Perfect for dinner spot before watching a show at the Fox theater. It's trendy but not over the top hip.The drinks are excellent and the food is nothing to complain about. The only problem that you'll have is with reservation. Most likely the prime time slots on a show night will be taken up. But if you don't care for the opening bands, then it should be much easier (reservation at 7:30pm - walk across to see the headline by 9pm).

A throwback to an earlier era with its beautiful art deco design, dim lighting, and white tablecloths, this place never disappoints me. Cocktails and wine selection are great, and the food is even better. Had a pork chop that blew me away, perfectly charred and smokey on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. Come to think of it, that kind of describes Flora as well.

This is my 3rd time visiting this restaurant, and to say I was always satisfied would be an understatement.. Located in Jack London Square, this place is sure to please. If you choose not to make a reservation, one of their delicious cocktails will make the wait worth your while.

Pros:

Pros:
- chicken and waffles (juicy chicken, decent cornmeal waffle)
- grits (so creamy!)
- French press (one of the best restaurant coffees of my life)
- classy & trendy ambiance

Cons:
- I think I've been here too many times

Bottom line: Go for brunch! I bring everyone to Flora because of their diverse menu options.

A near perfect evening: expertly prepared salad starter, fish main, and bottle of wine at Fauna, followed by an apres dinner dealer's choice cocktail at sister bar Fauna. Impeccable service and the decor fits with the names - expect funky botanicals and woodland creatures.

They make a very tasty burger and peach cobbler here, but what I like about them the most are the great cocktails that they've introduced me to, my favorite being the salt and pepper. I've since ordered it at other places, but no one makes it as well as them. This is one of my favorite spots to grab a drink and apps before a show at The Fox.

Gentrification seems unavoidable at every turn in the Bay Area, and this "hip" little spot seems to play into the "you get what you pay for" approach quite well. Unfortunately, at $20, brunch left me rather unsatisfied. Having the hash, a dish expected to overcompensate, I was served about 8 ounces of food with one halved cherry tomato, one sliced green bean, four small pieces of diced potatoes, and a mix of meat and corn. While the flavor was impressive, I finished long before my friends. I was hoping the iced Americano, an enjoyable drink here, would curb my appetite, but alas, I'm at the Starbucks down the street having an iced coffee and croissant to fill the void.

One of the many joys of brunch is alcohol, and while I hear the drinks are tasty here, I couldn't bring myself to pay $11 for a house mimosa. As for my friends, the other dishes on the table, which were less expensive, were much better-received. Also, the service was on point; all staff were both courteous and efficient. I'd just suggest asking some questions before ordering to get a better feel for the chef's interpretations.

Being a vegetarian, it's hard for a place which only has one vegetarian entree to get more then a 'good' rating, but don't get me wrong, they're food is good. I just like to have a little more selection. They were able to accommodate my onion intolerance which some restaurants aren't able to do at all.

Their cocktails are AMAZING! The location is great. We went to a concert at the Fox Theater afterwards which is right across the street.

Porkchop dish was excellent! Cocktails are very highbrow, perhaps meant to be enjoyed on their own or perhaps as an aperitif as opposed to being paired with a porkchop...Tried the "Alameda made with Escubar liqueur".. Anywhoo...after the meal, went next door to FAUNA (Flora&Fauna-get it?) ... AWESOME STAFF, lowbrow drankin if you request it, cool music, interesting people who actually interact with whom ever enters!. I'll be back! Flora - to see what's new on the menu, and to choose another cocktail adventure.

The visit there was for a special event: the Art Deco Society of California Members' Appreciation Party. What a great place to have the party: the exterior and interior is very "Art Deco" in its architecture and interior design. The staff was excellent: very friendly, efficient, and courteous; made all us members feel wanted there. We enjoyed ourselves there. I would really like to go here on a "regular" occasion sometime.

Impossible to get a seat most of the time. Don't even try dinner before even a medium sized concert at the Fox without reservations well in advance.

First meal, at the bar, was amazing and memorable. Second meal, sitting down, we felt a bit like second class citizens, and the food was solid if unmemorable. Highly proficient bartenders.

I ate at Flora during brunch. The food and service were both good, however brunch on the weekends lasts until 2:30 so if you don't feel like breakfasty food, your selection will be slim.

I had the burger. It was a no frills burger but cooked well (as in correctly and NOT doneness). The fries were crispy. No complaints there. I ordered a ginger ale and it came in a half size bottle - not what I was expecting.

My wife order the gnocchi. It was fluffy and the eggs were velvety. She really enjoyed it.

Brunch for 2 came out to be $45 pre-tip. Overall a good place to eat, but it has a limited selection of items and is a little pricier than your average brunch place. If it has what you want then the slightly higher price is worth it. I have a feeling I would enjoy the dinner menu a bit more. Until then.

I never miss an opportunity to stop in to Flora for for a cocktail or a bite. I'm glad to see that Carter Beats the Devil is still on their menu! They are the perfect dining spot before a show at the Uptown, the Fox or the Paramount.

After months of trying to get a reservation we were excited to take our clients to Wood Tavern. All were filled with anticipation. The location and ambiance were wonderful. We enjoyed the bustle of a lot of people in a small restaurant. It was packed - even the bar was elbow to elbow with people eating.

This is a gem all around. To start the service is attentive in just the right amounts. They are friendly and know their menu well to be able to make suggestions.

I didn't get to try the cocktails but they looked great and the people drinking them really seemed to be enjoying them. The food was where everything came together. We tried almost all the appetizers. Some had a kick but not too much, others had a citrus focus. They use fruit as a sweetener for the shrimp avocado. The beansprouts were crispy on the outside like they'd been tanned on a tropical beach all day but firm on the inside. They had a little kick that was just right. The Crab cakes tasted like they used fresh crabs and the tarter sauce that came with it was a little spicy too which was with the accompanying salad.

Lastly, the ambiance was just the right amount of Oakland. There wasn't a stuffy feeling about the place. It was complemented by the staff which all had their own look. The experience was really nice and I'm sure this will start to be one of our go to restaurants.

Had a disappointing brunch here over the weekend. The only real highlights were the music playlist and the lemonade.

First, my party sat and watched as servers ignored our table for too long, given that the restaurant was barely half full. (We were apologized to about 3-4 times for that.) Then the food wasn't worth the cost. I had a smoked trout hash that left my mouth feeling and tasting like the inside of a BBQ grill until I thoroughly brushed my teeth. My partner had scrambled eggs and a little salad that he didn't even finish. Both serving sizes were abysmal. I'm sad to say I won't return for the food/sit down experience. They have a bar next door that might be better, though!

Keeping with the hipster vibe of Oakland, Flora st...

Keeping with the hipster vibe of Oakland, Flora struck me as a restaurant trying to fuse all sorts of strange flavors together into something that is supposed to be novel and interesting. What resulted was probably novel, but not very good or interesting. We got the focaccia and fried chickpeas for an appetizer. The focaccia was really basic bread covered in a shredded cheese like Romano or Parmesan and included just two slices. So, $6 for two slices of average bread. The chickpeas we're good with a smoky flavor and just a hint of heat. I then ordered the pork sausage filled cabbage. It came with a side of a potato mash (I think). The potatoes had no real flavor except for the dollop of mustard seed dropped in the middle. The sausage was mild and lacked flavor, which the cabbage didn't fix. Again, the dollop of mustard seeds I'm guessing was designed to help with this but didn't. All of this was served in a bowl with just a little broth, which ended up watering down the potatoes so they turned into a soup. Again, the goal was, I'm guessing, a fusion of sorts. The result was bland food that left me feeling like I overpaid and missed what could have been a culinary experience. Perhaps the other items on the menu are better. Service was good.

Great brunch! Apparently they have a great chicken and waffles dish (my favorite) but today I had the shrimp and grits which was phenomenal. My friend had the polenta with braised pork and a poached egg - put an egg on it style - although initially the egg was just fried so I ordered her the poached egg. Once that was added, it was perfection she said - she's in culinary school and they just finished their 'egg week'. This is a great date spot also with great mood lighting!

Popped in for lunch without a reservation and sat at the bar (after 25 minute wait). This is a popular place for good reason! Food was absolutely delicious - quality ingredients, perfect preparation, delicious and interesting combinations. Service was absolutely perfect - made us feel like we were regulars.

Our evening at Flora was great. I'd heard they have tasty cocktails so I was set on trying one. The only problem was that I didn't know half the ingredients listed in the cocktail menu. When our waitress came to take our drink order I asked her if she could help me find a cocktail I'd like. I told her I don't drink gin and that I normally order Jack and Diet. With just the information she immediately had a suggestion for me and when the drink came I was not disappointed. It was delicious.

For our starter we had the slow roasted pork ribs where were fall-off-the-bone tender but had a great crunch on the outside reminding me of crackling in England. My husband had the pork loin as a main dish which was a large cut of pork, but very juicy. I had the burger with cheese which had great flavor from the caramelized onions in the patty. I also really enjoyed the blue cheese salad that accompanied the burger which I used as a topping.

For dessert we had the caramel pudding. It was fabulous and worth every calorie. The consistency was nice and thick and the flavor was rich, but not too sweet. The unsweetened (or lightly sweetened) whip cream and season on top balanced the pudding perfectly.

Overall it was a fantastic meal and we'd definitely go back.

Flora was nice for breakfast. Expect a focused menu meaning there is a short list of choices on the menu rather than a long list of choices. It was good. It's a place for adults not young kids.

Regrettably, what has been our favorite restaurant...

Regrettably, what has been our favorite restaurant in Oakland has let us down, badly. We got off to a weak start when we arrived a few minutes after 10:00 for our brunch reservation, and in spite of us trying the door gingerly, and being unavoidably obvious in the cold wind outside, none of the staff inside would make eye contact, or, needless to add, unlock the door, despite it being several minutes past opening time. No emergency inside - just a host who would rather exercise his little measure of power than be gracious.

We asked for a booth, and were given the excuse that the booth the host pointed to was reserved for a party of 5. Moments later we look up to discover the next party, also 3, were seated ... in the corner booth this slippery host slyly avoided referencing, despite it being the more obvious choice for our group of 3. I well understand that not every request can be met, but it is not acceptable for the host in a fine dining restaurant to treat his patrons with deceitful condescension. Between pretending not to see us outside in the cold, and that ridiculous run around about a booth, the fellow went a long way to souring the experience.

Cutting to the food, it was mediocre.

Between us we had fried chicken and waffle, steak and egg sandwich, and crab cakes benedict. The chicken was greasy and slimy, and rather than a breast it was a badly deboned thigh with a lot of fat attached. If you're only getting one piece, I expect a breast, or at least for the menu to indicate what part is on its way. The waffle was reasonably good, and the maple butter quite tasty, but on balance, poor.

Steak and egg sandwich was very tasty, but quite scant on the steak. As it was served on a very large (tasty) roll, the shortage of beef was even more pronounced, with a pretty hefty imbalance of protein to carb, making the sandwich rather disappointing.

Crab cakes benedict, had good moments -the hollandaise was very good, the eggs decently poached, but the crab cakes themselves smelled badly of fish, suggesting the crab was less than fresh. Served on a biscuit - not my preference, but that's just me. Again, on balance, poor.

Coffee - also not to our liking. Advertised as 16 oz, I'm pretty sure there was not much more than 10 oz of actual beverage in there, as we only managed to get 2 small muddy cups of not very good tasting coffee out of the french press.

It's a shame, because we have enjoyed spending our birthday at Flora for several years, and it had been our go to choice for fine dining in the east bay. After this experience, we'll have to reconsider that.
