My husband and I visited on Saturday (12/22/18). Small place, but very nice and personal. Tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. My husband knew more about what was being said, while learning things that he didn't know. I used the Groupon app without any problems. I also enjoyed the female bartender. She was very friendly, she also was able to offer information about the process. This was something that was low key and different to do. Great job!

There is currently a Groupon for a tour & flight of whiskey/rum that is an excellent deal! It s what prompted us to stop in for our 1st visit this past Sat night. After enjoying the flights & several cocktails, we ll most definitely be back! For $6-$8, it s a great deal regardless of the Groupon. The gentlemen behind the bar were very friendly, as was the older gentleman that gave us the tour of the small but mighty distillery. Highly recommend supporting this local gem.
This wasn't easy to find and when we did find it we weren't sure about it but we were there and had a groupon so we went it. It's not a large establishment but they're efficent. We got a quick rundown of their 4 items plus the 2 specialty bottles they had. Our groupon allotted 3 tastings. My first tasting was their specialty which was an apple flavor. It didn't have much an apple taste. I wasn't expecting an overwhelming apple taste but I just wanted a hint of apple which I didn't get but it was still a good taste. My second tasting was the Independent Barrel Aged Rum. I liked this one. This was a stronger taste but smooth at the same time. My third tasting was the Hellbender Bourbon. This was my favorite. It was strong but smooth. When you first sip it, it hit you but then as it goes down it was smoother. There was an optional tour that we opted out of. It had just been a long day. They offer a 3 tasting flight for $10 as well as specialty cocktails for sale.
I found a Groupon for a Tour and Tasting for two which included two flights of three of their core products. So finding the location is tricky because your GPS will more than likely bring you to a parking like which is mostly vacant depending on what time you arrive. But keep walking, because they re located on the side of the building; usually have some white Christmas lights with a sign out front letting you know to come right in! The distillery itself is small but super cute and personable! You re warmly greeted as soon as you walk in! The flights pretty much come in plastic shot glasses, which is enough to sample their products. They also offer drinks at a fairly reasonable price of $6. The guys are very knowledgeable of their drinks and the tour was very informational. Definitely recommend for a cute date idea!
My friends and I met for a tasting at Independent Distilling Company one evening. This place is a little hidden gem. The serving space is small and intimate. I really enjoyed speaking with Michael and learning about the work that goes into making their spirits. Holly was an awesome mixologist. She would ask out of the box questions to help you arrive at the perfect cocktail. I would definitely return for the great company and ambiance!
I first visited this distillery back in Sept 2017 and loved it very much. I visited again with some friends who I wanted to expereince this place July 2019. The owners were just as friendly now as they were then and very knowledgeableable about the whole process. They gave a wonderful tour of how the spirits were made and how the barrels contribute to the process. The cocktails and drinks are reasonably priced starting at $6 and are artistically made(umbrellas) depending on what kind you get. They also have their core products available to buy auch as rum, whiskey and bourbon. Definietly a place well worth the visit.
My wife and I met another couple for a distillery tour that was purchased through Groupon. Any previous issues with honoring Groupons seemed to be fixed as several other couples in our group redeemed the vouchers as well. Walk in tours on this Saturday were 2-5p and our touring group numbered around 20 people.
This distillery is in the rear of the Blue Tarp Brewery and the entrance is the last small door in the back corner. On this fall day, the owner had the large garage doors open but directed us to the smaller door to check in. There was adequate parking and a slate board with signage for the distillery atop a barrel outside the door.
This being a small, new, and independent brewery, it is a short walk through two rooms. But the 45 minute tour is very informative and lively. The guide, who is one of the partners owners, is funny and willing to answer any question thrown at him.
After the walking tour through the distillery, we returned to the small room where we checked in. A professional whiskey server helped us through the sampling process of the distilleries 3 spirits. If straight spirits are a bit tough, a mixer is offered. In my armature opinion, the rum is softer and easier to drink than popular brands. The bourbon had an extremely strong punch of earthy nitrogen which some whiskey fans really likes but non whisky drinkers felt was too strong. My favorite is the corn whisky with sweet corn and easy to drink qualities.
As part of our Groupon, we received a 750ml bottle of one of the three spirits. I'm not sure if it is included in the straight purchased tour.
Overall, this was a fun way to spend an hour or so in Decatur and support a local business. We didn't find anything negative or in need of improving.
Bought a Groupon, after reading all the amazing reviews, and left very disappointed. My Groupon code did not work and the tour guide did not know what steps to do follow up and I followed up with Groupon and all they were willing to do was offer a Groupon credit. What frustrated me the most was that I called twice and spoke with the owner letting him know Saturday's were tough because of work but I ended up taking yesterday off for their Groupon to not work.
A friend and I got here around 45 minutes before closing. We're both very into bourbon and were excited to find a distillery while on a trip from Florida. We walked in and were the only ones there, which seemed great at first, but the one employee on hand had no desire to tell us anything about the place. We got a flight and several cocktails (all of which tasted great) but the service tainted everything. Usually they are happy to tell you about the process and their history when you show up to a place like this but we got the silent treatment. Not sure we'd come back, but the $6 cocktails were excellent.
Went on the tasting tour yesterday. The production rooms are only about the size of a largeish car garage and everything happens right there, from the making of the mash to distilling to aging to bottling. It's a very small option but their product is very good and has a unique flavor. I'd highly recommend anyone, a whiskey drinker or not, go on the tour, you'll enjoy it.
I found this place on Groupon and for 8 bucks I got Core products include Hellbender Bourbon, Hellbender Corn Whiskey, Independent White Rum, or Independent Barrel Aged Rum. 2 flights of 3 of the core products. The staff was very helpful, friendly, and entertaining.
Really amazing local distillery, highly recommend stopping in, chatting with the owners and purchasing a few bottles. Their American dry gin is fruity and delicious, a delightful play on London dry gin
We got a Group On and went on date night. Super cool place and owners. Great drinks and awesome distillery tour. I love the Hellbender whiskey. We will definitely be back. Better quality, atmosphere, and pricing than a regular bar.
Interesting and informative tour. We arrived at 4pm so, we had a private tour and it was great! The souvenir bottle is large, no skimpy whiskeys here. The rum is really good and we enjoyed sampling all of their products. We purchased two bottles of the wheat whiskey; you don't want to run out of that in your home bar..YUM! Thanks for a good time guys!
