Family & Children's Service of Ithaca Review

I became a patient after my husband passed after a tough fight with cancer. My counselor has been amazing and although my journey has been difficult and slower than i anticipated, it has been a positive and healing one. I would definitely recommend Family & Childrens for anyone going through life, no matter where there journey has taken them.

Get set up with counselor told in network for my insurance. After two visits says not in network. Poorly run.

Better than nothing, but can t really think of many things they do particularly well within their practice. Their prescribers are negligent at worst and awkward at best.

My therapist didn't help at all. I did get meds I needed though.

The waitlist for seeing a therapist at this practice is very long - I waited about two or three months until I was given a standing-spot with a therapist. I do like my therapist, she does help with my current problems and I feel as if I have made a lot of progress. However, the fact that you are only permitted to see your therapist for 50-minutes a week is difficult for those who might need more intense care. After about a month / two months of seeing this therapist, my therapist luckily was able to secure me a spot with Dr. Barbara Woods, a practicing prescriber at F&CS. I absolutely love Dr. Woods, she is professional but caring and has an expertise way above any other psychiatrist I have seen in Ithaca. However, I am aware that other psychiatrists such as Dr. Lowrey practice here, who I had the displeasure of seeing back at Ithaca College when he practiced part-time there. I'm not sure if maybe it was the change of office that caused this, but the sessions I had with him were awful. I felt like a lab-rat, he appeared to have no knowledge on how to practice psychiatry, and I ended the sessions pretty much immediately, knowing that they were actually causing more damage than previously. I've spoken with multiple other people who have seen Dr. Lowrey, and all of their opinions are the same. Definitely depends on what therapist / psychiatrist you are paired with, but if you think you'd be all set up with a once-a-week appointment then definitely give this place a try, it's one of the only quality places for mental health care in Ithaca.

Wonderful mental services for all levels of economic standings for the public. Mental health is important! Get there and work and learn to manage your problems.
