We have stayed at the John Rutledge House Inn several times and have always greatly enjoyed it. The house itself is beautiful, and the rooms are very tastefully decorated. Little touches like the fresh cut flowers on the tables and chocolates on the pillows at night are indicative of the Inn's attention to detail. What really makes the John Rutledge House stand out is the staff. They are all incredibly friendly, courteous, and are there to make sure you have a wonderful time in Charleston. My personal thanks to the concierge staff -- Jim, Margo, and Aaron -- you made our most recent visit absolutely perfect!

My wife and I stayed here for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. The accommodations were fantastic and the service was great. Complimentary tea time with cream sherry and brandy was a sweet treat. I would highly recommend them!

Really enjoyed my stay here. Beautiful historic house built by one of the signers of the US Constitution -- literally a founding father. Annie was our helpful sherpa to the local scene to whom we are grateful for her cheerful guidance. Walking distance to the market and other major features. Took advantage of their package to visit a local plantation, informative carriage ride through town, and tour through another local historic building. Well worth it. I hope Hurricane Florence did no damage to this beautiful building or the very charming town of Charleston.

John Rutledge House Inn sets the standards of true Southern Hospitality. If you re considering other inns/hotels look no further and stay here. The staff is responsive, incredibly kind and truly happy to be there. They take care of their guests so you really have a vacation.
The afternoon tea with light appetizers is delightful. The breakfast is fabulous. Wonderful diverse selections (appealing to even a finicky 8 year old s palate) of breakfast items made to order.
Jim, Margo, Elizabeth, Harry & Maurice were working during our stay and are rockstars.
They take pride in their service. The Inn, the room, the courtyard - the whole place is well cared for and clean. Absolutely pet and kid friendly. Walking distance to everything Charleston has to offer. Book now!!!

The amenities and services were truly representative of Southern hospitality...the made to order breakfast, afternoon tea and evening aperitifs were lovely touches, and the service so warm, pleasant courteous and efficient. I've never felt so special, or had such an enjoyable experience!

Stayed with family 7/8 - 7/11/18. Nice place, excellent staff, kid friendly. Ate at Circa 1886 also. Would recommend, right in the heart of old Charleston, all the best building within walking distance.

This was our first time at a bed and breakfast and it was very enjoyable to say the least. Special thanks to Margo, Harry (I think that s his name), Maurice and Elizabeth. These indivuals were very instrumental in making our stay enjoyable. They even surprised my wife for her birthday with a bottle of wine.

A wonderful vacation experience. The staff was welcoming, freindly and at all times helpful from the time we thought about booking a room through our departure. The carriage house room was lovely, comfortable and relaxing. This is a trip I won't forget and this Inn is a significant reason why.

We stayed here for one night on Aug. 2 and it was a fantastic experience! We were greeted at the front desk by a lady who provided exceptional service and was prepared for us. She greeted me by name. Our luggage was carried to our room. The room was gorgeous and spotless! The bed was very comfortable the shower head was amazing. Breakfast was one of our best meals of the entire trip so far. To stay in a beautiful home with such historical significance made for a wonderful stay.

Stayed in the carriage house for honeymoon in 1994. Maybe again in '96 (memory fades). Very comfortable, service was excellent. Loved the breakfast in bed. Location is great, easy walk to everything you'll want to see in Charleston's historic district. Chose this B&b based on Frommers review as the best in Charleston. Since then we've stayed in a lot of other b&bs and I can say I agree with Mr Frommer.

When I stayed here a few years ago, the great service we received was very impressive, so I thought I should finally give them a review.

We had actually booked a room in the old stable house but because they had a cancellation they upgraded us for free to the John Rutledge room. That was spectacular. The staff was very nice and helpful. The room were very clean and comfortable and the house was within walking distance of everything in downtown.

Today I am a Charleston Tour Guide. I love taking my customers by the John Rutledge house and talking about the history now too. If you wish to be close to the downtown historical area and stay in a beautiful bed and breakfast I highly recommend this one.

When i take my time to visit a place for information and go in to see what they have to offer and amenities and the concierge does not have time to give me this information and i am told told i can get it off their web site, i am not very impressed / My wife and i travel extensively and are able to pic and choose anything we like, i am an humble person but do not like it when some one in a position acts this way. we were not even offered a chance to view a room etc !

Margo is absolutely amazing!! You don t come across people like her everyday! You can tell she loves what she does! Made my anniversary not only special, with touches of champagne and chocolates, but memorable because of her enthusiasm, wit, charm, humor, and hospitality! She is the reason we will be back!!

Absolutely fantastic bed & breakfast in a historic building located in the heart of Charleston! My wife and I spent 2 nights and will undoubtedly return as guests. The Inn is in a great location on Broad Street which allowed an easy walk around historic downtown as well as a quick drive to other Charleston attractions and beaches. The service at the Inn was distinctly warm and personal. The concierge service (Margo, Margaret, Jim) was superb! Margo provided great insights into Charleston and recommendations on things to do and see. Most notably, she recommended and made reservations at two superb restaurants (Eli's Table and Circa 1886) and both restaurants were absolutely fantastic. The Inn met our every need. The delicious breakfasts were made to order and could be enjoyed on the patio, ballroom, or in your room. The Inn also provided beach towels, water, etc to support a quick trip to the beach. Definitely a 5 star establishment, we enjoyed all that the Inn offered and highly recommend it for a stay in Charleston!

Staying at the John Rutledge House Inn was the best part of our long Weekend in Charleston. Innkeeper Margaret and her staff treated us with amazing southern hospitality. They gave us fantastic ideas of what to do and where to eat. Our concierge, Margo, was especially kind and helpful. Our rooms were spacious, comfortable, and pristine. The Inn is walking distance from all the best sights and restaurants. Every time we returned to the Inn, we felt as though we were coming home, that's how wonderful it was to stay there. The breakfast cuisine was delicious and filling. We can't wait to return to the JRH Inn.

Although the carriage house was fantastic.. we were never told that we would not be staying in the main house... secondly, for the 3 night $1000 stay the happy hour appetizers were terrible .. the selection and quality.. the breakfast was average.. the staff was friendly ;)

Fine, but based on the other reviews, not really the level of service I was expecting, especially for the money. The house itself was fantastic, everything was spotless, and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Food service is where the wheels came off just a bit. There were never enough cups for afternoon tea, the water for tea was lukewarm, and the layout was just a bit slapdash. Breakfast was nothing special - fine, but that was it. There was an item missing from our breakfast both mornings, though it was replaced quickly.

I d honestly give this 4.3 stars if I could, but 5 weren t earned.

My husband and I had a wonderful stay here! We were celebrating our 'babymoon' and the staff treated us so special..we were upgraded to a beautiful room on the top floor which was amazing! Breakfast and especially tea time snacks were tasty..I was never hungry! My husband also took advantage of evening brandy..it was so nice to relax on the balcony each night. This place is definitely one of the nicest places i've stayed. And I'm so glad we chose to splurge here! Location is also wonderful..close to all the historic tours we did. Would definitely recommend for a special occasion!

A quick stay over Thanksgiving, the Rutledge House Inn has been a wonderful experience. The staff are exceptional and friendly and the amenities for being a B&B are plentiful, from delicious breakfast to afternoon tea. We stayed in the Carriage House building. The room is well sized and equipped. The beds, which are memory foam, are comfortable. There were plenty of outlets to plug in devices to charge. The fridge stocked with bottles of water was a nice touch as well.

The house is everything you would expect from a beautiful historical house. But, what makes this place really special is the staff. They treat you like a VIP as if you're the only guest staying at the property.

From the moment we arrive for Christmas week vacation we were impressed by the enthusiastic greeting from Margo, the afternoon/evening concierge. She and the rest of the staff were very attentive and did a wonderful job of pointing us the right directions. Our room on the second floor one of the rear Carriage Houses was everything we had asked for when I made the reservation with Jim (dayside concierge) ... nice and quiet overlooking the beautiful brick Courtyard. We loved watching the sunset on the second floor balcony of the main Inn while sipping cordials and nibbling on hors d'oeuvres, both compliments of the house. The included breakfast menu was offered a nice variety of options along with delicious daily specials. We would most certainly stay here again on a future visit to Charleston.

We stayed at the John Rutledge House for a few days. I really wish I could give a better review but for $450 a night we expected way more than what this property offered. First I will say that Margo and Jim the concierge were helpful and friendly. Although Margo did steer us in a very wrong direction for dinner one night at Eli's table. It was really bad. Not sure if there is a kick back for recommending this place, but it was empty every night. The flowers in the property were very pretty. Our room was large and the bed was comfortable but the furniture in our room and in the common areas were old and stained. The bathroom was nice but the glass door was covered with soap scum at the bottom. Historic does not have to mean dirty. The way they serve breakfast is odd but no big deal so we thought. Our breakfast was served ice cold each day. The oatmeal was bland and had no accompaniment like raisins or brown sugar. French toast was served ice-cold, shrimp and grits was probably the worst I had and it too served ice-cold as was the sausage and bacon. The sheets on our bed were paper thin and I could see the Tempur-Pedic name of the mattress through the bottom sheets. My sheet had a hole in it. When I lay down to go to sleep I noticed that the table in between our beds was literally covered with dust. We noticed on the day before we were to leave that the food rating for the property was only a C as it is displayed in the vestibule. A C rating means Needs Significant Improvement. We checked the South Carolina food Service website to see if this was possibly an old rating and we noticed that at the beginning of April they had a B rating and two days before we arrived it dropped to a C rating status. That was extremely disconcerting. My friend and I travel extensively and have stayed in a few bed and breakfasts and this is one of the most disappointing stays I have ever had especially for the price we paid.

My husband and I chose to stay here for our very first wedding anniversary. Jim the concierge was super amazing and extremely helpful our whole stay. The staff here really go above and beyond to make your stay perfect. We stayed in the Thomas Lynch room which has a beautiful view of a cathedral Church as well as the courtyard. The rooms are extremely clean and provide a historical ambiance. The breakfast that is provided is not only delicious, but the presentation is top notch. This bed and breakfast also offers tea time with hors d'oeuvres in the afternoon and a brandy and port wine in the evening which is all complimentary. The Rutledge in is just a few blocks from the market as well as a few blocks from rainbow row and the waterfront.it is also right around the corner from some of the best restaurants in Charleston. We highly highly recommend!!!!

As a young couple experiencing Charleston for the first time, we lucked out to discover the John Rutledge House. Not only was the house incredible, the service was fantastic! Concierge service does not get better than what Mike Jackson and Jim O Neill provide.

The room we stayed in was awesome - it tastefully blended period elements of the home's bones with modern amenities, and just felt peaceful and tranquil. After a great night's sleep, we met other amazing couples down for breakfast and were treated to a world class breakfast and a great cup of coffee.

We had such a great experience on our first trip, we will definitely come back to Charleston with other couples in tow.

To sum it up: Historic. Cultured. Southern Charm.

Beautiful, historic Inn with fantastic service. The staff is extremely nice and will be there for all your needs. This can be family friendly or a romantic stay - depending on your room choice. We were in room 8 which included a beautiful fireplace, temperpedic king bed, bluetooth radio, beautiful views. We will definitely be back.

Words cannot describe how incredible it was to stay here! If you are seeking out the full experience of southern hospitality, you will not be disappointed. The staff was fantastic; willing to go out of their way to make our stay memorable and stress-free. It was our first time here, but definitely not our last!

Loved it! I was a little skeptical of the B& B component, but this was truly fantastic! the staff was awesome to a person! The rooms were nicer than most hotels, from the Tempurpedic bed and pillow to the chocolate turn down service, just great.

One thing I have say is the breakfast was not like most of the included free breakfasts I've had over the year, it was a made to order breakfast (you place your order the night before) and was fantastic!

I can't go back!

The John Rutledge House Inn is a beautiful and historic hotel directly in the middle of Charleston on Broad Street. Everything is within walking distance and everything is convenient to the location. You can feel the history and atmosphere throughout the property. I have always enjoyed my visits here and have a special feeling every time I come here. This hotel is awesome.

Good location, friendly hosts. Tempurpedic beds very comfortable and loved that Maurice brought breakfast to our room. What a treat!

As a former Charleston resident, it's always a bit disorienting to return as a visitor. On a recent business trip, I had the pleasure of staying in one of the carriage houses. From the moment I walked in the door, Annie made me feel completely welcome and like I was the only guest at the Inn. She even brought my D'Allesandro's pizza delivery to my door later that evening! I wish I could have stayed longer and soaked up the genuine hospitality. Thanks for an amazing stay!
