I am very interested in sending my 15 yr old daughter to job Corp..we are from texas..Can some one give me info about it

So this facility is defiantly an interesting place, 3 big meals a day, a $30,000 trade for free and a place to live.
You go through 3 weeks of "training" before going to your trade than you get $21.50 every two weeks. If your up to it, you'll graduate in 3-12 months from easiest trade CNA and Welding to longest trade to Advanced trade.
My suggestion,
*if you love a mellow trade with lots of needles and blood join CMA
*if you love helping the elderly join CNA
*if you love building with wood, Carpentry
*for metal join welding
*for fighting join Security or Corrections
*like electronics? Join Electrical, they also deal with solar panels
Thats about it it, know you know your free to go :)

Parents if you child is a minor please do NOT send him here this place is supposed to better your children it makes them worse it made me worse in a way I m a minor 17 about to be 18 have been here for 10 months this place has lack of care for students Mrs. Layne is a rude most I polite person ever and the dorms are plain nasty and outdated. Don t get me started on the food it is terrible and this place Gary Job Corps is corrupt there are drugs everywhere . If you are an adult I don t recommend coming here parents don t send your child here he s better of somewhere else

Full of ghetto people and it's pretty much a prison. People are selling and doing drugs having sex everywhere most of the staff pretty much ignore you. If you want your high school transcripts good luck . Not much to do I guess that is why people always on drugs or having sex. STDs are everywhere here. Food is gross and gives you the runs. They accept anyone here even criminals everything gets stolen or you get jumped a lot of gangs.

I attended Gary Job Corps back in 2016 I completed the Pharmacy Technician program in about 5 months. Before I attended Job Corps I was working full-time making 8.50 hour barely brigining in 600 every two weeks. They paid for my driver s license my, my test certification, and state registration. Within two weeks of graduating I landed my 1st Pharmacy Tech job making 12.50/hr. A month later I was hired at OptumRx in sugarland with a pay of 14.84/hr plus hella OT and benefits. I worked for Optum a little over a year my ending salary was $15.50/hr . Now I just got got hired as a Senior Pharmacy Technician for Optum specialty pharmacy with a pay of 17.25/hr. I couldn t have made a better decision in my life I m able to comfortably provide for me and my child ! Gary Job Corps isn t designed for your luxury it s meant to help you obtain a trade to obtain a career. Once I isolated myself from all negativity it was a breeze. And if I could go back I definitely would have been more focused on my studies and maybe even picked up an additional trade.

I loved it was a great childhood experience and met alot of new friends along with earning a trade.
Gary job corps has to be the worst, unsafe , place ...
Gary job corps has to be the worst, unsafe , place fill with chaos and distractions . Ms. Lane (the center director ) has no control over her facility and let people showcase violent behavior . A arrangement of kids especially minors have sexual relationships with people of age (18 years and older ) and people constantly have sex and is impregnated on campus . A minor was just stabbed on July 27.19 by her peers due to a massive brawl . All ms. Lane did was give the participants a snap on the wrist and held a meeting with people (others and I ) that had nothing to do with the subject at hand .
Staff :
Mrs. lane shows favoritism toward the people out of state they are paid between $120-150 biweekly allowance while the people from Texas have to survive off $25 biweekly .Ms. Lane discriminated against multiple students due to their sexual preference. She looks out for her kind ( the gay community ) who on many occasions , may of them have fought minors , had sex on campus , and started conflict to the point others safety is at risk ( almost jumped by 8 of them and nothing was done ) She overall makes people feel belittled , unwelcome, and foolish . She will degrade you to the point you feel less then a human being .
Mrs . Patterson over terminations is unprofessional yells at student and violates their right without due process or proof of any sort !
Mr. Baruant, Ombent as of 07/2019 has been a viral sensation as he is recorded saying to his students that gay people have mental illnesses and have yet to be dealt with by any administrators or fired ! He stated this after a transgender student came into the classroom. As that individual left he started ranting about his point of views about the gays having mental illnesses . A person who has no psychologist degree or have studied mental health is educating students with this pure ignorance . WHEN SHOWN to the staff nothing was done !
Mr. Sanchez has called me out of my name and has judged the students instead of helping those who wants a valid educational experience! . If you want your child to go to a unprofessional, distasteful, and learn disrespectful traits this is the place for you !
My experience with the supervisors Mr. Gill and Mrs . Valdez has always been a pleasant experience . If you need any guidance or anything done ASAP go to them instead of the listed staff above . They will surpass the chain of commands to get things done .
If your in CNA my recommendation is Mrs .Brown she will make things get done in a timely matter especially with your progress and your development as a student . She will also show professionalism to the point You ll want to demonstrate those qualities to your peers .
Living conditions :
The living conditions on campus is very poor . The dorms house not only students but rats, rodents , and insects . Most of the dorms have mold or is developing mold , which is hazardous for asthmatic students or students with breathing conditions . The dorms lack working washer and dryers .
Cafeteria:
The cafeteria reuses dirty dishes and silverware. They put out expired food and do not clean out the soda or milk machines . To the point students get sick from drinking liquids out of the machine !
Safety :
People in welding and hard trades have access to make weapons including a machetes that was found as of 07/2019 and razor that are used to stab other people . Community life does a horrible job of insuring people s safety . In the course of the July 27.2019 stabbing they advised the STUDENTS to pull the people fighting off each other . People also use the metal silverware to use as weapons along with hidden supplies that are buried on the government grounds ! Blunts are offered at $10-$15 on campus by local drug dealers . Even cocaine is a option if it s your cup of tea !
Conclusion :
Either live off campus or seek educational options somewhere else . Because unless you are one of the administrators favorites if you have a issue it won t be resolved or if you need counsel it will not be available to you in no way ,shape , or form !

I feel sorry to read all the sad stories of a place that offers the opportunity to continue with your professional life, I got a diploma of Data Processor. I loved this job corps. The reason I'm writing this is because I was just thinking about the good times I had there back in 2004-2005. I might some great people there and I wish I could meet them again. I wish I could meet the female that I use to talk to and who use to braid my hair. After I left job corps I went back home to Mississippi and then moved to Alabama and started working in a mine call Hoover INC. Crush&Stone in Huntsville AL. I moved back home after a year and a half. I started working in our furniture factory and roofing housing with my best friend. After that, I started driving Tractor Trailers at the age of 21 but grew up driving them in my teens because I was raised on a dead-end road that was a corn field. I moved to Arkansas and Texas again. Then I moved to Indianapolis IN for a while back in 2009-2010. After I left there I moved back to my hometown. Then I moved to Minnesota where I have been since 2012. I have traveled the whole U.S while getting paid and I still travel the U.S after over a million miles later. I'm 34 now going on 35 June 25th with 4 kids one by my ex-wife who is a 14-year-old girl. I have 3 kids which are one girl 6 years old and two boys 2 years old and 2 months old after being in a 9-year relationship. I am planning on getting married again after my 10th year and maybe one more kid. I wouldn't change anything I have done in life. Gary helped me become a man at 17 and I took off from there.

My son just graduated and is headed into the military afterwards.
I give the program and the experience from a parents point of view 5 stars across the board.

I honestly will not even recommend this for anybody to go while still being In high-school. Live the high-school experience & make the best of it. After, it will be more better for you to go & just do a trade. My friend was not able to join the military because she didn't have enough clock hours on her high-school diploma. I didn't recieve my high-school diploma while I was .5 credit away from finishing due to the fact that my "file" was lost & everything turned out a mess after that. As far as my trade, I had the best & amazing teacher ever. For that I am lucky! I made great friendship to people who I still talk to till this day. So think twice before you go! If you have a different experience than me &my friend did then you are lucky!!!

I was a student here at this very campus in 96 til 97,and this campus was wide open, and it was also a dangerous campus to live on at that time between the weapons, drugs, alcohol and the gang violence surprised anyone graduated at that time. The dorm I was a student in was Sugar Ray Leonard Hall, better known as5306 or motel 6

Just left Gary this morning. I was looking forward to an educational experience but I was unsafe got stolen from after just two days was harassed about my color a girl tried to fight me, and that was just to much for me. It was nothing like I was told. Unless you are black or Mexican your made fun of and put down. Everywhere you look there are people having sex making out, lots of people selling drugs even though they offered to move me dorms it didn t matter cause every dorm was the same. I felt to unsafe to even study or sleep. I left after four days glad I didn t stay. It was a disappointment. This is for drop outs andb people fresh out of juvenile. Not for good or soft people. People there are thieves and snakes.

I went to Job Corps in 1981, yes there were some fights, but the Gary Police was tough. Drugs?. Maybe marijuana, not lots. The drinking was done at the San Marco's river. I escaped many times to town with my Mexican, Vietnamese and Laotian friends. I stayed at Gary for 4 years. I loved there. I learned to speak the English, Vietnamese and Laotian. I lived in Dorm 008 them moved to the Honor Dorm. Job Corp is good, but you must be tough. I miss my soccer coach George Polanco. My nick name was Brazil. Louis Wilson DeArmas.

I just got out in june of 2015 it's an alright place, there's lots of ups and downs.. ups being: game room, pool hall, free training, etc... downs being: lots of fights, sex, drugs, rude people, the food is sometimes bad sometimes good (I like the burgers and pizza), not always enough time to eat (mainly lunch), the weather there wasn't the best and there was lots of bugs due to the stagnant water.. so it's an alright place if you can put up with it, I personally had no problems with people (there were rude people but if you ignore them they don't usually do anything) just have headphones and patience and you can get through it.. just keep thinking about your goals.. they helped me get my high school diploma, my license and my welding certification. There was a problem with people becoming sick (once someone gets sick it's easy for others to get sick as well) it was called the Gary sickness because almost everyone got it and we all got it around Christmas break.. there was also a problem in some of my dorms (two of them got shut down, one for being too nasty and another due to a riot)

I got my foot out the door when I graduated twice here and earned 2 different Certifications. I also made a few good friends here and we were all drugs free. I think I made a wise decision coming here because I accomplished what I came for and I really tackled it.I really miss the food at Garyjobcorps and I wish I can stop by and eat there. I really appreciated that I came here because it's free..Who does that? Garyjobcorps really made a difference in my life

I went to Gary from 1988 to 1990 We never had a gang problem, they were there but if you steered clear of them you never had a problem, there was plenty of weed I smoked so much I was surprised I graduated, went in the Navy and never looked back.

Terrible place Would not recommend this location if wanting to attend Job corps.
Went here a while back and it was a nightmare. Staff were extremely careless and allow fights in dorms , alot of people try to act all hard and tough yet when there off the campus they act normal. WARNING if your going to the construction trades like welding , electrical , cement , hvac , warehousing ect , they have it the worst , Old dorms and 2 of them are open dorms. No one will respect you or your space. Other dorm members even in your cube will steal from you yet act like they are your friends. You Also eat lunch last and get the left overs. Its also full of adults and teens with felony and criminal records. Drugs are also imported on the campus due to people hoping fences at night. I also witnessed 11 people from my dorm which was electrical sneak and got into our cube & Jump and beat down one person from Hvac at nigtht when Hvac dorm was shut down. You also Do not have the ability to leave campus anytime you want too if you live on the campus. Even cab drivers will not come there to pick you up. When working off the campus in the construction industry , you will not receive any pay.... lame as hell.
If your going into the other trades like CNA , Accounting Ect , they get the nicer dorms and also they get to eat lunch first. when they go work off the campus they also get paid. Its like there treated like royal and stars. If going to this campus then do one of the two i stated above.
The campus alone can be pretty messy at times. You have the ghetto/hood type people there and "gary hoes" , You have the skater/emo type crowd and you also have the normal and loners aswell.
You do get paid bi weekly being there but Don't expect much.. You start around 25$ and the highest it goes is about 40.. They do not provide clothing for you but if you been there for some time , they do give you a clothing allowance that can only be spent at walmart aka hygiene and clothing stuff.
Pros if living on the gary campus
-Feeds you and housing
-Payed little every two weeks but its somthing.
CONS
Agian Careless staff.
Lots of drama and i mean alot
Non respectable roommates.
Can't leave off campus after working hours Even if your over 18
Cabs wont even pick you up
Gangs
- Lots of Theft = NEVER leave your electronics or valuables un attended.
- If you snitch or rat some one out , Don't think staff will protect you because 80% of the time they won't.
Conclusion
If you have no other choice as i stated above via homeless or probation ect , then go there and live on campus but do not get caught up in all the BS. Any crime you do is a felony and they will hall you off to jail.
If your someone who has choices via Car , lives close by , able to travel. Ither be a non resident or go to a diffrent campus.
Check this , If you want to go there for the wrong reasons , you will regret it lol trust me.

Watch my words
This place is nice for people who have no problem following the rules but if you have a free will and a spirit and a mind that thinks this is not the place to come is full of rules and non sence that it just seem hypocritical and every 6 months they have new company but you will learn about that later but that program helps so yea depending on the trait you get
I am currently attending Gary Job Corps living in ...
I am currently attending Gary Job Corps living in Bluebonnet dorm and so far my experience here is not all that bad as far as dealing with people. I have made good friends, I get fed three times a day, and a place to live. However, although I do appreciate getting free education, though I wish they cared a little more about if the student havs a place to go after they graduate and if they get everything they need to succeed in life. I am 17 years old and being a minor could be a little too much because they don't get the benefits as much as people 18 and above. For instance, It took me only 4 months to complete my trade and I haven't turned 18 yet and I really need a drivers license but have to wait till I'm 18, and I found out they have minor driving classes but not all the staff members know all the information so it can all get confusing. Other than that, this place is what you make it, and if you stay away from all the trouble and drama that's even better. I graduated a public high school but decided to come here because college is expensive and find it a waste of time, so I am thankful for this place. And not to mention, taking a second trade is being considered since I'm about to graduate.
BLUEBONNET! Dorm shout out lol!!!

Somebody has stolen very important things including ss card, id. Everything i put in a report about it to you idiots. Two months later come to found out you never submitted the reports. These kids are nothing but thugs i never enjoyed it ever. The RA say they care but reality they don't. Just graduated from that prison and im never letting my future come here at all. I wish i can give this no star at all.

!!! * * * When you get there stay away from all money flow dont smoke cigarettes or weed there to $$$ and if you get caught with weed there dont expect to have a decent job for at least 7-12 years. dont mess with the girls, making freinds, or the milk. hopping the fence was fun I haft to admit but if you get caught i do beleive thats federal time which is worse it think than gettin caught with weed. u might think you smart enough to smoke weed all the time there and not get caught which was like a game to me till i got caught like everyone else. Ive had the worst time finding a job every since and now have been homeless at least 4-5 times and currently struggling with a wife a 6 month old son and no Job only places that will hire me is moving companies cause of my build, and thats about it. BOTTOM LINE GET IN GET OUT. if you do it right itll help you a lot but if you just wanna have fun n all that dont go there cauuse they will screw you like the american dream.

I can personally say that i did enjoy my time out at Gary Job Corps, i made friends as soon as i got there, some of the staff were quite fun to talk to, i did struggle academically, but other than Academics, my trade was actually really simple, and i took Security, but in all honesty, i really like Gary Job Corps, and would definently go back if i could.

I am currently in this program. I am living on center. I came to Gary Job corps wanting to try something new and do something different. I came here March 1, 2016 and I am about to graduate on November 23, 2016. Before I came here I was at home still attending high school supposed to be graduating high in May of 2017. When I first applied I was thinking that hey why don't I try something that no other person in my school would think about doing. So I applied for Gary Job Corps and after finishing my applications and everything on January 26, 2016, I got the call saying that I was able to come here and all that February 16, 2016 I was all happy and excited at first and then she said the date that I was going up to Gary Job Corps and I got even more excited. So when I first arrived I had fun with a lot of my CPP members and did everything that I was supposed to do in CPP. When I found out that I was going to the NUECES DORM, I was like YES I GOT ONE OF THE NICE DORMES and when I got there I was like this is going to be the greatest time of my life, well I was wrong. The first room that I was moved into, I was being harassed sexually by my other roommates. Then they moved me into a second room and I had a great time with the roommates that were in this room and then they all graduated and I ended up alone for six weeks cleaning daily and everything making the room smell nice and all of the good things that cleaning does. Then it came to the week before my family vacation and I got a new roommate the Saturday before. The next weekend my roommate was gone because she assaulted me by punching me in the face, slapping the back of my head three times, slamming my head into the floor, kicking me in the ribs, and slapping me on top of my head with a backpack that had stolen items in it. Then I got a new roommate named D'LISSA STEGER who was the best roommate ever. Then I got my new roommate named Miranda Trujillo about to be Miranda Gutierrez whose been here less than I have. She has called me a liar so many times and I was going to give up and my mom stopped me because she knew that I could hang in. My roommate can call me a liar and say that I don't have asthma and allergies but she not the one who has ever had to deal with the struggles going along with those problems. Even though the food here is disgusting, at least were getting food instead of having to dig in trash cans or begging for food or starving ourselves. There is no reason to complain about the food or the education at least this stuff is free and you don't have to pay for it. Like they say this isn't your last chance but it is your best chance. I have broken down so many times here that I was wanting to go home, I thought that I didn't need this place but since I came here in the middle of the eleventh grade I would be at home in the same grade as my sister and I'm trying to be a great role model for my sisters. I have had tough times and good times but the greatest time you will have at this place is when you walk across that stage or get that certification in your hand saying you finally did something worth more than stupid things like drugs, guys, girls, etc.. You don't need that stuff to succeed, you want it to help you but in all reality that stuff is distracting you and bring you deeper in a hole and soon enough you are going to be buried in that hole asking or begging for people help and they won't help you because either you owe them or because you have lost there trust because you did something stupid. I have gained friend here but have lost more friends here than I ever gained. Mots people say there is time to fool around in life and everything but that time comes after you finish everything that you need too. The only way you can earn or get things is if you work for them and that is what they try and teach you here. This place is a great place and could get better but it still is a great place. I would suggest this place for anybody in need of a job, anybody who decided to drop-out of high school, and anybody who needs help in life.
GET IN & GET OUT!!

67 year old retired union boilermaker welder, join job corps nov,13 1968. stayed 18 months, went home April 23 1970, went to work next day. best decision I made in life. I read all these netgotive comments and I realize there are a lot of kids that don't want to grow up. everwhere you go there'll be rules and regulations. its all up to you to take advantage of this golden opportunity, don't let no one lead you wrong.

From experience. I spent 10 months on center. Never have I lived in such a filthy enviorment, the staff are careless and are very irresponsible and are rude as hell, they treat you like you are nothing and are bullies. They never answer your calls and the benefits they say they provide. They don't. I hope this place burns in hell & someone speaks up about how shirty they are running this place.

I would recommend job corps for any 17-23 yr old to learn not only a trade, but how to be independent and take care of yourself. I graduated 22 yrs ago from Gary JC in south Tx.....it was the best time of my life. I was active on and off campus from Bluelite Drill Team Lt. Col (still have the Certificate) and dorm sports to singing in local church and college choirs (now Texas State). It's what you make it. Avoid the drugs and gangs, manage your time and $ and you can leave there LIFE ready while making true lifelong friends.

I currently go to Gary Job corps and the program is what you make it. If you stay out of the drama you will grow and leave successful. Of course there are rules to follow this isn't the place to find your lover, do what you want. This is a place for people who have no hope and want a second chance at life. I'm very happy to be a CNA trainee. My instructor Ms. Zook is amazing she is like a grandma to me. The academics team is amazing they will help you if you are willing to meet them half way. I'd rather see people come in that want every ounce of help they can get rather than people coming because their best friend or wifey is here or just want to play around and get terminated for stupid stuff because that gets old. Like I said the program is what you make it, everyone's view point is different because it's how they treated the program. It's relatively easy if you just do what you got to do I currently have No NIRs, No Tardies! Why? Because I made a commitment to change and better myself. I want more, so I'm going to make sacrifices and work my program because at the end of the day...I'll be the one on stage getting my certificate and on my way to college. The choice is yours! You determine how your life will end up! Remember you are on a government property...so be careful bring stuff in at your own risk.

Gary job corps was a great place .please do not believe the negative reviews about gange and violence and all of thst it's a lie. I was here for a little over a year and I'll tell you the honest to God truth. Job corps is what you make it, you get involved in drama and relationships with people then yes it's gonna absolutely suck I PROMISE!! But if you step back look at what you have there then it's a blessing .I was a trouble making always fighting POS....went to Gary job corps and took Corrections under Major Oldbury and I graduated, got a good check to leave on, tons of free dental work I've been needing, reshaping and bleaching even, weight loss program and got a job at the Sheriff's office, that was almost 5 years ago. Since then job corps has contacted me and gave me 3 scholarships......YOU GET WHAT YOU PUT IN. I did meet my wife at Gary and we now have a little girl but I can't stress it to you, DO NIT FOCUS ON RELATIONSHIPS focus on your future that's what matters. Job corps will give you the world on a platter it's your choice to take it .That's all I wanted to say, hope this helps people make their decision. AND BTW THEY HAVE 24/7 ON SITE PATROLLING SECURITY. Yes there are people who do bad things like sell drugs but of 1200 students there are maybe 10-20 with drugs and non sense but it's your choice to surround yourself with that. If your really can't make it through the program then it's not the center it's you. You chose bad friends and bad relationships and most of all you chose to let it decide how successful your future will be. I cant say it enough if you fall into being in fear and surrounded by bad people then it was you who put you there.

From Nov. '69 to Aug '70, I trained in radio repair at Gary. During the first 2 months challenges in getting along were presented as corpsmen adjusted to the racial dynamics. After that, things went well. Gary's training prepared me for a very successful air force career followed by a successful job as an English professor at a university. Job Corps is a program worth investing your time. It is a certain pathway to a successful life.

The new company that s running Gary doesn t really...
The new company that s running Gary doesn t really care about what goes on so it s not getting any better.
So let s start off with living conditions :
There s only two dorms that are new and have slightly better accommodations the dorm I stayed at constantly had roaches, never had Ac or heater in the winter, your dorm life will really depend on how you put up with certain social ques or environments and if you re quick to react negatively we ll the out come will be the same negative. They don t let you leave during the week and are quick to take away certain privileges regardless of how you behave it s more of a we take the punishment as a group so some weeks you won t be able to buy soap, food, ex. There s constantly a rotting smell coming from certain rooms, the beds will leave you with back aches and sometimes hives, blisters ex. We re expected to clean but never have the supplies to clean correctly. Apparently we re also rated on expectations in class and in trade but most of the time staff doesn t do a good job because they just can t meet everyone and don t care about what you learn or don t. So because of that trolly and weekend passes will be suspended.
Food: it s true we do get fed three times a day and twice on the weekend. however, if you have a weak stomach it s going to be hard to get some things down and it s better just not to eat at all. I ve constantly seen rotting vegetables put out, staff dropping food or appliances and still using them or not wiping them down, no gloves or hair nets, the food itself is your basic slop with the exception of one or two good meals that are palatable. Even then you might throw up or have diarrhea for the next hour. I think that has to do with the cleanliness of it all.
Recreation: everyday life at Gary is okay if you know what to do and who to hang around with. Weight room and boxing always has something to do, art room has things but has weird rules, music room hardly has instruments but you can go and meet people to do things like open mic and talent shows, theater has grumpy staff and sometimes won t let you in but if you do get in just prepare for a sweaty movie on a projector screen that works (sometimes), there s track and occasionally soccer / football games you can swap in for.
Health: as far as having an infirmary goes its nice to know that you can actually get a little bit of help, just don t expect the help to be immediate or appropriate to what you actually need. Just be accustom to always being in pain (:
There s a lot to Gary but you re really there for a trade and even then. You don t get trained right. Most of the instructors don t care about their jobs. It s lazy and never really what you re going to see in the real world. Apparently some of the certifications aren t even worth much because when you get out you need to pay for the appropriate type of certificate to get into the workplace. Regardless I ll say this.
I m doing work spending time at a place where everything is bland, drugs still happen, crime still happens, getting paid 25$ every two weeks (sometimes they don t pay us so it s never certain), still scared that I might not get a job after I leave . So if you re worried that things won t work out chances are they won t.
I ve been there for 6 months. I m still worried I won t get work when I get out. I still feel an urgency every time I step on campus. There s constantly a gut wrenching feeling while I m there.
Also not gonna talk about the amount of times I hear and see people get jumped then end up going to jail or kicked out for trying to defend themselves.
Also they give you 25$ every two weeks like that s going to help you with hygiene. I know people who haven t showered in weeks because they have to budget and never have enough cash to buy everything they need. It s actually disgusting.

I went to Gary Job Corps back in January of 2016 and left August of 2016. It didn't work out the first time. Because me leaving home for the first time and not really knowing how snakes really are or how the world really is. I had to get a taste of it just to see. Anyways. My point is job corps is what you make of it. You stay in your damn lane and do what your suppose to then you will be fine. If your going to socialize with people there make sure it's the people that fits your values and going after the same that you are. Keep yourself busy study, gym, music, write etc. I have another chance to go back make something of myself and this time with growing and going through challenges I will complete this program. I promise you that you will walk out as a different Man and Woman. It may not be the best of the best place but it sure is worthit when you live a life of a struggle and try to come up.

Former student for plumbing 11 years ago. Going here has its benefits but has its downfalls as well. Let me get this out, once you graduate, you'll receive tokens; tools from your trade & a severance pay ($700.00+). They will also pay you around $20.00 & a letter asking about your update until you've found a job & end the pay. If you are unemployed too long, they'll stop paying anyway. Job corps may help some learn to be on their own but it was like a prison/military there. Of course there are activities such as parties, sport games, & a gymnasium. One of the issues there is lot of mentality unstable and gang related people there. The friends I once had, moved on, opportunities to find a job related to your trade will be scarce unless you know someone, otherwise slim to none. I recommend anyone who go to continue education because you'll waste your time applying for jobs using Gary job corps as a reference.

Worst place ever I don't recommend it people have sex for cigarettes and honey buns. The people there steal your rooms are not even safe. People are always fighting never getting along. The teachers and staff that work there don't even get along with each other. All the stuff that they have there for fun doesn't exist they make it up for you to want to go there and make money. You make $21 every two weeks and then they raise it up after you stay there for an x amount of days to $31 every two weeks. The anger management teacher it's not worth anything made him mad my first day there. The whole place is falling apart. The only reason if you have to go as if it's your last option. Please consider other places before coming here. I stay here for a year. And people sell drugs on campus.

Some of the staff there are just rude like the people there that drive the vans don t help you sometimes the bus just drive past you in the rain they don t clean there vents. The vents have mold in them so bring medicine. There s people that smoke , you got kids having sex. Some of the dorms look terrible
Now, I know that this might be an outdated review....
Now, I know that this might be an outdated review.
But I finally brought myself up to a point where I can write this.
Okay. I was a student from sept 1 2015 to February 7th 2017.
First things first, the other students bullied and harassed me in the dorm.
Bluebonnet was the name, and it got so bad towhere they switched me to Guadalupe.
But it was not just in the dorm, it was in the trade as well.
I started out as a Medical Assistant, then switched to Carpentry due to the other students, and personal preference.
I was also a volunteer for the gameroom.
And among my complaints, is One science teacher "Mr. Nine".
The high school class for science, gave me the "option" to choose between "space science", and "physics". I chose "physics".
Mr. Nine, said that I wouldn't be able to pass physics, because it's "too hard", but how the class is supposed to work, is that you take an entrance test to see where you are academically, and if you pass, then you get an instant grade for the subject.
But if you don't pass, you get to take courses.
I wanted the courses, because I wanted to study Physics. But Mr. Nine, said "No" you can not take physics.
I demanded to see the principal, and she sided with Mr. Nine, stating that I can either "take space science" or get out of the class.
Which All I wanted, was to learn.
And Mr. Nine, took that away from me.
Space science, and Physics are not the same.
And they only converge when you get into Astrophysics, and that's not a job corps class, that's a college level class.
Then, I go into the group of students to go take college classes, and I was also accepted into the advanced trade class but. Before I get to take my S.A.T, a new student in my dorm falsely accuses me, and I get Terminated.
And from there I wound up homeless for 6 monthes.
They took away my advance trade class, they take away my college course, all because some 16 year old girl lied about me.
And this is the true sadness about job corps.
I hope it gets shut down before it ruins more peoples lives.

Job Corps in general is what you make of it. If you keep your nose clean, stay in your lane, and focus on your studies and your success, I can promise you that Job Corps is going to be an amazing experience. I was in Gary Job Corps from 2014-2015 doing volunteer work in the Game Room. It was one of the best experiences working I ever had. My worst day working in the Game Room can be compared to some of my best days working in other jobs.
Majority of the staff cares a lot about the students and genuinely do want to see all of the students succeed. Unfortunately, there are students and faculty that make the experience difficult. But at the end of the day, Job Corps is a good opportunity for people who WANT to change their life for the better but lack the means to get to it.

We were assured this would be a safe haven where our son could complete his education and get training for a future career. Instead, our son was attacked with an iron pipe in his dorm room by one of his roommates. He is now blind in one eye. He will need reconstructive surgery to fix the deformity due to the broken bones on the left side of his face. Now, he has to learn how to live with this disability. Think long and hard before sending your kids here. I told my son, "Stay focused on your goals", "Keep out of trouble", "Don't draw attention to yourself." He was proud to be doing well for himself. It wasn't enough. Gary Job Corps Center was not a safe place for my son, nor will it be for yours.

You people have me beyond pissed, I sent my daughter there for a secure safe place to go to school since our home flooded and burned during Harvey. I've called you people numerous times about other students stealing my daughters only possessions since the storm. We lost every single thing, either the students who stole from her or your corporation needs to replace my daughters things. Food, hygiene and clothes are all we have and its not acceptable for this to keep going on. I will keep climbing the chain of command until the issue is resolved.

A fair deal. You get a roof over your head, three meals a day, and some basic job training. Went there from late 2008 to early 2010 and graduated with several forklift certifications and the G.E.D. I should have gotten years ago when I dropped outta high school. They offer academic courses too if you can't earn your G.E.D. yet.

The pictures provided is deffinately not correct. All rooms including new dorms get 4 beds a room, has bug/roaches, little desk between lockers/closets, white and dirty rooms. Bugs and plastic found in food. Males going into females room and females going to males room doing the dirty. Staff let's you smoke weed no control, bullying happens all the time with no consequences. Staff bullies as well and if you get jumped or someone hits you, you get terminated as well. No supervison, people get pregnant all the time, people have commited suicide all the time no matter what they tell you. Horrible place overall. But you get paid and get 1,000 dollars when you graduate

I volunteered as a Tour Guide to the visitors and I worked for the cafeteria and also as a Teacher's Aide. I had my good times and my bad times. Is about making it work for you I always stood away from the trouble makers. I had many friends so is not like you have to be alone just got to know you there to learn a trade and get your GED and better your life go to college or go in to the service focus on that and you won't go wrong..

Worst place ever.....it s cold and kids are texting out saying their dorms are freezing. They have no heating or they just not turning it on for them...like they are being punished and they have sewer backup issues in my sons dorm. They also have all these ghetto people working in there with NO people skills, disrespectful and just the worst. Our kids walk around in the heat and rain while security laughs at them while riding their golf carts. All of this is unacceptable as a mother.....I did not send my son to prison or away to be punished. They sure painted a very pretty picture when my kids signed up but far from what they promised. So disappointed

I volunteered to go to Gary. New Orleans in the 90s only offered DEATH or Jail, I played around the first 6mo running the book and selling liquor, the boot was strong up there and they had LA Gangs. Nevertheless I Got a driving license,GED and A trade that I later on mastered and started a company. The message is stay focused on you and you'll get the tools you need to survive.PS I kept my points up in Dorm #16 back then it was a fresh/new honor dorm.the mess hall had 4 sides the red room had the best food the Blue room had sloppy food, lol I'm sorry to hear the food is bad.Only thing I regret is leaving a beautiful woman from the Philippines she was so sweet, Damm I still think about her.

Went here couple months after katrina. I made the most amazing friends. Do the work don't get caught up in the bull and you can do it. When I was there the biggest problem was after katrina they moved everyone from Louisiana job corps to here and the one in Louisiana was full of criminals and thugs. Don'the know how it is now. But stay clear of the bull and do ur studies. I don't know if they still have where u go during the day and leave but if they do and u have family in San Marcos so that. Cause it's the after lessons where trouble brews. The food stinks but what do you expect from a place that's run by the prison. System. They served pigs feet a few times I was there. But over all its a place to get ur life together if it's not together

An 18 yr old, left the fast lane life of Los Angeles to spend two years at Gary, 1965-67. Wow! You might be thinking, yes it was a long time ago (73 yrs old now). Gary was quite different back then, military barracks, bunks and lockers. It was my first step to turning my life around. It was difficult but it helped to learn how to cope and interact with others. I joined the Army shortly after graduating. The skills acquired at Gary helped with my working life and even helped with what the Army life would bring my way, including one year in Vietnam. Don't give up or give in you wonderful young people.
