I always walk into a Powells looking for one thing in particular and leave with at least $200 worth of books and presents. Today was no exception, it seems that they put some books with several copies on sale to increase their movement speed!

I absolutely love this wonderful bookstore! It features all the latest in every genre as well as older favorites and the classics. My only regret is that there is no Powell Book Store in New York or New Jersey!!!

Personally my favorite book store but it has gone downhill with the amount of people going there and reading in the isles. Fast help from employees when its not too busy. A little spendy. I wish they would make the isles a little bigger so two people could fit side by side, and have a seperate reading area in the back and the front to help place people who are just standing in the way.

Even though it's one of the satellite stores, it's still one of the best book shops I've ever been to. There is a coffee shop attached that you can get to without going outside. Their table top games are a little overpriced but they have a good selection.

I loved this bookstore! This was my first visit and I look forward to many more visits. Awesome atmosphere, helpful staff and even other customers were really friendly. Plus I had a delicious iced fruit tea from their coffee shop and you can even get CBD added to your drinks!

Powell's Books on Hawthorne, what can I say that h...

Powell's Books on Hawthorne, what can I say that has not yet been said? This store has almost every book that anyone could ever want to read, but is "almost" good enough? I should think not. Is almost scoring the winning goal at The World Cup good enough? Is almost making it through a quadruple bipass good enough? Is almost getting the combination right going to get the safe open for the burglar? What about almost having an orgasm with the hottest girl in the store (who was in the back looking for a book on how to almost complete architectural design). We almost made love, which was almost the coolest thing that would have ever happened to me in a bookstore.
They almost have everything you could ever want to read at Powell's, but they do not carry BURY MY HEART UNDER THE BURNSIDE BRIDGE by local author N. SEVERIN MOODHE. Why don't they have that book? Why isn't there a large poster or a copy of this epic memoir sitting prominently in their front window? Why? If Powells on Hawthorne, or even Powell's Downtown is truly the home of the comprehensive collection of every book that ever mattered, they would proudly be stocked with enough copies of BURY MY HEART UNDER THE BURNSIDE BRIDGE! The smoking hot emo girl behind the counter would be gleefully singing it's praises to every Thomas, Richard, and Haroldine to pass within an earshot of her passionate vocal radius. People who have no idea what they should read should be picking up a copy of this book that they would then find impossible to put down and, trembling in anticipation, proceed to checkout tearfully declaring that finally they have found that one book that will fulfill their wildest literary desires. Christians, Muslims, Jews, and Athiests would eye each other, nodding in what could only be described as a feeling of infinite brotherhood in the knowledge that they finally found something that they could all agree upon. The employees at Powell's on Hawthorne would clock out after work and meet at The Lucky Lab to brag about how many plebians the had brought to the fountain of enlightenment with sales of BURY MY HEART UNDER THE BURNSIDE BRIDGE and congratulate themselves in the knowledge that they worked at the best bookstore in the entire world. If that weren't enough, Powell's executives would wake in the dead of night, stumble to their Macintosh laptops and stare at graphs and charts showing massive profits generated by one lone book that the guy who handles local authors had the wisdom to support by deciding to carry, that book being BURY MY HEART UNDER THE BURNSIDE BRIDGE. "Give that guy a raise, his own company luxury car, and bonus vacations to exotic lands with beaches, umbrellas, drinks of fine liquor, and a yacht anchored 50 yards off shore that they can swim out to under the moonlight", they would declare in memos sent back and forth. "Somebody pinch me, for I must be dreaming!"
And in Literature Heaven, Hemmingway, Vonnegut, Burroughs, Kesey, Kerouac, Twain, Shakespeare and God Almighty would sit around a fine mahogany table smoking pipes and declare BURY MY HEART UNDER THE BURNSIDE BRIDGE a timeless work of the human experience.
Powell's on Hawthorne is a fairly decent bookstore, but this shop will never be complete until they stock the memoir by N. Severin Moodhe. Powell's will almost be great, and almost just isn't good enough.

My favorite Powell's location due to it's convenient location on Hawthorne where I shop. This is a smaller location than the one on Burnside, so their selection isn't as diverse. A good place to browse for books though.

Hard to find things in this Powell's location. I'm also not sure that I've ever seen an employee there besides check-out staff... but maybe I don't look as severely confused as I am on the inside... though, always love Powell's when I finally find what I am seeking.

Powell's is, well, Powell's. They have been selling books for decades and do it as well as anyone out there.

Today I was selling books at Powell's on Hawthorne, one of their satellite stores. As always, the buyers were quick and professional. They knew what they needed, rejected what were frankly books I didn't expect them to take. They offered just enough more in trade that I didn't take cash.

As always, a great experience.

A quintessential Portland destination. A must-visit for any book lover coming to Portland. It s a 3 1/2 story, city block-sized bookstore. What s not to love about that? A huge selection of books, many of them used. You can find things here that you won t be able to find anywhere else. And, since so many are used, you can usually find a good deal too. And it s locally opened, which is a nice extra perk. Totally worth a stop if you are new in town, a visitor, or have simply never been.

I just love Powells. This one is obviously smaller than the downtown location, but still has everything you need and another storefront halfway down the block for things like cookbooks and more.

Powell's on Hawthorne is much smaller than the other stores I have been to and finding parking is next to impossible, but the staff are friendly and helpful and the store is bigger on the inside than it looks. They have a great selection of books and other cool items.

Portland's classic bookstore, but in a smaller size. It's like Mini-Me but less biting. No but really... This location is bigger than it looks with an extensive literature section, non-fiction, with lots of used books, adjoining coffee shop, and a great kids area. Parking can be hard to find, but drive around a couple of times and you'll find something. Selling books? You can try parking up front in the loading and unloading zone. Check out the rest of Hawthorne for some great used clothes shops, restaurants, and more. Take your time in this great spot!

The book and tchotchke selection is awesome, and it will only get better once the store expands into the empty part of the building that will link it with the Home & Garden Powell's. The staff, on the other hand, are less than welcoming, to say the least. A cashier who behaves in a normal, friendly manner is an anomaly; most act as if they are doing customers a favor by checking them out. The book buy-back people, in particular, are ridiculously pretentious they're almost like a caricature of the condescending intellectual. If you are re-selling genre fic, their scorn is palpable; they do everything but roll their eyes. I usually try to go to the downtown store or the Cedar Hills location for buy-backs, even though the Hawthorne store is far closer to where I live.
