A good 4 star hotel rather than 5. The breakfast buffet was excellent. The rooms are spacious but a little old fashioned and dark. We had a problem with an unpleasant odour from the drains and this was not resolved satisfactorily even though it was reported three times.

Great Hotel, classy, maximum cleanliness, excellent hospitality. Nice location ... I'd suggest an escalator, given the 93 steps to walk to the street, especially for the elderly or suffering. It was not my case but they are a bit tiring ... for the rest hotel to recommend.

This is our third visit to The Excelsior. As previously the rooms are spacious and comfortable, we were upgraded to one with terrace and it suited the three of us very well.

The key reasons for returning to this hotel are the proximity of transport links to airport, ferries and the rest of the island, within easy walking distance of town (they also provide a shuttle but I've not used) and its pool/sea area.

Breakfast buffet is extensive and delicious although it often took a while to be seated as it was a very busy weekend.
Bar service and selection is good although the food served there or poolside was average. We didn't try the restaurant as preferred to eat out both for price and choice.

Very spacious and well appointed Hotel in a good location a 15 minute walk from Valletta. Rooms with a Terrace provide excellent views over Marsamxett Harbour, Room 717 recommended. Superb Swimming Pool with plenty of loungers and covered areas available, a small number of friendly Ducks are also frequent visitors. Restaurants and Bars provide a good selection of food and drink especially on Themed evenings.
The downside for older and disabled people is the steep steps leading to to main road and the 100 metre hill up the Bus Station and pedestrian area in Valletta. Taxi services are readily available but fairly expensive, 12 Euros at the time of writing. An alternative is an Electric Buggy Taxi Service at 8 Euros with the advantage of taking you to St John s Square in the centre of Valletta.

Hotel on paper 5 * although I would give 4 as a structure a little dated and not completely renewed. A big plus is the private beach, quiet and comfortable after long walks around. Clean sea. 2 swimming pools, one of which is heated 24h. Great service. Recommended because in super center very convenient for buses and restaurants

Highly recommended. Wow. You must eat in the restaurant too at least once during your stay, beautiful full flavoured meals. The staff were very professional and helpful. We went on an excursion one day and a boat actually picked us up from the hotel jetty (much more impressive than a taxi!) Ooh and the shampoo and conditioners provided in the rooms smelt divine!

For 15 years I've traveled all over Europe. I can say that a 5-star hotel as weak as I did not meet. And I'll justify what I'm saying.
1. I arrived at 9 am brought by the hotel car. I was told I did not have the room yet and it was specified that it was room 304. I left my luggage and left for the city. I returned to 13 and room 304 it was not ready yet. At 14 o'clock I came back and after long discussions I was definitely given another room that was already done. I paid the whole room plus breakfast and still stopped me and a guarantee that generally unlocks after 20 days from departure.
2. I was at breakfast. All sausages and cheese were old, and they got out of the tipla for a long time. If you get later than 9 half of the casserole are empty. A very poor breakfast and with poor quality products.
3.Thank you with the elevator is an adventure. And 20 minutes to wait for a lift. As there is only a fire staircase I used it to avoid losing my vacation in front of the elevator.
4. In the morning at 8 o'clock we woke up in the room with the woman who was doing clean, which of course scared us. I asked her to come later and I did not see her until 18 when we called her .
5.The most interesting policy of the hotel is to turn on the lights in all the balconies and to turn them off when they want it. If you want to sleep with the window open because you do not have the air conditioning you do not have it because the light is blind to you. with the hotel manager who told me that "this is hotel policy and if I do not like to pull the debt and shut the window."
The quality of a five star hotel is 250 euros per night. Note that breakfast is not included and you pay 14 euro per person for it.

A well located, equipped, and smart hotel. The views from our room were great and the balcony was a good spot to sit and enjoy the warm weather (we visited in November). However, you could easily see into your neighbours' balconies, so don't expect any privacy when using it. There is a rather grand series of stairs down from the main road through terraced gardens, but once you're out on the main road take care when crossing! There is a slight bend and trying to get across was a bit of a pain. The rooms themselves were well-appointed and had all of the facilities that you would expect from a 5 star hotel. However, our bathroom was in need of a bit of maintenance with four cracked tiles, a hole in the skirting next to the bath and the paintwork needed touching up. The breakfast buffet was fine and included a wide range of different types of food to suit most tastes. We were going to try one of the restaurants but there wasn't a menu available to assess whether they did the type of food we wanted and we didn't necessarily want to risk that their buffet option didn't suit us either. That being said, the staff were all very friendly and we would probably go back if we stay in Valetta again.

I really can't fault it. Felt well looked after and a valued guest throughout our week holiday. Towards the end of the week there was a particularly busy day where we had to wait 5-10 minutes extra for drinks to be bought to our sunbeds and as I was getting frustrated I suddenly realised how used I had got to their ridiculously high standards and how lucky we were to have drinks bought to us at all on such a hot and busy day! We will return!

Perfect

I do not frequent hotels of this "5 star" level, but this stay was included in a travel package. Though my requirements are minimal for a hotel (I usually stay in hostels or budget hotels) I was extremely disappointed by this hotel, particularly when I consider the price. I've stayed in nicer hostels for 10% the nightly cost and I don't think I will ever be staying at this or any other Excelsior hotel in my future travels after this experience.

The halls were musty and dark. My room smelled of mildew and was so humid that my passport curled and papers felt damp. Though the pool is large, the staff at the pool were overbearing at closing time and almost forced people to leave even though the pool was still open to guests. Additionally, the "private beach" was tiny and not really a beach, but a patch of sand dumped next to a wall that was next to the harbor. I did enjoy the small harbor swimming area but I think it was the only thing I liked at this hotel and it was a weak like.

The air conditioning shut off when you left the room which meant the humidity and heat upon returning were quite awful. There was a constant sound of water dripping in the walls near my room. The pillows were almost useless and squished away to nothing after 5 minutes of resting your head on them. Our key cards stopped working several times and had to be reset (not to mention the 5 charge per card without any included). The concierge was not helpful when asked about water activities (snorkeling, scuba, sailing, paddle sports, etc.) despite the hotel guide specifically mentioning these activities. The breakfast buffet was mediocre and most of the "hot" items (eggs, potatoes, roasted veggies, etc.) were room temperature. The hotel restaurant was slow and failed to seat us after about 2 hours of waiting.

In summary, I cannot express how little I enjoyed my stay here. I've never experienced a hotel this awful before and I hope I never do again.

Grande Hotel Excelsior Malta is a 5 star luxury hotel situated in La Valetta Malta. It is a big establishment, at seaside. The cuisine is at a level one should expect from a 5 star resort, nothing spectacular. There is free WI-FI at rooms. The hotel is located very near to ancient Valetta, about 15mn walk.

We had a week at the hotel. The room was clean and tidy with a nice view of the harbour. One of the lights in the room wasn't working properly but it didn't spoil our holiday. All the staff were very attentive and pleasant. Food was good, the themed nights were great. There was such a large selection to choose from. Breakfast was excellent. I was a bit disappointed that the gratuity we put on our bill wasn't going to the staff that looked after us, so next we will be tipping the staff who looked after us instead. We would definitely recommend this hotel.

I have very little to complain about this hotel.

I have very little to complain about this hotel.

For me, the only downside is this 5 * classification: it is certainly large, there are 2 swimming pools, but I find that everything lacks "prestige". The building already seems dilapidated in places despite its young age (2007). Breakfast: getting a thermo of coffee (mediocre) is random and almost all the products presented at the buffet are very industrial (and would not cross the threshold of my house which however is not a 5 *)

With friendly helpful staff and good facilities, the Excelsior aspires to be a 5-star hotel.
Pluses: good sized rooms with bath and shower; knowledgable and helpful concierge service; good Wi-Fi throughout the hotel; walking distance of Valletta (uphill there) ; good indoor pool and fitness centre (but you need to change in your room); free on-site parking.
Minuses: not an imposing building from the outside , nor good views; one huge lounge, therefore, nowhere quiet to sit away from loud parties, football on TV, etc. The lounge is also the atrium fir the restaurant on the floor below, so all the food smells rise in the evening.
Would I stay there again - yes (at the right price)

Excellent experience for European-Australian-South American meeting. Incredible location literally on the port of Valletta! A little dated but high level structure. Ability to manage even very large groups. Attentive and caring staff. Equipped with the best technology necessary for a high level meeting. Promoted with flying colors.

Pretty awful. Understandably off season in January but it was almost impossible to get an answer from room service. I had to call the front desk for anything to happen. Ordered a steak which took 45 minutes to arrive and included moldy bread. Toilet didn't flush properly, reported it and was told maintenance would attend the room while i was out and now still doesnt flush properly. Breakfast was actually good with attentive service. Staff all very polite, sadly now sceptical of food hygiene after this evening. Complaints not well received by the front desk.
