Cozy, friendly book store with choice selections by knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff.
Extremely diverse selection; could spend hours in there. Prices are fair and the atmosphere is great.
Biggest bookstore I've ever been in. Huge selection of new and used books. Eat to find what you're looking for, and the staff is super friendly. Take some time here, it's easy to was an entire afternoon at this place!
Don't go into the home and garden Powell's unless you have an awful lot of expendable cash. There are so many fun things to buy here. Great place to find fun presents for others, but make sure to pick up something for yourself while you are at it.
I love this bookstore. You can find more than just great books...you can find all sorts of great gifts and they have both a new section and a used section. Great selection of journals and a good coffee shop too.
Awesome huge variety of books even hard to find books
They are taking covid precautions. 30 person max. I appreciate that I can get a new book and feel safe doing so, thank you!
A smaller branch of their behemoth bookstore downtown. Still great selection.
Good amount of books! A little bit of everything and it's got good prices!
Great selection and wonderfully curated. Pricing is also excellent.
A much smaller store than the main one, but a great book store. It's got a lot to browse and is manageable. The staff are friendly and helpful and have good staff pick selections. Cards and gifty things are also available. If only there were some hidden comfy chairs, but alas, there are not.
Very reasonably priced. Friendly and helpful staff.
Love Powell's, this satellite store has been a Hawthorne staple for decades and while already sprawling, is soon to be expanded.
Love all the gift nick nacks, but obviously great selection of books. Wish the kids area was a bit bigger and more welcoming.
I love books, and I love Powell s; staff at this location could be a bit friendlier, though.
What's not to love about being able to sit down and drink hot chocolate while checking out three awesome books on a rainy afternoon?
My mother in law was absorbed into the bookshelves 10/10
Visiting from out of town from the county of Texas. Cool book store with friendly and attentive staff. Powell s is on my list upon my return to Portland. Sock game strong.
Alot smaller the the other store. Similar atmosphere. Not very crowded. Had a pleasant time looking around and found the two books I wanted. The location is in a great area for shopping and dining.
OMG so many books. Talk about getting lost in the stacks!
Powells is awsome with good staff. I hope yall spend yo money there ;)
Awesome bookstore. You can get lost in the stacks for hours.
Horrible place to try and sell your quality used books. They flip through them without even looking at titles, etc. Try and tell you they're not worth anything. Rubbish. I took it approximately 300 books to sell, and only got through MAYBE a quarter of them before I realized the joker who was "helping" me was wasting my time and energy, and decided to leave. I will never go there again. Poor poor poor experience.
Even during this crazy holiday season, the staff at Powell's are calm, kind, and helpful. And they had the books I wanted!
It's a Powell's. It's not THE Powell's, but aside from The Strand in NYC very few bookstores *are*. Lovely to have another one conveniently close to the college :-)
It's a great book store with some amazing employees and not so amazing employees.
It would be nice to shop without being in someone's way but not such an issue I would stop going.
Though not as extensive as Powell's downtown location, this Powell's is just as friendly and less intimidating. The coffee shop adds a delightful aroma and their books on offer are all anyone could ask for. Portland at its best.
Perfect mini Powell's. Their gifts are curated very nicely.
It's Powell's. The staff were helpful, shelves overflowing, & books were calling out to me.
Had exactly what I was looking for in a used copy in the home and gardenn store!
Even though they don't have every book i want, and ordering has gotten harder, I always find plenty to keep me coming back. Decent prices too.
The best place for books in Portland. And journals, gifts, gizmos, even reading glasses! Excellent vibe and coffee adjoining!
Great sibling to the big store on Burnside. I found some great titles here.
Great book slection, has an amazing variety of textbooks to fantsy books. It is nowhere as large the original but it is a quaint place to relax and have a cup of coffee.
Love it, its been my stumping grounds for more than a decade.
This is a fabulous book store.... Absolutely everything you could possibly want to read, huge, beautifully organized.... Just wonderful. I wish my suitcase were bigger so I could pick up the 20 or so books I wanted!
If you know what you're ready to read, looking for lots of great thoughts on what to read, or just interested in a place to spend a rainy day, Powell's is just the best!
Much smaller than the one downtown. Staff could be friendlier.
I love this place. It has all the bookish appeal of the main Powell's downtown, but in a smaller and cozier environment. I loved wandering around their large collection, and finding a good selection of books at fair prices. I also really appreciated the coffee shop attached to the store - they had great coffee, and were a great place to sit and pass time on a rainy afternoon.
Finally, they have a good selection of poetry, and a great selection of board games that are impossible to find anywhere other than online.
A landmark in Portland, Powell's Books on Hawthorne is a quiet but lively classic book store. Great for finding gifts for family and friends, something to peak your fancy, trading in old loved books and also sitting down for a nice cup of coffee from The Fresh Pot located inside Powell's Books.
awesome bookstore, awesome people, awesome coffee! love this place!
A Hawthorne landmark for locals and tourists alike. More laid back and funky than the flagship location Downtown. My only real gripe is that the Cooking and Home Improvement books are at a separate store down the street, even though the storefront next door has been vacant for years.
The Biology section is lacking so so so much! I was, however, very excited about the number of bee and pollinator (Hymenoptera) books there were! I am a biologist that has an obsession with Spiders! Please get more Arachnid and Spider books!
Good selection and atmosphere, overall a nice little spot for literary longings
Must see in Portland! Always a great stop. Kids love it!
A must see place, plans on visiting for a few hours.
I love this place! The books are so affordable! They have lots of options for different languages! I was so happy that I could buy books in Spanish in all different levels... And I was also able to buy a book to learn French!
Powell s variety with a neighborhood bookstore feel.
Sold some books here and feel cheated. I should have just kept them for the pathetic amount they gave me. The gal appraising my books was really unfriendly and cold and I didn't feel comfortable asking her questions. All around terrible experience and it ruined my day.
Great place to find a great read. I could spend hours checking out all of their books.
Take all of the benefits perks awesomeness and selection of the overwhelming main Powells then place it into a smaller, well laid out, well stocked, friendly store that still has an urban grungy feel. Still prefer the Powells at cedar hills crossing is our favorite store
Really great selection at this location, especially their literature section! The staff is also very friendly and professional, including the awesome cafe attached to the store. This was my second trip to the Hawthorne location and I will definitely be returning
Friendly staff, and great selection of books, and other odds and ends
A miniature slice of larger powels. Right next to the Powell's home and garden book store too. Think about the scale of a Barnes and noble in size, mostly new books here, broken into sections. Can be pretty crowded, but easy to get to as well.
There's a reason this place is on the must-visit list of Portland. But for those of us who spend our lives out here, it's still a great spot. There's always a great supply of used books to pick from, and the large cafe welcomes long conversations over small cups of coffee. If you're hunting for a new book, the staff recommendations are prime places to start. The recommendations are updated often, so you won't be without material for long.
You can feel the knowledge coursing through the air as the wonderful smell of new and old books fills your nostrils. Top notch customer service and an overall lovely experience every time - even for those of us that reside in Portland :D
Powell's is always awesome and the Hawthorne staff is always helpful
Great setting for a day of book browsing. Used books are getting harder to find but keep hunting.
A great bookstore. Friendly staff. Actually two book stores. Home and garden books in store next door. Need more tables in coffee shop. Check out rotating books in front window. Right now a collection of Black Writers in an assortment of writing styles I found several new metaphysical fiction books here in the window with new perceptions. Very excited to see attention to this cutting edge writing. Too many books to choose from....spend the afternoon.
Absolutely the worst staff the horrible attitudes. Parking is a nightmare
Staff here are very judgemental. I ended up not doing business with them totally because of there additudes
Don't remember life before Powell's Books, great place, great employees!
It's a lot smaller than the Powell's downtown on in Beaverton, but it still has a good selection of new and used books.
Absolutely excellent customer service even with a huge crowd in waiting. Genuine smiles and twinkling eyes, I love it!
Powell's is an amazing book store with a huge selection. Technical books are at a separate location about a block up Hawthorne.
The perfect cozy outpost to the behemoth downtown. Great coffee, personalized recommendations, easy navigation around the store and a wonderfully kind and helpful staff!
I love the big Powell's bookstore in Portland. The staff is incredible! But, this location isn't as customer service oriented. I asked for assistance and the gal at the desk couldn't be bothered to look up from her computer screen. Another clerk bolted out of the bathroom and almost knocked me down in passing. The people at check out looked like they wanted to be anywhere but there. But, go there for the books. They have SO many books! Just be ready to fend for yourself!
My new favorite bookstore, the selection is never ending. A book for every interest and hobby and fancy. Cavernous in size, just when you think you've reached the end, you discover another room. A week is needed to fully appreciate it.
Great bookstore as Powell's always is. Just not as impressive in size as the downtown location.
Best large book store in the country. And the staff is unionized!
