We had chicken tacos in the outdoor garden under shade trees listening to live music. We enjoyed the ambience. The tacos were good but not great. The chicken was a little dry & a little bland. I was expecting more flavor. We would probably go back again in hopes of getting a more flavorful batch. Taco toppings were good. Tortilla chips & salsa were good. Prices fair.

This restaurant was just okay. The food was edible but not phenomenal. I also order a sangria that ended up just being wine and orange juice. A plus is that the food was very cheap, but apparently you get what you paid for.

Out of four dishes each and every one was horrible. We didn't order the same thing. All different menu items. The service was poor with a long wait to order and then another long wait for food. This was not during their busy time. My daughter got a margarita in a small drinking glass with too much ice and barely any drink. Expensive for the quality of the food. Over all a very negative experience. I would never ever go back.

What a disappointment! We re visiting Austin and wanted to try Tex Mex here. Guiro s was a big mistake. We ve had much better Tex Mex in Harvard Square Cambridge. The meat at Guero s is tough and grisly, the tomato salsa looked and tasted really old, the tomatoes were old and mushy, the chips mediocre, the margaritas small and tasteless. The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 is because the service was really friendly.

Mexican food that's overpriced. Our service was bad. The salsa and chips were excellent and they were the only things that were good in the restaurant. the food was mediocre. The back music venue was nice.

Service was spotty: we waited awhile before someone approached us to get drink orders. My $9.45 margarita had lots of ice and served in a small glass. Our entrees were ok, but nothing special. Overall, I was disappointed with the food, drinks, the price, and the service

Will someone explain what the draw is to this place? We're locals but friends were visiting from out-of-town so we wanted to take them somewhere decidedly Austin. Guero's was close and it was later on Sunday, so Guero's it was. The ambience is great but the food was awful. None of the salsa had any flavor, the chips were cold and just meh. The only person in our party that enjoyed their food ordered the quesadilla. Cold tamales in congealed queso. Bad food and a flavorless Bloody Mary. The evening couldn't even be redeemed by an awesome waiter. Nope! He was a low talker and completely inattentive. Satisfied my curiosity. Now I can drive by, point and tell my future guests 'that's an Austin icon with horrible food, now let's go anywhere else'.

This place has always been a nice experience, going back several decades. That is no longer the case. Mismanagement has destroyed all appeal for coming here.

Checking in and getting a pager: no problem

Waiting around: no problem

Watching group after group just walk up with no pager/no place on the list and get seated immediately: big problem

super cute tex-mex restaurant!

everything we ordered was great (quesadillas, enchiladas, chips and salsa, etc).
I really loved the chicken and cheese enchiladas with verde sauce.

the queso was almost like nacho cheese, which was not what we re used to, but still good!

clean bathrooms. friendly staff. food was priced right. great lunch spot!

I love this place. For a quick tasty meal it can't be beaten. We like sitting at the bar for drinks and snacks and great service. Great drink menu, beer and tacos and burritos that I'll come again for.

In these Plague Times with our party inoculated, we agreed on Guero s for dinner on the last night of SXSW. We were seated immediately on a patio table much to our delight. We re still not doing indoor dining as none of us are trying to be Typhoid Mary.

Queso was as good as any in town and the Margaritas were a cut above. Tart with a sharp bite of Tequila.

I haven t been to Guero s in 15 years or so and I went for the tamale plate. If a place can do good tamales or caldo de res, I m on board as those are traditional, but few do them well if they even put them on the menu.

They were great! Beef and pork seasoned just below mama s perfect. For some reason I missed that they would be covered in queso or I would asked for something else like nothing. A good tamal needs nothing but some cheap bottled salsa from Fiesta.

A little too much masa in those tamales for me. That much masa and queso made me swell up. Had to leave the rice and beans alone to get those tamales beat which was ok by me as neither was very tasty. God, I miss the Tamale House. Or El Azteca.

Great food and good service from our waiter. The drinks were a bit small compared to other places. Expected a bit larger for the price. You tend to expect a nice size margarita from a Mexican restaurant.

I had Guero's queso on my first trip to Austin in 2000, and was fixated on it ever since. On my second trip back, I purchased a tshirt and deemed it the best queso I've ever had... fast forward 12 years later, I was back in Austin last week and Guero's was my first stop. The chili con queso was as good as I remembered (thank goodness!) This time I also tried the Queso Flameado, which was a bubbly broiled cheese served with four steamy tortillas and your choice of mix-in meat. I had it with chicken and steak and was gluttous goodness! They have over 15 speciality margaritas, plus a cocktail list - try the The Purest with Patron Silver, so smooth!

If you like over priced Tex Mex, this is your place. Paid $40 for 4 tacos, including tip. I had to wait to be seated, because the hostess was "distracted", and the huge space was practically empty. Service was ok, once I sat at the bar. Prior to that, I waited for 15 mins and didnt even get water. Food was mediocre. The only reasons Im not giving them the lowest rating is because they support local musicians. They have GF options, but who cares?

Absolutely brilliant food and experience! We were waiting for the sunset to see the bats and decided to stop by this place. The crowd was super friendly. The food was absolutely delicious! We all got tacos which were supremely juicy and the rice was a melt in your mouth kind.

I thought we all agreed that Fidel Castro was a bad dude? I guess not this place as they have a picture of him proudly displayed on the wall. Food and service where slightly better than average.

A long time south congress favorite. The main thing I love is the salsa bar and the freshness of the flavors! The location can be a bit crazy but don't let that distract you from eating here.

Reasonably priced with a good atmosphere, Guero's is a Tex-Mex restaurant right in downtown Austin. Like many other locations in South Congress, this restaurant is usually packed in the evening hours, but the staff is helpful and efficient. The enchilada platter is a favorite, and their micheladas are pretty tasty.

They didn't reinvent the wheel here, but they do offer a comprehensive and delicious menu at a reasonable price.

Guero's is a great place to grab a Tex-Mex meal. Although the food wasn't the best Tex-Mex I've had in Austin, there are lots of other perks to this establishment. For one, they are perfectly located on SoCo (South Congress). After a day spent shopping, walking around, and enjoying Austin, Guero's is a great meal to compliment the day. I recommend their Burrito Especial. It is huge and incredibly filling. The queso flameado is a great appetizer that can double as an affordable entree. The biggest star of the show here is their amazing salsa bar. If you're anything like me, you prefer to douse everything in flavorful salsas. This place has got you covered. Guero's is well worth the trip. It's a great place to have a filling meal and take in the sites of Austin.

Edit: woke up with food poisoning today

Years ago this place was Excellent. Now it s kind of bland and overpriced. They brought us chips three times and every time it was a basket of crumbs. Weak margaritas. The Mole tasted burned. Bland beans and rice. Pork was dry and had little flavor, certainly among the worst pastor I ve had. Tacos were sloppy and the cuts of everything were just all different sizes. No consistency. Can t say I ll come back on my own dime again. Used to be every night was a wait for a table, tonite there was plenty of room, because it s not good anymore.

It's an okay place for food. The Tacos Pastor were tasty as we're the Spinach and Mushroom Enchiladas. However the Steak Tacos were dry. The service was really good and the salsas and Pico de Gallo were fresh.

Service was fine but the margarita was nasty and the food horrendous I've never had Mexican food this bad. The "red sauce" for enchiladas is basically ragu marinara. Potato fillers instead of actual ground beef. The fact the place was busy and "acclaimed" by locals made me think a lot less of the city.

The rich history, amazing waitstaff, authentic Mexican food, and over all appearance are all reasons anyone should go to here. From the outside venues that's hosted some famous artist, and been a part of critically a claimed movies like "Chef", this place has what your looking for and then some. The eclectic pieces they use for decorations on the inside make this place more than Austin Weird. Stop buy and get some tacos is you're on South Congress, you won't be disappointed.
