I went to a provider who told me I had a "small cavity" and wanted to do some resin fillings when I was trying to get an exam for gum recession. I ended up going to Ala Moana Dental to get a referral for a periodontist, but I was completely unaware that doing that would use my one exam benefit per year. Got a referral for a periodontist who was great and helped me understand my options about gum recession. Now, back to the "cavity." Went back to Ala Moana Dental to get the "cavity" taken care of since they are right down the street from where I live and are open on weekends. Went there and was told that I did NOT have any cavities and that my teeth are extremely healthy! HDS is refusing to pay for me saving them money by not getting a procedure done that I did not need. They say it's the first provider's fault for lying to me and Ala Moana's fault for not telling me the exam wouldn't be covered. This is exactly why I am terrified of dentists, because when you find out they lied to you, you have to pay for it. And because of this, Ala Moana Dental is now refusing to provide service to me ever again. Not sure if HDS is able to make exceptions, but this whole ordeal has been ridiculous.

I need skin grafting for receding gums and HDS coverage is minimal. I still can't afford the $1,000 per tooth copay, so won't be getting the procedure any time soon.

Would give HDS a higher star rating if they had more comprehensive coverage and advocated on behalf of their members and held providers accountable.
