They have the best customer service! My husband & I Called the office today and was helped by the best customer service representative LAURA, She was so sweet. She helped answer our questions and was clear in explaining our options. We live in California so Laura directed us to their website where we could find more HDS providers. Its been awhile since we spoke to someone from Hawaii (other than family) and her Aloha reminded us why theres NO place like home and why we're proud to be HDS members for life!!

As an insurance company one would expect that they are looking out for our good health. That is what we pay them for, right? Oh, and to help cover the cost of our dental procedures. Overall, they should be on our side, their customers, the reason they exist. However, when it comes to our dental care they seem to be lacking in both those areas. The first major flaw they have is not acknowledging the harm of putting mercury fillings into our mouths for long term use. Mercury is one of the most toxic substances on Earth. Why would anyone think that using it as a permanent filling could be anything but toxic to us? That's like a no-brainer. So why would they pay doctors to use this procedures on us? Albeit they did not invent this procedure, still should not mean they should encourage such an obvious lack of sanity by dentists. Yet they do not cover anything but mercury fillings on molars. Some dentists will apply that coverage toward the safer composite filling but that leaves a large amount to be paid by the patient. Another absurd thing they do is put a low maximum amount of coverage they will pay on your behalf for a year; usually less than the amount you pay for the year. For example, I pay them $2500 a year but they will only pay out $1200 max per year to my dentist. So if my dental bills are more than $3000 in January and they cover and pay their max of $1200, not only am I left to pay $1800 out of my own pocket, but I will have to pay for all dental bills for the rest of the year AND still pay for my insurance for the rest of the year and not be covered! How does that make any financial sense? This is a blatant rip off of our hard earned money. And for all that money they are making you would think they could at least stay educated about healthy and unhealthy procedures that they endorse, unfortunately not in their case. Why is this business even in operation? It would probably cost less not to pay for this "service" and just pay the dentist directly. A cheap way to avoid dental bills: brush when you wake up, floss once a day and brush before you go to sleep.

I have dual insurance. One HDS Plan through my work place and the other HDS plan through my spouse. My tooth crown recently fell off and I needed to get another crown ASAP due to an exposed root. After I received a $1,200.00 bill, I was shocked to hear why BOTH of my plans through HDS was not covered. I contacted customer service and this is what happened. First off customer service is open 7am-4:30pm Monday- Friday only. The wait time for my calls to actually speak to someone was about 20-25 mins on average. When I finally spoke to Denise on the phone, she stated that HDS will not cover the crown replacement. One of my plans will cover crowns in 5 years and the other every 7 years for the same tooth. Now I got my first crown in June 2013 and the crown was replaced in Feb 2018. I explained that it needed to be replaced because I couldn t leave an exposed root open for the next 4 months. Basically I got, Because your contract states every 5 years, it will not be covered. Ok so now here is the messed up part. My other insurance (the every 7 year one) was also NOT covered because EVEN THOUGH I recieved this insurance effective Sept 2017 they will not honor it because it is the same tooth. I continued to get my point across of recieving this extra insurance in 2017 and questioning why it is it not covered for this crown in 2018 when I haven t touched any of the second plan s benefits yet. I got the same bs answer, it s part of your contract. Why even have insurance if it will not cover the big expenses on why we have insurance to begin with? When asking if there was an opportunity to dispute this claim, I recieved the answer of, there is no point, it is part of your contract and they will deny it automatically. I am very disppointed with HDS services and will be spreading the word of this unfortunate experience.

I went to a provider who told me I had a "small cavity" and wanted to do some resin fillings when I was trying to get an exam for gum recession. I ended up going to Ala Moana Dental to get a referral for a periodontist, but I was completely unaware that doing that would use my one exam benefit per year. Got a referral for a periodontist who was great and helped me understand my options about gum recession. Now, back to the "cavity." Went back to Ala Moana Dental to get the "cavity" taken care of since they are right down the street from where I live and are open on weekends. Went there and was told that I did NOT have any cavities and that my teeth are extremely healthy! HDS is refusing to pay for me saving them money by not getting a procedure done that I did not need. They say it's the first provider's fault for lying to me and Ala Moana's fault for not telling me the exam wouldn't be covered. This is exactly why I am terrified of dentists, because when you find out they lied to you, you have to pay for it. And because of this, Ala Moana Dental is now refusing to provide service to me ever again. Not sure if HDS is able to make exceptions, but this whole ordeal has been ridiculous.
I need skin grafting for receding gums and HDS coverage is minimal. I still can't afford the $1,000 per tooth copay, so won't be getting the procedure any time soon.
Would give HDS a higher star rating if they had more comprehensive coverage and advocated on behalf of their members and held providers accountable.

The issues experienced registering a new user login with the Hawaii Dental Service website are asinine. The site indicates my password doesn't follow the guidelines, however, yes it does. This is not the first time creating a password. My life, like most others, revolves around creating and changing passwords. Trust me, it s legit.
Then there's the red dotted line under my username. Now I know whenever you see a red line that means something isn't right, but without any further information to go on, it s like a gps stopping mid travel. You re lost.
I called customer service who was very friendly but clearly unfamiliar with how to assist. She offered to have her manager register my new account for me. I thought this would be a great way to get registered and start using my online account. Also, immediately change sensitive information like my password.
Regrettably, after providing my sensitive information, HDS informs me I cannot log into the account for at least 24 hours. Sorry HDS, that doesn't sit well with me. Other respectable websites will provide a temporary password which can be changed immediately. Why would it take 24 hours for a customer to log into a new account YOU created? How may websites have asked you to come back in 24 hours after creating a new account? I don't need a tree to see that shade.
