Great place to take the kids and unwind. We get the season pass every year. Most days there are field trips so if you want there to be less people go after 1pm when the schools have left. Zoo lights is another great time. This bird is my favorite. Looks like a dinosaur and can kill with it's claws. The blues on its face are incredible.

The zoo was big and very clean. There were a few misting stations and playgrounds. I didn't like that all the big exhibits had keeper talks at the same time 11am. The food was great and fair priced. Plenty of animals and a cute splash pad.
As a visitor I was shocked at how fantastic their reptile building is. Not usually a Zoo highlight for me but this was my family's favorite part of our Zoo experience. We also loved the free parking (unlike our Zoo at home) and the cheetahs! There was a lot of construction going on while we were there and a whole primate section in the middle of the zoo had no animals. I do think that this zoo has a lot of potential and we enjoyed ourselves regardless of a few empty areas.
So good to return to the Houston Zoo! It was so hot, but everyone was masked up and happy to be outdoors, gazing at the vast array of majestic animals. I can't wait to return when the weather cools down a bit.
Love bringing my kids here. Great exhibits and I like the demonstrations they do every once in a while. Only complaint is that you have to pay for kids that are 2 or 3. Usually those ages get in for free. Decent food options too.
The food and stuffed animals are very expensive but the animals were out today very fun and there's lots of interesting animal facts at every exhibit. The elephants were at their food baskets and that was super awesome! They were only a few feet away. Very cool.
Still a lot of construction going on here. Animals were sleeping or hiding mostly. I hope it gets better as they finish up. There's a great kid section so they can play and get wet and they have changing rooms but no restrooms in the immediate area.
As Zoos go for its size the Houston Zoo is very nice. The only down side is the food court is horrendously bad. But unlike other places you can bring in your own food with no hassle. So just make sure you pack in lunch. If you do have to eat at the zoo be prepared for no seating, expensive poor quality food and Disney like lines to get your hotdog. Time sink on busy days during lunch time is around to two hours in my experience.
A really cool zoo. We got some awesome video of the elephants dunking each other in the deep end of the pool. Looked like a we'll taken care of zoo. Highly recommend.
Always a great place to enjoy time with family and friends. The zoo lights exhibit was awesome. Seemed to be a tad bit expensive, but you want the experience, it's well worth it.
This is a great zoo with well-kept exhibits and many options for children's (and adults') learning and entertainment. Arrive early for prime parking. Get a reasonably-priced membership or buy your individual tickets online so you can bypass the long ticket lines. Make sure you check the times online the elephants get bathed and the times you can feed the giraffes. Many of the animals seem more active in the relative cooler mornings in the summer. If you have smaller kids, bring a wagon or stroller rather than renting those items from the zoo.
We love it there amazing animals amazing playgrounds my two kids have lots of fun we were members last year but this year we are still not sure they have free entry from 12 pm on the first Tuesday in every month but its so crowded unfortunately
Great for family. My 1yr loved the carousel. Unlimited carousel ride ticket was SO WORTH IT! Didn't even smell like most zoos. Parking was a little difficult but still worth the visit. Loaded fries were AMAZING!!
While they have updated the Zoo, and is very nice, I couldn't help nut feel guilty , most of the larger animals enclosures are really inadequate, very small and some of the big cats were really stressed. Not to be confused, they are well taken care of but these animals need more space to mimic their natural environment and simply the areas are just too small. But the entire place is very clean, the food is great and it's really very nice and we had a great day!
Pretty nice zoo two quite large groups of elephants and quite a few giraffes for a smaller zoo. Bonus points for a massive rhino. Covid concerns have caused them to have to blockade certain paths through the zoo that really hurts the flow through the zoo, some better signage or arrows on the ground might help.
If you plan to go on a light walk this probably won't be the place for you especially if you plan to get there at three or two pm because then you missed all the good events.
Nice place to spend a weekend with kids. Wish there were clearer signs to take optimum route to cover all zones as some places it gets confusing where to go next which wastes time. Cypress Cafe food was average and beverages were very expensive where just a glass of large Coke costed $7.50
Took my family in the evening time when it was not as hot and they had a blast. Especially my daughter. The animals however must have just ate because they were all sleep. All in all it was a great experince. We even got free tickets to get on the carousel
Houston zoo never disappoints. All the exhibits were open, the weather was great, most of the animals were up and going, and the zoo keeper talks were very interesting.
Houston zoo is always an enjoyable adventure. At the time of CoVid and social distancing they have done their best to maintain the zoo integrity and enjoyability at the same time.
One of the best zoos I've ever visited! Wide walkways, and loads of animals. Definitely wish we had showed up at 9am when they opened. We arrived around 10:30am and were there until close (4pm) and still didn't have enough time to see everything.
Highly Recommend!!!
*Bonus: First Tuesday of every month is free with ticket you can easily get on the Houston Zoo's website. I just opened my email with attached tickets and they scanned them at the gate.
Had a great time at the houston zoo.. lots to see and lots to do. Good food decent prices. Small piece of advice, not alot of parking arrive early to get decent spot.
I live around Houston and have been going to the zoo for almost 40yrs. We actually have to drive over an hour to get there. After the last trip, yesterday, I will be very hesitant to go again. Besides the lack of non-native animals (where were the sun bears and black bears? And where are all the herd animals?) the people (Visitors) were very rude. Some of us would like to see the animals that are available instead of waiting only to get to the glass and the animal having walked off because some people stand there for so long until the animal walks away. The cost is ridiculous and the parking/is sad. I thought there was going to be a fist fight for our spot. A woman got out of her car, she was the passenger, and followed us to our spot so she could protect it so they could park. That is sad. This complaint will go unheard because neither the city nor the zoo care. They only care about money, and if they fix the parking they can't charge money for the overflow parking. I would give this a -5 but it won't let me. Save your money.
Bit too hit to visit sometimes in the summer so you might want to go later in the day. Also I think some of the animals won't be out at noon due to heat maybe (during the summer), so maybe an afternoon visit would be better. Besides this pretty large zoo, well kept and maintained.
A trip on the weekend is fun for the family. It will take 3 hours to walk the whole thing. Plenty of shade and benches to sit and rest. It is a little tough to get parking on weekends so plan to arrive before 11 or so. You can also walk or bike around the Hermann park from here.
It's a small zoo but love how organized and clean it is. They are constantly expanding. The next upcoming animals are local - Texas! Can't wait! If you get a chance to see the houston zoo lights, it's a lovely walk in the zoo.
We go every few years and it wad awesome this time. They have added many new things. My only complaint is the parking. They need to hire people to track parking in lots.
The many school buses make park6a living hell! The zoo is great but the school groups take over everything during the weekdays. Try to take young children there is really a living hell. School groups, many unsupervised, swarm on everything. The splash pad is overrun by big kids. My toddler was knocked down by a 14 year old. Trying to get in and out of the parking lot behind dozens and dozens of school buses who must load up and unload while you wait behind them in your car with bored and angry toddlers is a nightmare. They need to come up with a better system for the buses.
This was an amazing zoo! Excellent conditions for the animals and their visitors. Just be warned to collect a map when you enter as I got lost a few times.
The zoo is very nice although a little small for the size of Houston. This is a great family friendly location with plenty of exhibits for kids. There is a playground by the petting zoo. If you have kids, this is a must see in Houston.
Went for the zoo lights didn't like it much way to crowded. However the regular zoo is beautiful and a great place. Very popular one of the best zoos in the country
