We did the Shanghai Underground tour and it was awesome. Very educational and interesting. It's amazing that Portland built their present city over the old one and tried to just bury it and pretend it never happened. We learned such amazing and rich history of the city in it's early days and how rough and scary of a place it really was. If you're ever in Portland I highly recommend you take the time to experience this tour. I do have pictures but I can not post them or use them without permission of the Shanghai Underground Tour people.

Very laid-back, old time feel. Cozy, Victorian lounge; Antique furniture pieces and dim lighting.

The pianist was great, played more of a jazz style than a party piano bar (at least on the Sunday eve of Labor Day weekend, maybe Friday and Saturday nights are different).

Ok cocktails, friendly and fast service, the happy hour apps we had ($1 oyster shooters, $4 taster fried calamari ) were solid but not especially mind-blowing.

Overall This was an AWESOME and totally memorable dive experience for us and our wedding party friends, so it's a 5 star novelty experience in my book, but I give it 4 stars for the Average-ish food and cocktails.

This place hasn't changed much in the last 20 years. While it still has its charm, the food menu is quite dated. Food quality of the lounge menu, has suffered with more frozen meats used and chef mic ( microwave ) being used more often. Still it seems to do ok. Stay away from the chicken strips as they are frozen and tasteless. The dinner menu is decent, but when you pay $20.00 for a dinner, I expect at least a hand tossed salad, rather than a bagged iceberg salad to accompany my dinner.

While waiting for the Shanghai Tunnel tour to begin,I found the staff, service, and food at Hobo's just wonderful. We got there in time for happy hour and we ordered sliders, pizza and a beef mushroom dish. the mushroom dish was so good my daughter didn't even share with the rest of us. All that for under 20.00. Loved the place. Will go back the next time I'm in Portland

Terrific! So glad we had time to kill waiting for the Shanghai Underground tour and decided to eat here. Fabulous steak tips, fish tacos, chicken pizza and the sliders! And Happy Hour made all this under $20.00! Woo-hoo

We had an excellent experience at Hobo's. The food was delicious and the portions generous. Our server Brice made the night with great service and even a few suggestions for local stops for our trip.

The staff here are such a riot! Welcoming, funny, and totally laid back. The building and decor make for a cozy establishment, but the staff are what make this place cool. If Hobo's has a shtick, it's making you glad you came in.

Great food. Everything was so fresh and favor-filled that me and my friends tried. We only had appetizer but I am sure entrees would have been great also. If you are hanging out downtown Portland this is a great place to check out.

Just recieved the WORST service ever. My friend and I were standing at the bar for a good 15 minutes and were not acknowledged once by a bar tender. When other people came to the counter they were serived right away. I even said excuse me to this man who must have been a bus boy and right away he was like "no i dont make drinks" instead of getting someone else to help me or even being like "how can i help you" i don't know what the hell was going on, nothing like that has ever happened to me before any other place. 2 thumbs down

The nachos from the bar menu is good! But stay for a cocktail! They have a full dinner menu, I've only had the chicken it was ok, but I'll stick to the nachos. On certain nights they have a guy there playing the piano.

Delicious. The happy hour food specials are generous, to say the least. Impressive for the price. Great vibe and interior decor. Knowledgeable bartenders (Jared is awesome!) are good at chatting about anything while recommending quality booze.

The history of the building is neat as well, and we took the Shanghai tunnel tour that meets in the lobby. If you're a history buff or interested in Portland eclectic stuff, really neat.

I liked the casual style to the place. The food was good. I had the prime rib sandwhich. The meat had a few tough spots but the flavor was good and the price was right. The service was quick and staff friendly. Would go here again.

I'm always pleasantly surprised by how good the food is here. I had their beef Wellington, which I hadn't had in years, and it was delicious. But the real treat here is the ambiance of the place. From the music from the piano to the warmth of the fireplace, there are few bars like this left. I am so glad we still have this one!

slow service and no refills. They were out of scallops so I got the steak. My husband asked for blue cheese crumbles melted on his. Mine came out with it too. Frozen "seasonal" veggies that are not in season in mid September. Creme burlee is essentially vanilla pudding. No vanilla bean and very small.

Steak was cooked well.

In many ways, Hobo's is much more than a gay-owned restaurant. To me it's an important gay Portland landmark at a time when they are starting to disappear. There is Darcell's just north. One wonders how long that place will last. Hobo's is rumored to close for over a year now. That's worrisome because after Starkey's closed, gay places that really are gay are diminishing. Cadillac remains. Anyway, I have been coming to Hobos since 1994. The food stays remarkably consistent. I had a French dip about two weeks ago. It was meh, but that's OK. A few nights ago I had a filet and scallop entree that I might only find at Morton's or Ruth's Chris or some restaurant in Seattle, S.F. or L.A. Yes, that good and at a price that is way affordable. I never want this place to close. I wish ownership all of the best luck in keeping the doors open.

Dinner was wonderful! But the Creme Brule was outstanding. I loved the live music. And my drinks were stiff !!Thank you ! I recommend coming here for a relaxed dinner.. and they've got the Shanghai Tourist thing going on so when your feeling spunky enough to go down to the spooky Shanghai tunnels.. it's literally right there. So check it out

I stopped in here while I waited for my shanghai tunnel tour and had a drink. The bar itself is kind of cool but ultimately it doesn't quiet come together for me. The bar area was cool and the drinks were good, but the hillbilly music playing didn't quite fit the vibe of the place. I think if they dimmed the lights 30% and turned off the country music it would be a better consumer experience. Just my opinion.

It has a very cozy and fun atmosphere. Great drinks and excelent service. Though some of the food offerings are certainly interesting, the ingredients are not the best quality considering the prices they charge.
