Stayed here for our first visit to Puerto Rico- the hotel was fantastic. Whole building and grounds are lovely, our room (216) was incredible with super high ceilings and a private balcony. Ate breakfast there twice and it was very good. Excellent location right in the heart of Old San Juan. All the staff were also terrific.

The location of this beautiful hotel is excellent but it did not impress me as a 4 o 5 stars category. Although my stay was pleasant this are the things I thought failed me during my 6 days stay. Since day one, the phone was not working at all. I called daily to have fix it but during my entire stay I had no phone in my room. Second, the hot water was boiling but the cold water was also very hot , making our bath a horrible burning experience. It was never fixed. Third, the bed was very uncomfortable to me. I waked up early with a sore back and sore hips and was never able to reconcile my sleep. Four, I have traveled extensible and this has been the only hotel that the"breakfast included" was not such thing but a voucher for $20 USD to use at the restaurant. Very misleading to the "Breakfast included" add. And finally the air conditioner had a constant intensity of 71 degrees , making the room a freezer, especially at night. The thermostat was never fixed. Employees were courteous and the Pina Coladas were great. I hope they can fine tune these problems. I was in room # 518 fron November 19 to the 25. Sincerely, Joseph de la Torre

Furniture and interiors are dated. Cleanliness could be improved. It is misleading that this hotel is part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World brand.

The patio and common areas are better than the rooms.

Absolutely gorgeous. It s in the heart of San Juan. It s a converted convent. There is an open air bar in the center of the lobby. I went to a wedding there and the room was left me breathless.

Excellent location ! Good accommodations. Free wine and cheese everyday at 6pm. Excellent housekeeping staff. Really enjoyed our stay and I would have rated them 5 stars, except for what happened on the last day. I had prepaid for the hotel months in advance, but there was an invoice for the entire amount under the door when we got up. I went to front desk to find out what was up. I was told that I would have to wait until 7am when a Supervisor would arrive. The issue was eventually cleared up as a new system / software problem. I doubt if we will ever stay at the el Convento again, because of this issue. If you decide to try, make sure to bring a hard copy of your payment. That is what saved me having to pay Double
Visitors beware. But the Location is Great !

Unbelievably cool historical hotel.

Unbelievably cool historical hotel.

Fully modernized without sacrificing the classic feel. They were running a little behind when we tried to check in at 3, so they gave us free sangria coupons to enjoy in the patio. The drinks were superb and the patio a nice little spot to relax in the shade after walking around all day. We got room 512, which had a nice view of the port side of San Juan. The room was clean, the bed comfortable, and they have added modern doors inside of the historic ones to dampen the noise and contain the AC (which worked wonderfully). At 6pm we got free cheese and wine, and at 630 we went to the heated pool to watch a cloudy sunset. The room was quiet and we slept well.

The staff here was exceptionally friendly and helpful. Makes sense why Conde Nast rated this place so well, and why it's on the "Small Luxury Hotels Of The World" list.

A hidden gem in San Juan! The hotel staff offers an upscale experience complete with a bell hop and turn-down service. Not to mention the building is full of rich history that makes this hotel experience truly a memorable one. I'd come again if given the chance!

This is simply the best place to stay in Viejo San Juan. Great service, great food, excellent location. Rooms are very precious. They are decorated in a very traditional way and the views are amazing. They offer complimentary wine and cheese and it was offered for at least an hour or longer with grapes, apples, pears... simply amazing. They went beyond the line of duty to make us feel happy.

This is my second time here and the service is consistently professional. I would say as good as the Ritz.

A page out of history. Situated in 500 year old Old San Juan. The rooms are elegant and comfortable. Our room had angled view of the Governor's Mansion. The staff is friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. We're already looking forward to our next visit!!

Here I spend my honeymoon. Large and spacious rooms, comfortable beds, large bathtubs. Upon leaving you have the Catholic Church next door that is a jewel of architecture, museums nearby, the Fortress and the Mayor of the city of San Juan.

So much history in one place. Definitely didn't expect the service to be at this level, especially considering the afforable price.
The hotel is a masterpiece. Everything is fully restored considering it's been a year since hurricane Maria hit.
Small gestures here and there make you feel at home. Happy hour every day from 6 to 7 with free wine, cheese and crackers.
Fruit, tea, coffee and water available for free 24/7.
Every day at 7pm someone passes by to leave a welcoming note and two pieces of chocolate.
There's a rooftop pool and a jacuzzi on the 4th floor.
There's a terrase where you can sunbathe. They also grow all types of plants and fruit on the terrace that they use in the kitchen.
The location is in the heart of viejo San Juan, you're steps away from restaurants, bars, shopping and the shore.
Couldn't be happier we stumbled across this hotel, definitely coming back.

My stay was wonderful. I stayed during the Thanksgiving weekend, and the staff was extremely welcoming and helpful. The room was very clean and the service was great. The bar was wonderful and the two bartenders Dori and Carol were the best. It was a great mini-vacation and I would definitely do it again.

Would rate a 5 Star but be warned about the "Bay View" rooms. I paid extra for the "Bay View" and Room 401 - looks out onto the courtyard they have their evening receptions in and a couple of buildings across the street. No Bay views from that room and the only bay view you could get was from the pool deck.

Staff was great, the Tapas bar food was great, and it is in a great location. But, I would recommend staying in one of the rooms without paying for a view that doesn't exist.

I made a non-refundable reservation and was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. My reservation was for a room from 10/31-11/1. I requested the cancellation on 10/8 which gives them ample time to replace the room with another reservation. After making several attempts, over a 48 hour period, to speak with a reservation s manager, I spoke with the senior reservation specialist who refused to refund my $271 room. Her reason was that she receives many excuses from other customers with lies about illnesses and deaths in the family. I am providing her with my doctor s note to prove that I am sick, but am extremely disappointed that I m dealing with this drama during a challenging time in my life. Through many tears and sadness, I have been trying to get this room cancelled for 2 days.

Only came here for lunch, but boy is it a beautiful haven in the center of Old San Juan! Had lunch in a restaurant situated in the middle of a courtyard with lush greenery and flowers: El Convento feels like a place in the olden times, with authentic Mediterranean architecture. The hotel was actually kept almost identical to the building that served as a church in the 1500's, with gorgeous artwork by Antonio Martorelli. The waitstaff is accommodating and the food is delicious too!

We were so glad we picked this gem for our Honeymoon! Such lovely staff that helped us each day and gorgeous antique details. The wine and cheese every night was such a great treat! The bed was also so comfy. We also had beach access one short ride away at a sister hotel which was also lovely. We hope to come back soon!

I have not stayed here as a guest, but I live nearby. Anybody who visits Old San Juan and does not go inside El Convento to enjoy the courtyard has missed a treasure. Simply gorgeous. And the bar in the courtyard makes a wonderful mojito.

To get started; It has free Wi-Fi, both at the reception, in the courtyard and in the rooms. The patio area is a very nice place and has a bar with a bar and separate tables with umbrellas where you can very pleasantly drink some very rich local beers and have a nice chat. Outside the hotel you have a park where you can see the beauty of old San Juan. Within walking distance is the gates to Old San Juan and the beautiful Wall! There is a Church very close to the hotel, souvenir shops and very rich restaurants! A very good place to hodpedarte if you want to know San Juan, Puerto Rico.
