It s obvious that the animals at Brandywine are very well cared for by people who treat them as their own. My wife and I adopted a wonderful dog. I believe anyone wanting a dog or cat will find a fine companion at Brandywine.

Everyone was so helpful and we feel like we have support going forward with any questions or issues that arise. The Behaviorist (I believe his name is Zach) answered all of my questions and helped me the next day find the right size crate for our new dog. I can tell all of the employees and volunteers really want what is best for the animals. There is so much activity going on when we visited the shelter and there is so much work to be done for the animals. Everyone who is there seems happy to be working/volunteering at the West Chester location, which says a lot.

Loved that everyone was so excited to hear I was adopting Ginger! She s got so much spunk and is a sweetie. Many volunteers came up to me and said I was getting a shelter favorite dog because she is such a wonderful dog. Shockingly, Ginger knows some basic commands like sit, down, and shake. I m not sure if she learned this from the volunteers or it was from her previous home. Breaks my heart that she was at the SPCA, since May, and was returned once. She s an amazing dog and I am so happy to have her.

We made the hour long drive here 2 days in a row to find the perfect fur addition to our home. The second day we had a person that knew the animals, on the second introduction we had found a match! The boy we took home is wonderful! This is the second pup we got here!

I couldn't say enough great things about BVSPCA. Our family has gotten 3 animals (2 dogs & 1 cat) from their West Chester location and it was a positive experience each time. The people who work and volunteer there truly have a passion for helping these animals, and it shows. Clean facility, friendly staff, and lots of sweet animals looking for their forever family. Highly recommend!!

Great experience - always clean, always easy to see the animals available and the info they have about them. Staff are plenty and always happy and eager to help. The adoption process was quick and simple and it seems that helping the animals is always the most important priority for all involved.

I rescued a dog there about 5 weeks ago. They told us that he was 2, when we took him to the vet the vet said he s probably 10 months. Which I understand is hard to determine. Then after having the dog for a little over a week he went after a visitor. We tried a different approach multiple times and called the SPCA for advice. It took a couple days for them to get back to us after multiple attempt asking for an appointment, which they say they offer when you adopt there. Once we got a behavior appointment, the guy took us to the back room and just played with our dog. He then proceeded to tell us that the dog was doing this with the people that adopted him prior to us. That information would have been very important for us to know before taking him home. We left there feeling like we got no help. The next day our dog went after another person and we made the choice to take him back to the SPCA. This was a very hard decision for us to make. Once we took him to surrender him, a lady grilled us about how we cared for him. She asked us if we even tried to help him. She was very belittling and condescending towards us in a very hard and emotional time. My experience here was awful. I fell in love with a dog who became family and I had to take him back since they didn t give us pertinent information during the adoption process.

I visited this shelter today and it was very clean (for housing so many animals). The staff and volunteers were very friendly as well! As I was walking through the dog sections they continued to take dogs out and walk them making sure they get time out of their kennel.

I was told they had multiple kittens at this location by phone. When I got here 30 minutes later I was then told all of the kittens went that morning. I want a kitten not a cat. I specifically made that point. So I wasted my time and money to dissapoint my daughter. I'll find a more reliable source next time.

Brought home the sweetest little 2 year old kitty from this place and have been in love ever since. We bonded even through her cage and then were able to spend some time together in the playroom. Chose to adopt an adult cat even though they also had some kittens. Best decision. Plenty of beautiful dogs there too who needed a home.

The facility was nice and clean and all the animals looked very well cared for and loved. They even have large enclosures where the animals are taken out to get exercise. The staff was very upfront and knowledgeable about Jimmy s personality and background. The adoption process was seamless.

I highly recommend adopting from the Brandywine Valley SPCA! They take amazing care of their animals and are passionate about finding them loving and caring homes. I adopted my sweet Cora about a month ago and they were so helpful and grateful that I was adopting her. I will continue to support their organization and hope to adopt from them again in the future.

They clearly take care of the animals and their customers as well. We got the sweetest little four month and two day old Black Lab who my daughters named Penny and we could not be happier with our new family member or the family we gained along with her when they helped us bring home our new forever friend! (PS the puppy definitely picked me, I had no choice!)

I contacted them regarding a horrible neglect situation in Toughkenamon involving about 15 cats and kittens and 2 dogs. We do TNR work and wete notified about a lady needing help with her cats as she was overwhelmed. Too make long story short, the cats were starving, the kittens all had serious eye infections. The lady refused to give up her cats to us, we could not see condition of the dogs inside. I contacted PSPCA and BVSPCA. At first, very responsive. Officers called me back and I gave them the info they needed. They said they would be in touch. An officer called back and said they got 8, but had to go back. Of course storms didn't help. I've been leaving messages, asking for updates - no return calls. I finally got through to an officer (ill refrain from naming him), and he told me they were going back out to get the rest. I asked if he would keep me informed, and you might have thought I punched him in the face. It was a quick "huh" and a hang up. First of all, if they don't want the public to follow-up, then don't advertise it! They give you a number to call! Second, we have several cat colonies that we feed. The lady who lived at the place with the cats is moving. If the animals are left behind, someone has to feed them! I alsi offered to help with 1-2 kittens who were not sick on finding other shelter besides the BVSPCA. Do you think anyone would bother to call? Nope. I just wanted to make sure that all the cats were trapped. I'm sure a good many had to be euthanized, but there are people out here willing to adopt once posted. I don't think it's a lot to ask for a lousy status update!!!

Don't use the vet! I brought my 3 cats there on Oct 17th and the vet refused to give me medicine for one of my cats who has been sneezing for weeks. She promised to put a note in the file so if it continued i could call and there would be medicine behind the counter. I was told that as long as it was clear, he didnt need meds. It's still clear near his eyes but when he sneezes, green comes out. All of a sudden they have no note and i need to pay to come in again. I even asked if i could get the meds before i left because my husband yelled at me for not having them and she said she would put a note in the file. Oh and the woman who answers the phone spoke down to me that pets are expensive and you need to be willing to pay for their care. of course you do lady but if your vet did what she was supposed to when she was supposed to i wouldnt have to take another night off from work.

Although the staff seemed to be overwhelmed and short-handed with the number of adoptions going on they remained kind and courteous to every family that was waiting and gave everyone the same level of service. It truly shows that the staff at BVSPCA cares about the animals and making sure everyone has the knowledge they need when bringing home a new furry friend.

It has been such a convuluted experience trying to get a rescue dog. It was so nice to have been given the opportunity to just go in and make an agreement to be a good forever home for a dog and be able to take him home that same day! The staff were friendly, supportive and kind. I would highly recommend!

I adopted a puppy Labor Day weekend. I got her Sunday and from day 1 she has been sick. Sunday night she had me up most of the night with a nasty cough. I couldn't get her to a vet on Monday because of the holiday. I called the SPCA vet in Malvern only to be told it would take an excessively long time to get her in to see their vet and to come in as a walk in. I went there Tuesday and after a wait that was longer than 3 hours a young man who did not identify himself took my pups leash to go back. I don't know if he was a tech, aid or a kennel worker. I got up to follow and was told the dog would be brought back and I was to wait. I always prefer to go with my pets into the exam room when they are being seen by the vet. This keeps my pet calm because they haven't been abandoned by their mommy. Second it ensures the ethical treatment of my pet. We've all heard of the rough treatment some vets inflict on an unruly pet. And last, if I have any questions or comments I can speak to the person treating my pet directly and not made to feel like my questions are unimportant. My pup was brought out to me and I was told to check out at the desk. I was told she had an upper respiratory infection and handed some pills and instructed to give her 1 pill twice a day for 14 days. I had no idea what the medication was or if/when I should see any improvement. I looked up the medication online when I arrived home. I followed the directions also giving her a canine vitamin and a probiotic. After a week she was not showing any improvement. As I did not have any faith or trust in the SPCA clinic vet, I took my pup to my vet. She was diagnosed with broncho trachea something. I was told to continue with the antibiotic and probiotic. After she had the last pill, she was still having breathing problems, so it was back to my vet. She has been seen 3 times in a 2 week period. She had to be xrayed and now she is in a pre pneumonia. She is on a different antibiotic and an anti tussive medication to help with inflammation of her trach and bronchial tubes. I had called the SPCA at least twice, before receiving a call from a Lauren on Thursday. After speaking with her she assured she would make some inquiries with her superior as to what could be done to correct the issue. She also told me I should take my pup to their vet on her recheck visit to be xrayed to make sure her lungs had cleared, instead of returning to my vet. We discussed my concerns and negative experience at their clinic and again assured me that my concerns would be addressed. She also assured me she would call me Friday afternoon. Friday late afternoon I did not hear from Lauren or anyone else, so I called and left a message. Nothing. I called Saturday again requesting a return call because I needed information about setting up the appointment for my puppy. No call back Saturday. Should I take this as a sign they don't care about this situation? I feel as the puppy had been cleared for adoption, it would be a reasonable expectation that I was adopting a healthy animal. I now believe this puppy did not receive adequate medical care because nobody noticed her gagging cough. I was not advised she had any health issue, so again I believed I had chosen a healthy, happy animal...not one that is very sick.

I don t know how they expect anyone to rescue a puppy! 500$ adoption fee for a mix breed puppy rescue! It s sad how a puppy misses out on a loving happy home! I get they need to make money, but are they more about money or finding good homes for rescues! There are prude breads out there for a lot less!

In the past month, THEY HAVE FIRED ALL OF THEIR LO...

In the past month, THEY HAVE FIRED ALL OF THEIR LONGEST TENURED STAFF and kicked out multiple volunteers. Someone who gives their time for free and constantly helps you, and you tell multiple volunteers to never come back? All of the good staff is now let go, and there is no one to let dogs out at all! More days than not, the majority of the dogs don't even get let outside to go to the bathroom, or god forbid get exercise. You would think, as any competent person, you let your dog out when they first wake up from the night. They just let them all pee and poop in their cramped little pen, and don't clean it or let them out. THEIR EMPLOYEES ARE TOLD THAT LETTING THE DOGS OUT IS NOT THEIR RESPONSIBILITY. VOLUNTEERS ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT LET THEM OUT. YOU CAN'T RELY ON VOLUNTEERS TO DO DAILY ACTIVITIES. WORST PART IS VOLUNTEERS AREN'T CLEARED TO HANDLE EVERYONE, SO MOST DOGS NEVER GET OUTSIDE DURING THE DAY.

PLEASE THINK TWICE BEFORE GIVING THESE PEOPLE ANY OF YOUR MONEY. DO YOUR RESEARCH AND YOU WILL SEE THAT THIS PLACE EUTHANIZES MORE ANIMALS THAN MOST VET HOSPITALS.

THEY HAVE FIRED THE LONGEST TENURED EMPLOYEES SO THAT THEY DON'T TELL EVERYONE HOW THEY ACTUALLY OPERATE!

THIS IS A KILL SHELTER TO THE FULLEST.

THEY RECEIVE THOUSANDS OF DONATIONS YEARLY, YET STILL WON'T PAY TO IMPROVE THE FACILITY, AND RELY ON THE GENEROUS PEOPLE WHO ARE BEING MISLEAD EACH AND EVERY DAY

Extremely disheartening. I have just recently been realizing how backwards this place and its management are. Being a non-profit, your goals should have nothing to do with money and solely on the well-being of the dogs. Even if it wasn't a non-profit, you would expect people who are with these animals every day to actually care about them. Yes they recently became no kill status. To them, its all about numbers, and to maintain no kill status, you just have to not kill a certain percentage. So they import dozens of puppies to put their overall numbers up, and then in turn can euthanize more because their percentages will still work out. The worst part is, they euthanize dogs who are sponsored, which means an extremely generous person paid for their adoption fee, so that if someone wanted them, they wouldn't have to pay the fee! A great idea and many people do it. BUT, what they don't tell you is that they probably euthanized that dog, and replaced it with a puppy that they sold for at least $600. So they don't reimburse your sponsor if the dog is put down, or even tell you, because then they would have to allot that sponsor money towards another dog. But they just don't tell you, so that they can double down and make more money. The CEO MAKES OVER 200K A YEAR. All of your donations go straight to his pockets.

It was the best decision that we made for our family. He has fit so well into our home full of girls. When the time comes we will be coming back for future rescue dogs

This is the second animal we ve adopted in the past two years from this SPCA and once again they were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. We ve now adopted both a dog and a cat and had the same great experience with both. I especially appreciate the fact that they are a no kill shelter and the animal you adopt is already up to date on their vaccines and either spayed or neutered. It allows the new owners to focus on bonding with their new pet instead of dealing with all of the initial vet visits. I also think this is much less stress on the animal as well. I would absolutely recommend the SPCA to anyone looking to expand their family with a furry little friend and am forever grateful we did

I adopted a puppy at the mega adoption event held ...

I adopted a puppy at the mega adoption event held at the 23rd street armory on friday December 2,2016. As soon as we got her home we noticed that she wouldn't eat, all she wanted was water after we looked at her paper work to get more information about her, we saw tht she was already neutered and she as only 8 weeks old not the 10 weeks that I was told She was. By saturday morning she stopped drinking water at all and was now throwing up. By sunday she was now running a fever and still now eating. We were force feeding puppy milk trying to get her better. Monday morning I rushed her to our vet. She was very very sick. My vet felt that she was neutered at around six weeks old in order to get her ready for the adoption event. Which he felt was way to young to do it. Then she was shipped up from Florida for the event. She is suffering from stress and anxiety. Ihe gave us medication for her trying to get her to eat, she also got a injection for the fever. Tuesday morning I had to call the vet back because she still would not eat at all , we brought hr back and had to leave her with the vet so he could give her an iv and more medication. When we looked at her paper work it stated at some point she was 6.8 lbs but at the first trip to the vet she weighted 4.8 lbs. Brandywine should have seen how sick she was before the event. Its discusting how she has been treated. You should be ashamed to call yourself an SPCA.

This was my first adopting and it will definitely not be my last. I like the way the staff came together to fine the correct puppy when the one I had picked didn't match the paperwork nor the chip the puppy was carrying. Even though I ended up adopting the puppy anyway I appreciated the energy and the coming together to make things right. You Rock!

3 stars because of some of the people who volunteer and give their time freely; otherwise 1 star for employee attitude-It could have been the day we were there but we were basically ignored. The man giving the cat vaccines made us feel like we were in the way no matter how many times we adjusted where we stood to make sure we were not in his path. The gal helping him was attentive only to him. We were obviously being ignored. Maybe more animals would get adopted if more of the staff were friendlier. Needless to say, we will not be returning.

I visited the facility on June 30th, 2017 at 12:00 PM ( opening time ). The majority of the pens had feces and urine in them. The dogs were standing and or laying in the mess. Most water bowls were empty or near empty. Their food appeared to be thrown on the floor and not in bowls almost as if the staff thought they were feeding chickens. There was a young pup as you entered the pen area that appeared to be having trouble breathing. I have visited this SPCA in the past and have never witnessed such neglect. I will continue to visit this facilty on a random basis and notify the proper authorities if need be.

I recently left a 5-stars review, 4 days ago to be exact. On that review I talked about how nice the staff is and the dogs are taken care however I complained about the kennel area is on the small size. Well, I had to delete that review because my actual experience change. We adopted the sweetest puppy which with time turned out to be deaf to our surprise, we weren't informed about this life-changing situation but this didn't bother us, we fell in love with Dean and we wouldn't turn it back like he was a damaged good, however, I believe they should make you aware of situations such as this (yes they suspected it, is on the paperwork they provide us after the adoption process was finalized). Anyhow, Dean being deaf is not the issue as I said before, the issue is that Dean came home with Kennel Cough, I mentioned my suspicions (I'm not a vet) to the technician when I was dropping Dean for his surgery (he got neutered) to which I was ignored. Surgery was performed Monday 09/21/2020 and as we suspected he got worse and worse by Thursdays we brought him to the vet, they prescribed antibiotics. Sunday he was worst we rushed to VCA, where he was diagnosed with Pneumonia, more meds where prescribed, we had spent almost $500 on vet bills, which ridiculous, however, that's nothing compared to the last 3 sleepless nights we had thinking he might choke to death while sleeping. Both vets we're shocked on how they proceed with the surgery after we made the tech aware of something not being right about Dean's health, obviously, the surgery lowered his defenses and this provokes the illness to develop faster. To make it even worse we now have to bring our other dog to the vet to get a check, because she got exposed. All of this situation could have been avoided if WEST CHESTER SPCA has a separated area for puppies, yes pups kennels were in between older dogs kennels, they could easily get infected, God knows how many dogs went to their forever homes infected that day. We just lost our 12yo dog to cancer and thought we could get a healthier dog from a shelter than from a puppy-mill supported store, we were totally wrong, too sad.

UPDATE, BVSPCA contacted us 2 days after we posted this. They handled the situation perfectly. Dean is doing great now thanks to them. Special thank you to Walt, he was so kind and supportive. I change my rating from 1 to 5 stars. Though still, As an advice, keep the puppies away from the older dogs.
