Want an adult drink and great Mexican-American style burritos, this is the place. Light on the wallet, real down to earth feel. Friendly and prompt staff. Eat inside or patio outside, for Pearl Street people watching.
This quintessentialy local boulder restaurant is a great place to get an inexpensive meal. Its late hours all week make it a great goto when everything else has closed. The bar is also usualy less overrun by college mobs than many other bars on pearl. The array of stickers on the wall atest to how ingrained Petes is in the fabric of this area.
This place is just like Chipotle except way, way, WAY better! It is essentially the same concept - Mexican restaurant where one orders burritos, quesadillas, or tacos selecting ingredients down the line, only the ingredients are far superior. Actually, once you eat here, you will feel sad next time you go to Chipotle (or Baja Fresh or Qdoba...) because it will never be the same. Illegal Pete's is just that good! Bottom Line: Pete's has high-quality ingredients served fresh. And the people working behind the counter were friendly and very competent! It is a highly recommended place to stop for lunch in Boulder.
P.S. What is the Mexican food that parrots love to eat?
...SQUAWK-amole!
A great local alternative to the fast food chain stores. Best fish tacos in Boulder and a quality beer selection to match.
Great local establishment. I tried the potato s instead of the rice on a vegan burrito and have been thinking about it ever since.
Greatest staff around! Good happy hour deals and of course great burritos.
Food is as good as always and they now have expanded seating outdoors due to Covid.
All my friends told me I "had to try illegal pete's." The line was out the door, which was about a 20 minute wait to get to the front. Once at the front, while wearing gloves, the worker told me to wait and went to the back to move a broom that had fallen. He then proceeded to make my burrito without changing his gloves.
Burrito was decent, but nothing special. Would've been better if it wasn't made with gloves that had touched a dirty broom from the floor.
If You re a CU Boulder student who wants a burrito. Go to this location after 7 and take advantage of free parking.
If you re a CU Boulder student who wants a bar to drink at, go to the one on the hill.
If you go to the one on the hill on the weekend and find it too crowded, this location is your answer. This one is focused on food on the weekends. The other one is a bar on the weekends.
It's like Chipotle but better. Fast, cheap, and delicious.
Love the chicken bowl. Queso is fantastic and the chips are always fresh. Good pork green chili. Great staff. Chill atmosphere.
They made me fish nachos. And sweet Lord on the name of the good baby Jesus those fish nachos were DANK. Thank you, Pete. And thank you fish.
The big fish burrito is the best thing I have ever crammed into my face.
Awesome spot. The prices are reasonable and the food is amazing. Fish burritos are the $4!7 !!
My favorite burrito place in town. There's generally a line at lunch time...and for good reason! Thankfully they manage to move people through at a good clip without compromising the quality of the food. Portions are good-sized and at reasonable prices. The interior has a bit of a grungy look that has a lot of character, there's a bar inside if you want to enjoy a beer with your food, and a small outdoor seating area.
Great burritos in downtown. For the best burrito in Boulder, go to Diaz farm taco truck
Great place to grab a drink and a quick bite. Bartenders are friendly and the fish tacos are great.
Very similar to Freebirds back in Austin. Good food, good vibes, good times!
I had been hesitant to try fish tacos for so long. They just didn't sound appealing to me. Finally was talked into trying these and they were delicious! I'm a fish taco convert now.
Flavor combos here are all great and prices are reasonable.
The place is relatively clean for the type of restaurant it is, and the bathrooms have always been in good, clean order.
Every time I have been, there has been a reasonable flow of patrons, but the waits are never excessive.
Burritos are great have naked burritos as well and music fair prices and big dishes for prices.
Always love the food. Cookies are great. However service is constantly sub-par. The first person in line (different person every day) always seems to have trouble getting brown rice and potatoes correct. And this time mocked me after I got annoyed for having to repeat those two for the third time.
This place takes all the good things about Chipoltle's or Qdoba, adds a bunch of local charm, and delivers it with fantastic food at an affordable price. I'm not in Boulder often, but I'd certainly come back.
I LOVE Illegal Pete's! The food is always great. I get the fish burrito and am never disappointed. I also love the happy hour deal of getting free chips and salsa with a purchase from the bar. The margaritas are great!
The tacos were great. I Wes there around midnight on a tuesday. It was crowded and VERY loud. The table we sat at had a loose top that rocked back and forth if anyone leaned on it. The place seemed a little run down. I didn't drink so I can't comment on the bar other than that it was busy.
Better version of Qdoba, and Chipotle. Excellent food.
Burritos. Seriously. Like one time it was burritos, and then I came back and had another one. And they were good. They were good once and then they were good again later. And then even later they were still good.
Only been once, and I ate the breakfast...in addition to the small amount of egg in the "burrito", the bacon was really greasy...like really greasy. It was spooned out of a hotel pan and the spoon wasn't even slotted so guess where that grease ended up draining? Inside my burrito... Not my style. Probably won't eat breakfast here again, due to the portion size, I can get over the greasy bacon now that I know what I would be in for.
I've been a local for over 20 years, and this is one of my favorite affordable places to eat in downtown Boulder. I much prefer Illegal Pete's to Chipotle or Qdoba because the ingredients are higher quality and the food is more flavorful to me. I haven't had an experience I didn't like. I'm very grateful.
Used to love this place but seems like the quality is getting worse.
If they legalized marijuana, surely they can legalize Pete. Pete's offers rock bottom cheap food without compromising quality. This will match the grocery store price. Unbeatable.
I wish it was better but it's just okayyyy... however, the girl behind the counter was maybe flirting with me? which is super awesome! cos I'm ugly and she was cute!!! yay!
The big potato is killer. Don't plan on doing anything for a couple hours after. You'll just want to sleep.
Always great food and service. Always a wait too but worth it.
We stopped here while visiting from Ohio. Chipotle style place with a full bar and awesome vibe. Must be popular because the line was oit the door. I got a bowl with shredded beef which was excellent. I added the pork green chile which really kicked it up a notch. I liked all the ways you could customize your meal. Wishing we had these restaurants in Ohio!!
I love the food here. I come by every time I'm in Colorado. I wish we had them in Dallas.
Very good food, very reasonable prices, friendly staff.
Best veggie burrito in town. The bar is a really great place to dodge riff-raff.
Went here for drinks before a show at the Boulder Theatre. The liquor selection was wide and well priced, service was okay, and the massive burritos were very tempting. The restaurant was pretty dirty though. So if you're the kinda of person that gets bothered by sticky tables and litterings of paper towels everywhere on the ground...well just get it togo lol
Great food. I love how they mix up what you choose to 0ut in your burrito before wrapping it up!
Far superior to Qdoba or Chipotle, Illegal Pete's is the place to go if you want a huge, delicious burrito.
Sure, Chipotle started here and QDobas are everywhere...but this local shop is a much better burrito option. Watch as they mix the ingredients at the end, ensuring every bite is awesome!
Best burritos around. Waits are a little ridiculous sometimes
The Fish Taco Bowl was delicious! And the Margaritas only cost $4.
Excellent prices even while it's at the heart of the town. Helpful staff.
looks fresh and popular, but my experience (and the person I was with) did not enjoy the meal, especially the 2nd,3rd,4,th.....nth time we had to go to the bathroom afterwards. consider changing the name to "Montezuma's Revenge"
Any time I'm in Boulder I stop at here, best burritos and prices in town!
Love how they mix all the burrito ingredients before rolling.
