Love the bartenders here. They are so fun and hilarious. This place definitely has a lot of regulars and its just a nice quiet place. Weekend evenings are when it gets pretty loud with a DJ who comes in.
People think it's a gay bar just based on the majority of the patrons you see and the bartenders but it's just very gay friendly! Not that it matters either way.

A group of us went here after work for happy hour. We were the only ones in the restaurant. We took a seat and had to wait 20 min to get a drink over in. The place is also in a really sketchy part of town. I don't feel safe walking around there at night.

I am traveling to Portland and visited Hobos with work colleagues early in the evening around 5. I was surprised at how empty the place was, we were the only people in the non smoking area. Service was fairly attentive and I started with a glass of the Pinot Noir which was excellent. I also ordered the fried shrimp which was quite nice.

Yes of course it'll be one of the best rooftops when it's one of the only, but if you are coming for service don't expect it to be quick. Luckily there are many pretty objects to look at while you're being ignored by the bartender. Casually an hour will pass by and you realize you still don't have a drink. Enjoy the wait.

Admittedly I am biased as I have been going to Hobo's for probably 25 years now. Usually once a week together with friends for cocktails and conversation. I enjoy the atmosphere and the staff there. No I do not eat there often but on the occasions when I have had a meal or hors d'oeuvres they have always been quite tasty. It is a friendly gathering place whether you are gay or straight.

It's just the last standing gay restaurant left in Portland. A staple in the community. I have been coming here at least once a week and trust me, it's not for the service, which can be lacking at times. It's for the atmosphere, the people and Jim playing the piano. The food is really not bad. Not gourmet but not just bar food either. $5 burger Mondays. Daily specials. I just wish they came with a salad.

They use to be a quiet and nice refuge from the loud downtown party hours, but now they are trying to have their hand in that too and match the drunktastic energy around the late night entertainment district, which is a turn off. No longer the dependable sanctuary.

My experience at Hobo's this Sunday during Pride was one of the worst dining and service experiences I have ever had. I was with 6 other people and we arrived at noon. The server, Dave, handed us the brunch special menus and told us that technically brunch was over but he had checked with the kitchen and they would still serve us some of the items on the brunch menu. Then he offered us the lunch menu, which we said was fine and that we were fine ordering off either menu. So he snatched back all the brunch menus and then handed out the lunch menu.

I also need to point out that the place was nearly empty - I didn't see a single table of other people, although I think there might have been some people seated outside in the back. Dave the waiter seemed very annoyed with us just existing and constantly wandered off to do unknown other things. We ordered drinks, which arrived but not very promptly despite the lack of other customers. Once we ordered, he took down names and was polite about giving us separate checks as needed. Then we had to wait over an hour for our food. According to our server the kitchen also wasn't really ready to start serving lunch. At this point other people started coming in, I suspect the pride parade was over at this point, so people we ready to sit down to drink and eat. Somehow everyone that came in after us seemed to be served faster than we were. Despite being there for two hours we were only able to get 3 drinks because Dave never came back over to check on us and it was nearly impossible to get his attention.

We ordered two appetizers, which arrived about half an hour after we ordered them. I only ate the steak bites but I will say those were delicious. Then over an hour after we had ordered food, our actually meals began to arrive. These came out in completely random order and were so spaced out that some people finished eating before other people's dish had arrived. Two people's meals never came out, despite the length of time we were there. Three times food that we didn't order was brought and left on the table and I actually saw Dave take two of the plates back into the kitchen then turned around and walk back into the dining area to deliver the food to a different table. The person that got the third mis-delivered meal actually tried to keep the wrong order because he was so hungry he didn't really care what he ate at that point. He then had to wait even longer before receiving the most pathetic excuse for a french dip sandwich I have ever seen. The meat was totally dried out and the "hoagie" roll it was on looked like a hot dog bun to me. He ate a few bites before determining it was too gross to eat. He had also ordered a salad but was served fries instead.

Dave had us come to a register in the back where he finally actually split our bills so we could pay. Despite the bad service - we actually started talking at the table about how bad the service was, I still tipped him 18% out of habit, $5 on a $27 total. After I walked back to the table to gather with everyone to leave, a member of my party paying after me got treated to Dave complaining to her about how little I had tipped him despite him giving us "great" service. Regardless of how he felt that was just not acceptable behavior.

Had a great steak while sitting at the bar.mostly was older locals, I had gone because I read reviews that they had drag shows, but they don't anymore. The bartender was able to recommend some awesome drag shows nearby though

Generous servings of surprisingly delicious cuisine tonight. For 2 split the pear/apple/greens salad (huge), crab cakes and steak tips. Thought appetizers would be a small meal...nope, took most of the steak tips with us. Very tasty. Their red blend is a good wine choice too. Have enjoyed Hobos for over 35 years - glad to know it's still kicking!

First time at this location was during the Portland Pride Parade! Such a wonderful little location, Natalie was extremely helpful and friendly. Although it was a packed house we were cared for and attended to, I was also highly impressed my the deliciousness of the food. Can't wait to return at a future date to experience more on the menu. Thank you for being part of my first memorable Portland pride experience!

Good drinks with decent prices. Bar had kind of a locals only vibe when I went, but I went for ghost tours run by a different company. The back patio is amazing, so get your drink and head to the back to enjoy it.

Because we were going on the tunnels tour, it just made sense to get a bit there. The food was pretty good and so were the drinks. We were greeted by a very friendly bar tender and he helped us put a table together for the 5 of us. HOWEVER, the waiter was very rude and didn't seem all that interested in taking our order. My friend asked how big the portions were for the happy hour plates and he said " Well they are single servings, that's what happy hour food is , hun." That's word for word. What a condescending answer! He took forever with our food and didn't ask if we needed anything else, even though he clearly saw our cocktail we're gone. We finally flagged down the bar tender and he got us another round . When we left to line up for the tour, my friend and I immediately got on yelp and google to write our reviews on this horrible waiter. While scrolling through the other reviews, we saw a couple other people complained about this guy. So apparently either management doesn't care to read the reviews OR they don't care about how this guy is treating the customers! So all in all, it's a great place but if you see the waiter with a ponytail , go to a different section or sit at the bar!

This was an amazing discovery on a cold night. Saw it was open and walked in and amazed at great service, good beer and ordered cottage pie which was really good and tasty. I would recommend this place for great atmosphere also. Loved it.

It is easy to miss Hobo's. Really easy. Located in the middle of the bock just North of Burnside, I'd driven past it hundreds of times without knowing it was there or what it was.
It was only after being taken there by a friend that I'd crossed its doors, and I'm so glad I did.
The brick walled bar/restaurant is cozy, comfortable, and friendly. Surprisingly spacious, it's tiny street frontage hides a roomy and inviting space, with a volume level that allows for intimate conversation.
Hobo's would be a good place to start a night out in the Old Town entertainment area.
It's also notable that the place is very GBLT-friendly, but has a classier "feel" than some of the spots off Stark street.

I m only giving them 3 stars because the service was very slow. My filet and my salad were amazing!! I am not sure if they had some servers not show up or if they were unexpectedly busy but our waiter seemed frustrated and it felt like it took forever just to get a drink order in.

My husband and I went for dinner before going to see darcel's show for the first time. The service was friendly and fast, and our food was really good. I had the prime rib sandwich, which had a pretty big slice of prime rib. My husband had a burger and he said it was the best burger he's had in Portland. We like the space as well. Definitely recommend checking this place out. It's not a far walk from the Max light rail line either.

Nice centrally located bar/restaurant. The food is great. The Linguine with Clams is cooked perfectly. The prices are very reasonable for what you get. I am for sure going to go back.

Food was decent but definitely very over priced what we got. They were out of several things we ordered. Got the filet mignon which was $30 but didn't have mashed potatoes so they gave us fries instead which was a disappointing alternative to whipped garlic mashed potatoes. Service was good but slow. Overall, was an okay experience but we won't be back.

It's a decent joint for a beer. Only pedestrian cocktails. Good base liquor but the mixers are hit and miss. I didn't try their food so I won't comment on that. The most notable feature is that it's where the Portland Underground tour starts.

This is a great little place. When I went there was someone playing live piano music and it was awesome.. I'm not sure how regular that is. The ambiance and the overall vibes in the bar were relaxing and great. I could definitely imagine getting kidnapped here and put on a ship to work.

Want to chill, have a good cocktail, eat a great meal and relax? This is a great place to go. If your there and want to have some fun, entertaining conversation, then just belly up to the bar and grab a seat. The Bartenders are very pleasant and never short on some fun banter. The restuarant area is set up nicely for a date setting as well or even just to chill with some friends. Kick back and enjoy!

We came for the Shanghai Tunnel tour and decided to have our dinner here since it was where we needed to be. We made a good choice. Dinner was great and our waiter was so fun to work with. He made the whole experience totally worthwhile. We didn't get his name as he was too busy but we are definitely going back again.

Dear diary: today is my first day in Portland for the softball World Series. Me and my team decided to go to this "restaurant" to patronize a sponsor. Apparently this was a bad idea. It took nearly 10 minutes to take our drink order, another 15+to get the drinks and place our order, but some drinks still didn't arrive. Someone asked for a tall glass of water, and was told that there weren't enough cups in the "restaurant" to accommodate this request. Food took well over 40 minutes to arrive. Apparently they were out of mashed potatoes, and decided to put fries on the plate instead (without asking). Steaks showed up cold. The appetizers never arrived, but the server told us "they are on the way" after everyone was nearly done eating, to which we politely told him they were no longer needed. We were greeted with extreme attitude from this server (long hair in ponytail, Sunday 09/03/2017) - he literally had the audacity to say "is there anything ELSE I can remove from the check?!" As he dropped it off. I heard Portland is weird, I didn't realize that meant poor service from a supposedly "well-established" business. I need a drink after that experience.
