Laura McDowell Review of Hawaii dental service (hds)

I have dual insurance. One HDS Plan through my work place and the other HDS plan through my spouse. My tooth crown recently fell off and I needed to get another crown ASAP due to an exposed root. After I received a $1,200.00 bill, I was shocked to hear why BOTH of my plans through HDS was not covered. I contacted customer service and this is what happened. First off customer service is open 7am-4:30pm Monday- Friday only. The wait time for my calls to actually speak to someone was about 20-25 mins on average. When I finally spoke to Denise on the phone, she stated that HDS will not cover the crown replacement. One of my plans will cover crowns in 5 years and the other every 7 years for the same tooth. Now I got my first crown in June 2013 and the crown was replaced in Feb 2018. I explained that it needed to be replaced because I couldn t leave an exposed root open for the next 4 months. Basically I got, Because your contract states every 5 years, it will not be covered. Ok so now here is the messed up part. My other insurance (the every 7 year one) was also NOT covered because EVEN THOUGH I recieved this insurance effective Sept 2017 they will not honor it because it is the same tooth. I continued to get my point across of recieving this extra insurance in 2017 and questioning why it is it not covered for this crown in 2018 when I haven t touched any of the second plan s benefits yet. I got the same bs answer, it s part of your contract. Why even have insurance if it will not cover the big expenses on why we have insurance to begin with? When asking if there was an opportunity to dispute this claim, I recieved the answer of, there is no point, it is part of your contract and they will deny it automatically. I am very disppointed with HDS services and will be spreading the word of this unfortunate experience.
