With only 25 minutes to curtain up we arrived hopefully at the Festival Theatre Cafe in the foyer asking if there was anyway they'd be able to feed and water us pre-show. No problem was the reply with advice to go for the light dishes as they'd be quickest. We decided almost instantly and as our pints of lager and pots of tea hit our table they were taking the food order and assuring us we'd be sorted out in time.
I love Festival Theatre, the cafe looks right out onto the South Bridge and the bustle of Edinburgh walks by right there in front of you. The Big Red Tour Buses full of tourists waving into the crowds will paint a smile on the face of even the sternest coffee drinker. It is simply a magical place.
True to their word we were paying the bill as last call outs came out over the foyer and we made our way up the stairs and into our seats for Singing Into The Rain. Although a modern theatre (signs celebrating 20 years hung outside in the March rain), there is an old world class to the red and gold decor of the main auditorium. The bonus is though, that the seating is comfortable and well spaced. We were last minute stalls, and from the online booking I thought we were going to be in a neck-craning corner position. Not so, we had an amazing view of the stage and from where I was sitting it looked like you'd have been happy wherever you were.
I have signed up to the Festival Theatre mailing list on the strength of the cafe's homemade hummus and Cosmo's tap dancing. A perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
