This is by far the worst embassy I have been to and I have been to quite a few. The staff is extremely rude, arrogant and inefficient. Not only will they demean and dismiss you, they will make you feel like a criminal in 2 seconds flat.

Obtaining a visa was pleasant and easy. Monsieur S. Fortune, the delightful security officer at the entrance was extremely helpful! I was missing one clearance for my Visa, and he directed me to the right office. The Consulate is now requiring an FBI Clearance, (this was not mentioned on the internet instructions I downloaded for my long term stay Visa so be sure you get this before you take in your paperwork). When I returned with my clearance two days later, Mr. Fortune remembered me, greeted me, and then sent me off with good wishes. A wonderful experience .... now ... off to France!

I agree it s difficult to get dates for the visa but I would give details about the appointment day. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. If you have the documents in place you will be completing the entire process in 30 minutes. Few points to take care of:
1) Keep your documents in a systematic manner as mentioned in the French consulate website.
2) Make sure your hotel reservations have your name on it.
3) Employment letter should precisely have the leave approval for the days you will be traveling (for tourist visa)
4) Your medical insurance should have the exact amount of coverage provided.

After reading so many reviews, I went into the consulate expecting to be yelled at and turned away for not having the right documents.. I was pleasantly surprised, however at the ease at which everything went. Everyone there was helpful, patient, and very understanding. If you go there with everything you can possibly think of plus copies, and are patient and respectful of the staff, they in turn are respectful and helpful to you, in my experience.

Let's start with 1 thing; if you have ALL the documents that they have listed on their website you should be good for the VISA process! Nobody is rude! They are very clear while giving instructions. They ask most of the documents from the list and it will be easier if you keep them in the same order as mentioned on the website. Airbnb bookings work, if you are looking for Schengen visa for toursim.

Went today for a passport without appointment. The receptionist, a woman treated us with disrespect and in a very bad tone saying it was not possible to help or even try to book an appointment for another day. We never raise our voice but just ask to treat us well. She asked the security to eject us with our kids without having done anything wrong. She denied us to see a supervisor. It is about the way she handled and not the fact to be able to do or not a passport. The security garde was also rude. We have never seen before such a rude and unpolite receptionnist. With so many educated people in france, they should not give public jobs those type of unprofessional people.

The good: Surprisingly nice people! Very calm, patient, respectful and friendly.
The bad: The room is claustrophobic, has low ceilings so it gets really noisy, the windows have bars as if you're in jail and the service is slow (~2hrs for getting a tourist visa)

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. I would recommend traveling to Boston or DC and going the consulate or embassy there.

I was horrified about how rude the people are who work in the French Consulate of New York. From the aggressive and ill mannered security guard to the hot headed and vile consulate woman, the experience was shocking.

The security guard was very short with me and refused to allow my mother to stand in the building at all. He closed the door in her face as I was saying goodbye to her. He touched all of my belongings and even pressed buttons on my phone to make sure it was off. He demanded to see my paper work and even though I had everything said I was missing a page and should come back another day. I insisted that I wasn't missing a page after which he let me through, but said he was confident that the French consulate workers would turn me away.

When I finally got to the room where I could get my visa it was packed. A small stuffy room with 35 or so chairs was totally full. It was completely madness. Even before I went up to the counter I could hear one woman in particular screaming at several different people for a misaligned staple or a photo that was too small. There was one American woman there was applying for something or other that required her to pay 89 USD. The woman had 90 USD but the french consulate worker refused to accept her payment unless it was exact change. She would have to book another appointment to do this even though she already had her documents in place. Luckily, every one in the waiting room had her the nasty woman yell at her and offered her money so she could pay the exact amount.

When it was my turn I got yelled out for having a small mark on one of the papers from where the staple had been, missing a copy of one paper, and looking at the camera the wrong way.

There is no sense of discretion or confidentiality at the Consulate. They seem to yell at everyone so the people in the waiting room can pretty easily understand everything being said to every person.

In reading other posts the common thread seems to be the aggressive security guard and (although all of the staff is pretty rude) that one woman in particular who is absolutely wretched. I hope (but highly doubt) that this will one day be taken into consideration by the french government and both will be fired.

I got my passport renewed yesterday. 5 stars to Pierre who was kind, patient, professional, helpful in every way, and full of good energy. He truly made my day!

However, the welcome troupe was a different story. I got yelled at by the security guard for being a few minutes early (?!), and the first woman who hosted me was condescending, rude, unhelpful the typical fonctionnaire who hates her job. Try to get Pierre.

Nastiest people ever, unhelpful, aloof. I guess they are all thinking about wine, baguettes and cheese, continuously. Trying to renew my passport for years. It's one issue after other. Since the last one I have was done in Spain, suggesting me to call there to get a new one. Their hours are 10am to 1pm same as here in New York. Meaning I have to call them between 4 and 7am; maybe possible for someone else, but not me. My grandfather fought for the resistance during WWII and retired as a gendarmery general. If he fought for people like the ones working in this place, I'm sure he did it in vain. In Spain, every Christmas season he would go to the French embassy in Madrid, near the new city hall building (former palace of communications) be received by the ambassador himself and wish each other season greetings. Since I'm busy all the time, I never had a chance before, to give them a piece of my mind nor ever call the consulate in Madrid. Nothing I wrote here is of my invention. 100% truth and real.

Had a fabulous experience at the consulate getting a Visa for my Cuban passport. The ladies were helpful, friendly and really made it such a positive experience. It certainly was much better than it was in previous years. The security guard was also just great. He was such a nice man. Very nice job done by all at the Consulate.

Online appointment system SUCKS! Never any appointments available - They should hire more staff. Their solution is to "Keep checking. Appointments get canceled." Of course...I have all the time to keep doing this. Consulate does not take any walk-ins. Was planning on traveling in 3 weeks and seems impossible to do.

Guess I won't go to France. peace out!

Just had such a helpful conversation with a lady at the consulate (call was today 9.30.20 at 3pm) who helped me greatly with explaining the passport application process for me and how to obtain a livre de famille for my newborn son. It was complicated but she knew her stuff and she was very kind.

I went there twice to get a long stay student visa. I had the man at screen 2, and he was polite. He photocopied my bank statement when I realized that I hadn't brought a copy. The process was very simple; although I waited in the waiting room for about an hour both times, this isn't so bad for a consulate. Just bring a book. It's very unusual that you can pay in cash here, but you can. Note that it must be exact change.

I was nervous about my appointment, but there was no need to be. When the security guard saw how nervous I was, he fist bumped me and advised me to drink water before going upstairs! Very kind.

I talked to 3 people there and they were all assholes, so rude I had $100. She said I'm not taking that bill and it's not my problem how you get exact change but that's what I need, hurry up and figure it out, so I had to ask people in the waiting if they have change, luckily they did, complete assholes. And then throwing me my documents back they were really rude I was unbelievable I felt like crying, that's how bad it was.
Yelling at me because I forgot to make a copy of the tickets they didn't want the originals. I apologized and said I didn't realize and then he keep yelling at me. They were such assholes. The worst place ever in NYC. No respect at all..
I lost my passion to go to Paris.

The staff are really courteous and make sure you have a smooth process. The security guard Stephen is the most impressive of all. He sees to it that you remain calm and helps you out no matter what the situation is. If there's some issue with your documents or the appointment timing, he gives you really wise suggestions and they will most certainly work !
The visa officials are quick and polite as well. Most of the staff at the consulate are patient.

See to it that you have all the required documents and you'll definitely have a nice visit there, with no stress at all.

To start with the recording indicate the consulate hours 2PM to 5PM however until 2:40PM you do not get any kind of answer. The phone will ring between 10 to 15 times and still nobody will answer. It almost seem like a competition to "who will be annoyed enough by the rings to pick up the phone" The staff is for most of them very RUDE and just reconfirm the reputation of French people being rude. The receptionists beside being rude do not give you the right information and always seem "way too busy to help you". You get the general feeling that you are annoying them by coming there. It is an negative experience to go there and the French community to whom I belong avoid it as much as possible. You would think that representing France in New-York City the general attitude would be polite, with a certain class and welcoming but that is far from it.

worst experience ever with a lady??? who was rude with my unique son, he didn't dare to write this review but i will he went to apply for a schengen visa and he was denied because they said that his passport was expired something that it wasn't true because for my embassy this one is ok until 2015 but they said no and he had to lost his trip with his friends from the school in his last year of senior Thank you so much France people for this experience we won't return back in our lives to your embassy, just in case he didn't want to stay ilegal or live up there he just wanted to spend his last year of school with his friends in your country, he lives in USA and he is a permanent resident of this wonderful country and just to let you know he has disability learning and speech delay and basically when many doctors told him that he would never go to university he is enroll now to study in a college so my husband an I as an award to him decided to pay for this trip with his friends from the school to France and Spain unfortunately the first country that they would arrive would be France i wish they could have arrived to Spain first because this issue would never have happened with the embassy of Spain. what you guys did with him was not human

I cannot express how disappointed I am for the consulate. It's super low efficient and people working at the visa section were super mean. Both ladies at the counter were basically yelling and screaming to visa applicants. I felt extremely bad for an old Japanese lady who had trouble understanding the thick French accent. She got yelled at because she was too slow. It was just too uncomfortable to watch.

I'm a student that will be studying all of next ye...

I'm a student that will be studying all of next year in France and applying for the long sejour visa for students. Therefore, I can't speak for other visa situations, but I had a fine experience at the visa office. I appeared at the office precisely at my appointment time, 9:00am, and was let in with no problems. Note that for visas you must go to a building around the corner at 10 E 74th St (maybe .1 miles away max). I didn't even have my appointment form, but the man at the entry still let me in with a smiling face after verifying my passport. After going through security, you wait in a room upstairs with your number. Waiting times for this part are highly variable, as your fate is decided with a number given to you at the door. I had number 4 and didn't wait very long. Once called, I went to the window and gave a woman my documents. She was fine with speaking english, was in no way rude, and took my documents in a quick and easy manner. DONT TRY TO PAY WITH CASH. Many people were scrambling for exact change which they require (no more, no less). It's stupid, I know. Just avoid this bureaucratic idiocracy with a credit card, or come with a fifty, a ten and 20 ones to cover for the exchange rate. She then sent me back to the waiting room to wait for my interview. Maybe 20 minutes later I went to another window where I met a smiling frenchman. He saw I spoke french and we continued the interview in french. However, french was in now way a requirement for the interview. He took my documents, fingerprinted me, took a picture, and I was on my way. I even was missing a sheet and he supplied it. He even cracked a joke! Unfortunately, you do have to come back to get your visa. Overall, I met with one fine, straightfaced worker, and one jovial 45 year old guy. Maybe it was because I was a student. Maybe it was because I spoke french (I don't think so). Maybe it was because I was prepared (probably). Maybe it was because it was early in the morning. In any case, I had a fine experience at the consulate.

Tips:
Don't try to pay with cash. Pay with a card.
Have your documents prepared. Follow the instructions closely online for what you should bring. Bring extra copies and more than enough information. They didn't ask me for anything that wasn't on the list.

By the way, the website says no online booking reservations are acceptable but we took our reservations from expedia and we were fine.

I have to say that one of the staff members that stood out to me was Stephen Fortune who is the security guard for the building. Loved his positivity and advice! It was a great way to start my visit to the consulate!

This was my second time getting a Schengen Visa at the French Embassy in NYC. The staff is professional and friendly as long as you are well prepared and have all the required documents. I requested a single entry visa for my 2 week trip and was granted a multiple entry for a slightly extended time, as well as a recommendation on where to visit. Again, as long as you have everything they've requested, you will have a great experience!

I understand the situation now are getting worse globally and hence these people ask for a lot of documents. But if you have everything in order, they try their best to help you too. Though my overall experience with the interviewers...

Though my overall experience with the interviewers was good and they were very helpful with the process, the security guard was the most demeaning, rude and ill-mannered person I have ever come across in my life.

Just because I reached 5 minutes before the 4pm deadline to collect my passport and didn't have a photocopy of a document, I was abused and shouted at by him. Not once did I raise my voice and pleaded with him to help me with the paid photocopy machine which was stuck for some reason (despite me entering the coins in it). Instead of helping me, the guard abused me and asked me to F**K off and get out of the consulate.

I also work at a consulate and we never treat people the way he did. I just calmly told him that I was shocked at their behavior and they would never expect this kind of treatment from someone from my country. To this, the guard shouted again and asked me to get out of the consulate and ridiculed my country in a very demeaning way.

I couldn't believe someone could talk to me in such condescending way and couldn't control my tears. The french are known for their mannerisms and this has left a very bad taste and am little apprehensive about my trip now.

I liked the way this consulate functions. Everyone was friendly and outgoing, eager to give advice or help in any other way. I was especially touched by the helpful security guard, Stephen, who explained to me how to make an additional appointment as early as possible. On the overall, Stephen was very kind and courteous!!

Some advice to others so that you don t have to spend too much time and effort on getting the visa:
1. Despite what they say on the website, there is a copy machine in the office on the first floor, beneath the stairs.
2. If you were not asked for some of the papers (like a hotel reservation), show them all the same. The employees might miss something and then you ll be prompted to come back.

In general, it s useful to closely read the text on the website and follow the advice given this way everything will be fine.

So does being french give you the license to be rude? Just asking since I have been taught that you have to treat everyone with respect.

Screw the French. If this is the attitude they have towards foreign visitors, *#@$ them. The least that they can do is treat people with basic respect and it wont kill them to throw in a "please" or a "Thank you" here and there. In case they haven't realized we are doing them a favor by choosing to visit.

My note to the French, don't give out visas to people outside your country. Live in your shell and enjoy each others rude company. Again like I said, We don't have to visit your country. We choose to have a pleasant vacation experience and that unfortunately starts at your consulate. Don't waste our time if you want to be rude and not treat people like human beings.

My rating: none of the above ratings apply.... My rating would be below "Poor".

I am giving it full stars because the people working at the consulate were very helpful and genuinely seemed to care about the people applying for the documents. The security guard was especially friendly, supportive, and informative; he gave me excellent advice about scheduling my appointment using the online system (look for open appointments from 9-10am every morning).

Just to note. The website was a little confusing because each necessary item was not numbered/bulleted, instead the required items were written one line after another with explanatory text in between. So if you are applying for a long-term visa be sure to carefully read all the text.

I had to visit this consulate for my schengen visa. I was bit nervous and worried, if I had all the right documents but the whole experience was prompt and quick

Right as you enter (after security) , you are assigned a number and wait till you get called. The first Consular at window 1 was really helpful and answered all my queries , which got rid of all the nervousness. She verified all my documents and sent me for fingerprinting and photo.

I was really impressed by how efficient the whole process was.

There is this one lady who seems to just hate..... everyone.... Almost made me not want to go to France anymore. x_x But the security guard and the second woman I talked were super nice!

TIPS:
Read the page of requirements like 10 times.
Make copies of EVERYTHING.
Fill out all the forms BEFORE you get there.
Have all the forms organized. If you take longer than 5 seconds, she'll get irritated with you.... (I know... ridiculous...)
Look for answers for questions online BEFORE your visit. (Every time I tried asking a question, she interrupted me rudely and kept rushing me...)

Overall, the experience was fine and I was in and out in 30 minutes.

Easily the worst consulate I have come across in the world - the VISA appointment making system is dysfunctional and the staff is unhelpful on the phone. I basically decided to not apply for a visa and went to the Norwegian consulate instead. If you have other schengen countries on your itinerary, I highly recommend avoiding this consulate - I wasted 30 days trying to get an appointment here by which time all hotel and flight prices increased a lot. Don't bother visiting - they don't entertain anyone without an appointment and the appointment is impossible.

as a foreign national living in the US, I had to apply for a schengen visa for my trip to France, I am a permanent resident (have my green card) and have been living in the US for 20+ years, but that didn't change the fact that I pretty much had to provide my DNA to get my visa. Pro-tip, book your visa appointment before you book your tickets since the online appointments are always full at least 2 months in advance, your visa is valid for a month which will give you leeway in booking your flight. The wait was about 1-2 hours, which wasn't bad considering, however the employees at the windows were RUDE. I'm used to all government employees being brusque and uncaring (trust me I'm familiar with the DOT), but this was outright RUDE.

I literally got SCREAMED at and called a liar. When I would ask her a question she would either roll her eyes or tell me to stop talking because she hasn't addressed me yet. It was CRAZY...I really don't know how everyone else had pleasant experiences, perhaps they were American... again I am a foreign national living in the US so I don't have a US passport, perhaps the experience would've been different. I will say that the commissioner (Senegalese lady?) was really nice and polite. If this is your first time going, it will be a jarring experience, the only people who weren't appalled by it were the veteran visa applicants. I will also note that my situation was outside the norm, I am a student (don't work) and the trip was being paid for by my boyfriend (different last names) so I went through extra hell. Pro-tip: if you have a financial sponsor, there is a sponsor form you have to fill out and get notarized (on the website, it just says notarized letter).

Jesus Christ! I can't recall the last time I got a treatment as terrible as this. Thanks to the rude staff, France is now the last country I want to travel to.

I prepared all my documents well, but one itinerary doesn't show my my name on it. The visa was denied because of it. I then pleaded to corroborate by showing the email I had in my phone, which was also rejected. Then I was given 10 mins to run in the upper east to find a place to print it, which is impracticable at all.

I have booked and paid all flights and hotels, and now there is no way to make another new appointment. ( oh, yes. You need an appointment several weeks ahead to have the privilege to enjoy the rudeness of those French).

If, I say if most French worked this way, no wonder this country has been falling in global importance.

After reading the horrible reviews I was very nervous about my business with the Consulate. There certainly was no reason for this - I was treated courteously by the entrance staff, very friendly by the lady who notarized the documents I needed for a French court. Having planned on a lengthy visit I found myself back out on the street in 10 Minutes with plenty time to visit the Metropolitan Museum next doors. GREAT EXPERIENCE.

Minister of Public Security Minister Zhao Kezhi, Minister Wang Xiaohong
What does someone have to do with me? I recruit anyone who provokes you and you are tyrannical.
Dear Mr. Xi Jinping, even if he is weaker, is also the head of a country and can not be so humiliated by the Deputy Governor of the Public Security Bureau of Guangdong Province, Li Chunsheng, on the international scene.
In addition, Li Chunsheng, director of the public security department of Guangdong Province, refused to implement national policies and regulations and tried to restore Zhou Yong's resistance at the time.

I have been unsuccessfully trying to schedule an appointment through the consulate's website for the past two days. Every time I attempted to validate the appointment, a pop-up window would appear to say that I was not allowed to book several appointments which suggests that I already had one. I have got in touch with the visa department of the consulate that could not assist me in resolving this mystery because "they were not in charge of the website".
It is a rather frustrating situation as I can not obtain my visa from any other consulate but the one in my jurisdiction which is New York.
I am stilling looking into this bizarre problem and pinning my hopes on the employees of the consulate to solve the riddle.
