair in the shower. Also, the plugs for the night stands are awkward and had to do some creative plugging to get everything to work.

Unbeatable location, newly renovated bodies very comfortable especially the bedding and the high quality mattress.
The only bad thing is that they charge if you want to have a view and if you don't pay they give you a room with a view of a wall

Location is awesome and so was the service. Concierge service was exceptional. The only single improvement that can be made is that the rooms need a bit of a make-over (a tad antiquated).

Love the breakfast buffet!

This hotel is stunningly gorgeous. The lobby has a giant table dead center and the floral displays change weekly. They reflect the changing seasons or local activities (the US Open or UN General Assembly Week) It's just a fabulous way to be welcomed. And it works.

JW Marriott Essex House New York is located right across Central Park. This was perfect for my morning runs. The hotel has luxury products and its rooms are spacious and comfortable. Make sure you don't lock yourself out of your room. Their security process is painful.

Grand OLD hotel (note the emphasis) that has many charms (including the outstanding Executive Lounge), but is in need of a refresh. IMO the cleanliness issues go beyond housekeeping and represent a need to refurbish carpets and bathrooms throughout the hotel. As far as Marriott's go in the US, this is one of the better properties given location and amenities but it could easily be the best property if it was cleaned up.

From the moment we checked in, Melvin was able to get an upgrade to a large room overlooking a courtyard. The room was spacious and very modern. The bathroom was small but well appointed.

The staff was helpful and engaging. We have great experiences in both the executive lounge, amazing food and drinks. Also in the Southgate restaurant, just for drinks.

The located in superb, close to the theater district and shopping, especially the time warner complex and across the street from central park.
