My favorite place to visit in Seattle. The Marvel area was jaw dropping, I took so many pictures and I bragged to everyone. I'm a big grunge music fan so the Nirvana and Pearl Jam sections were speechless. This is a must for anyone that is in to music.

I was doing an event here with my business for Facebook, the customer service from everyone was great. I was so busy, I was unable to look around myself. But, I heard it was a great party.
I don't know what Paul Allen is doing but there wasn't much pop, or rock, to be seen. Sure, the exhibition of David Bowie's photographer was well done, but the SF/Star Trek exhibition was, to our surprise, the most enjoyed.
Tremendous exhibition of classic instruments, guitars and band exhibits are phenomenal. The music labs are fantastic, both for advanced and beginners. Video tutorials are amazing. Well worth visiting and you must see the Guitarnado. Three stories tall!!!
MoPoP goes above and beyond! You won't find paintings hanging on whitewashed gallery walls here (not that there's anything wrong with that). This museum immerses you fully in whatever the world of each exhibition. For instance, a horror movie exhibit is set up to make you feel like you are walking through an actual horror movie. Same goes for fantasy and sci-fi exhibits. Every inch of gallery space is transformed into a new world. It is impossible to get bored here.
The exhibits that were on feature here on our visit were centered around Horror movies and the Seattle grunge music scene of the 90's. The layout and flow was superb and the quality of the items on display was very high.
A combination rock and roll and science fiction/fantasy musuem with a rotating roster of exhibits from Star Wars to Star Trek. I keep coming back for more.
The EMP Museum has a great collection of Music memorabilia, as well as memorabilia from a variety of TV and Movie Genres, including Scifi, Fantasy, and Horror.
Marvel convention at the Museum of pop culture was excellent. It had a great historical view of the marvel comics and their origin. The other features were also good and it's worth spending sometime here when you visit Seattle.
I got the city pass at the pier (by the Pike Place Market) and visited the Museum of Pop Culture among other sights around Seattle. It's quite easy to find being nestled under/beside the Space Needle. The building is fascinatingly beautiful outside as well. You can not miss it! This place is PERFECT for a music lover/fanatic. There's even a place here where you can record your OWN music, learn and play guitar, keyboard, etc... Do vocals in a recording booth, etc. Kids will LOVE this place. There's a place for Nintendo in there too that's included with admission cost (and a Muppets area too! but that costs extra). There's historical instruments owned/played by famous musicians as well. Highly recommend you give this place a visit yourself! I wasn't sure what to expect to be honest but I was pleasantly surprised! If you do the city pass this place is included with aquarium, space Needle, etc. and VERY well worth the cost! I'm a Floridian and will be back to Seattle.... with a visit to the MoPop building again too!
Upon walking in and having to use the restroom me and my family felt very uncomfortable with how rude one of the security guards were. I definitely did not feel as though we were welcomed. I complained to the manager and he seemed to have no idea what to say or do about it. I will have to say I loved the horror exhibit but all together wasnt the best experience.
Wonderful, educational, museum. Takes you through the world of music that changed history to classic cinema we ve grown to love. It s Interactive for the whole family! The exhibits change so be sure to look up what s happening during your time in Seattle!
Amazing museum, loved the architecture, marvel special exhibi, the sky church and just about eveything else inside. The Holodrome, which was a separately ticketed event was very forgettable though: a basic VR headset provides a far more immersive experience.
Absolutely a place to go. Many interesting shows. The history of guitars, music labs (where you can learn, or try to learn, play guitar, drums, piano or sing) the stories of video games, the Seattle NFL team lounge and watch the super bowl is Pretty impressive.
The museum is very interesting although I have been quite bored on the musicians' floor. The best thing about the museum is the MusicLab where you can play any instrument or record songs with a band.
I thought this was called something else , like experience music project ? I don't know if I'm reviewing the right place. But who cares if it has to do with music its all good .
Incredibly interactive and very interesting museum that's more of a well thought out hangout and fun spot than a traditional museum. If I were a Seattle local, I would get a membership for sure!
Ok, apparently we are in the minority. Incredible building suggested a special experience. Not so much. Dim lighting but lots of text to read ( not sure if there's an audio guide if you don't read Engish). Artifacts, sure, but not enough to warrant $30. Add some docents, or guides with performance skills to engage viewers. Make it so we can play back up for Prince. As much thought that went into outside should have gone into the inside. (Perhaps we've been spoiled by great museums. This could be one, but not there yet.)
I'll start by saying MoPop is pretty cool with it's interactive music section, creepy sci fi/horror, indy games and some of the huge rotating shows (star wars, marvel, etc). They also screen cool movies and occasionally host live music events. The service is really good and I love the wacky FG designed building.
Why 2 stars? Because as a local I've been here a lot and for what they charge to get in coupled with how much money backs this place they could do way, way better.
The indy game room will have controllers that are broken or games that freeze and the content could rotate more. I mean, isn't Paul Allen associated with this place?
In fact everything could use a refresh. After being in Seattle 10 yrs there's too much that hasn't changed at all. In general things could be more immersive and interactive. They did have a very short AR thing included in the Marvel show but again, take it further please.
How about the entire wall in the jam rooms is a flat panel that displays a huge crowd cheering or footage of your favorite Rock star in the studio next to you? How about an ever changing haunted house linked up to the horror section with state of the art effects??
I love ya EMP, oops, I mean MoPop...but please become what you COULD be.
If you are remotely interested in music, fantasy, sci-fi or pop culture, you will enjoy it. If you're into rock, Hendrix, Bowie - you will love it!! You can catch Hendrix's full Woodstock concert in the theatre. Unfortunately the Nirvana exhibit was on tour but the museum is still very worthwile regardless!
I went here for a field trip and had an outstanding time. I loved it! There's so much to see and do. There's something for almost everyone. I loved the music rooms the most
Great place to check out during a rainy day. The exhibits were filled with information and interactive. At the time of this review there was a Jimi Hendrix exhibit with articles, writings and unreleased songs written by the artist. Great piece of modern history all in all.
Amazing building and venue. It basically consist of two parts: (1) Pop music and (2) SCI-FI and Fantasy. Especially the pop-part we very much enjoyed! The location is very easy to get to. We recommend the City-pass that also includes the Needle.
1995 I went to the Pearl Jam concert at the stadium next door. 24 years later my trip back there is to a museum that recognizes the role this band played in music..... awesome!
Went here as part of the city pass. This museum is absolutely amazing! This is coming from somebody that doesn't tend to rate things highly. The exhibits are highly appealing and did a great job combining visual and auditory senses. I was enjoying exhibits on musicians/bands that I don't really like...that's how well it was put together.
The music rooms were...well I couldn't believe them. When I went they were very empty. You could go in some rooms and just jam for 10 minutes on drums, guitars, keyboards, etc. Other rooms specialized in one instrument, or you could use a microphone and practice vocals. What a toy! The best part was the rooms are soundproof, so no need to feel embarrassed!
The scifi was eh. I am fairly big into Star Trek, and they had some interesting stuff there, but outside of one or two neat exhibits, it seemed a bit of an after thought. But it hardly matters, because the rest of the museum is just that awesome.
This seems like a great museum for people in their 20s and 30s, probably good for teens too, and plenty of the older crowd as well..... I know my 63 year old pop would have loved it too. You could easily spend a full day at this museum.
Overall I really enjoyed it. Jim Henson exhibit was amazing, Seahawks room is cool, history of guitar is fascinating. I personally was disappointed in the video game part. There's not much to it. David Bowie exhibit was fine but limited. Mainly just a bunch of pictures of him between 71 - 73. Still, worth the cost of admission.
This was a terrific trip, the entire family form 11-50 enjoyed every part of the museum. The tornado of musical instruments was a sight to behold. The collections from the movies was really cool. We enjoyed it so much we plan to visit the EMP again. Let the adventure begin.
