We have never had cats as part of our family, but we were looking to add a fur baby. The facility made it easy to get to know the animals before choosing a family member. Every person I came in contact with seemed to really care for the animals and wanted them to go to loving homes. They were helpful in answering any questions we had, and walked us through the process.

Well, the holidays are here and the Brandywine Valley SPCA has sent out letters requesting donations. I went on to their website to take a look at the Form 990 for the past couple of years to get a feel for how the organization is doing . According to the Form 990 for 2014, Adam Lamb, the Executive Director, was paid $40,866. On the Form 990 for 2015 Mr. Lamb's salary is reported to be $175,712, an increase of $134,846!! I find it difficult to understand how a small, non-profit organization can justify such a large salary . They solicit donations. How much of the money which is donated is used to care for and help animals? How much goes toward executive and staff compensation? It would appear that the Brandywine Valley SPCA is doing quite well. My money will go elsewhere.

My mother had to get our dogs vaccinated today and one of the receptionist ladies had the worst attitude. She was annoyed by my dogs barking and projected that onto my mom while paying for everything. You d think that if someone works in a vet they d be able to handle dogs barking and not get mad ab it. I get that my dogs are loud and obnoxious and I m sorry for the inconvenience but you chose this job. Lose the attitude.

I adopted my dog back in July and have had an incredibly positive experience. Before I made up my mind on my beloved dog, they allowed me to sit with 6 other dogs so that I could test out my compatibility with them. I thought that I may have been annoying for wanting to see so many dogs, however they completely embraced my enthusiasm and were more than happy to let me visit with each one. After I had decided which dog was perfect for my lifestyle and personality, I was able to take my dog home the next day, as he needed to be neutered. They also provide an excellent list of veterinary clinics and behaviorists to take your pet to after your adoption which is extremely helpful when trying to decide where to go. The staff is extremely pleasant and knowledgeable and I highly recommend this shelter looking to adopt.

Our experience with the CCSPCA was, and continues to be the worst experience we have ever had with any business. First, we had out dog neutered. Within 3 days he developed an infection which almost killed him. We tried to contact the spca, which we had no response. We had to rush our dog to our personal vet, then HOPE; An ER for animals. He stayed over night on fluids and antibiotics. And was still dying. He had emergency surgery the next day, which costs us thousands of dollars. We finally got in contact with the ccspca, and we're promised a call back in 24 hours. We're still waiting 3 weeks later. It's unbelievable that anyone would entrust their pets to their care. We came in for a simple procedure and almost lost our dog. One could say accidents happen. But they have yet to own up to their mistake, or even pretend to care.

Adopted our k9 from this spca. As much as I appreciate their mission and think that every single location is great, this one stands above the rest. They really have everything together. The place is clean, the pets are cared for and the staff loves their work. I suggest this SPCA to anyone in West Chester area over any pet shop. Save a life instead of supporting pet farmers.

I have already recommended you all to friends already. Your staff & volunteers are amazing, they care nicely for your animals and are well educated & caring. LOVE that you are a no-kill shelter. I adopted Magic last week and it was an awesome experience and she s acclimating well. We already had a dog so we brought him to meet her before we made a decision and I m SO happy you all offer that & I felt safe with the girl who led it and what she was trained for. When we left I was confident we came to the right place & made a great decision. Even the woman who checked us out was thorough & very nice!!! You are a top notch shelter and THANK YOU for what you all do for these lovely animals!!!!!

My daughter adopted an 11 month old puppy on mothe...

My daughter adopted an 11 month old puppy on mothers day this year. The cost was $250 not to mention everything else the dog needed. However this was something she signed up for so she knew the potential cost the dog is a beautiful Collie mix who traveled overseas and has been thru hell. But even with all that she is an amazing intelligent animal with a loving and gentle personality. After a day or so we noticed the dog had diarrhea. When I called the clinic they suggested it was her nerves and we should give her rice and boiled chicken which we did because we knew she had her first appt in Malvern that week. What my daughter found out is that the dog has giardia. We have been treating her for 5 days with no improvement. What is even more discouraging is reading the posts regarding the fact that these poor animals are left in their areas and are not taken out when they should be. Also the fact that this particular shelter is more concerned with thier bottom line and thier numbers rather then the well being of these animals. Is it really that must of an expense to this so called non profit shelter to test any animal for this particular parasite before adoption?! My daughter wanted to do a good thing and loves animals with all of her heart but unfortunately we are not the type of family with a bottomless bank account and I say that because the clinic in Malvern now wants us to bring the dog back for more tests in 2 weeks if things do not improve but made it very clear that it will not be cheap. Thankfully we have a wonderful vet who will be treating Lady for this awful thing she has to endure. I just want to know when it became more about money then about taking care of these animals. So just a word of warning to anyone who is thinking if adopting from here, you may get an animal with a dreadful parasite that will cost you anywhere from $300 to $600. I just feel as if they charge so much to just simply adopt and that's why more people do not because they simply can't afford to rescue an animal from there. I know a number of people like us who would love to open up thier homes but cannot afford the outrageous amount the SPCA charges. I understand they need to charge something but when I hear the CEO of this shelter receives $200,000 for an annual salary it's very disheartening. We will do everything we can for this beautiful animal to get her back to a healthy being so she can live a long happy life but I just do not want another family to go through what we are now. So if you decide to adopt from here I would make sure the animal does not have giardia. Oh and they also do not disinfect thier play yard either. My daughter took her 2 year old fox terrier to meet Lady and a week later he had kennel cough which we later learned he got it from being in thier yard. Thankfully he's been treated and is doing fine but if they would treat their play yard once and a while then these dogs would have a better chance of not picking anything up but I suppose that may be too expensive for them to do. This truly breaks my heart and I really hope that there are a few there that care more about what happens to those animals and not the "bottom line$$$"

Went to adopt a German Shepherd there, and during the application phase one of my room-mates moved out before they were able to meet the dog. My house was set up, had all of the supplies I needed, had a Vet appointment, and was 100% ready to rock, then they call me and tell me that I cannot adopt unless the old room mate went to meet the dog, even though they no longer lived within the same residence the animal would. Why does this seem nothing short of flat out idiotic? common sense would suggest, CALL THE OLD ROOMMATE if you don't believe me.

The vets and staff are first-rate. I've never had better care, even at places that cost 3X as much. They heroically tried to help me with my ailing little dog, but when all efforts failed, they were so caring and sensitive when we had to let him go. I am so thankful to them all for their caring and help at such a sad time.

I would highly recommend Brandywine Valley SPCA! I stopped there on my way home to New England for the clear the shelters event and came home with my wonderful kitty. Although there was very high volume due to the event, the staff was welcoming, organized, and very pleasant to interact with. The facility was wonderful and the animals were very happy. I have never adopted before and hope the next time I adopt the experience will be just as pleasant as this was!!

It was a great experience right up until we were going out to the car with our dog. There was a volunteer standing by our car with the dog he was walking and talking to someone. The dog he was walking lurched towards our dog and some upper middle aged woman yelled at us, tell8ing us the dogs had to.be kept 10 feet apart. He was standing by our car.

The mega adoption was obviously super busy but they did their absolute best to answer every question we had about Oakley before adopting him to make sure we were as comfortable as possible before bringing him home. They also gave us tips for the long run since he had some temperament issues and made sure we knew who to contact if we had any issues. We never felt alone in the process.

The staff was accommodating and knowledgeable about the animals and also the process of adoption. We worked with rescues before coming to the SPCA, and they weren't very transparent or helpful in guiding us through the adoption process, and that was not the case at the SPCA. It was also great to see staff not only keeping the facility clean but also interacting with the animals. We LOVE our new fur baby, and if the time arises that we want to add to our family, we will absolutely be visiting the West Chester facility first! Follow our little guys adventure @rig_beast

I adopted a Cat, Who came with Gigantic fleas and a advanced respiratory infection. She died in her sleep on Wednesday the 18th. She was 2 months and 4 days old. The other cat we adopted pulled through and is now healthy. We are still mourning her death. I hope the people who could have stopped this burn in hell. And on top of all that the cat that died was malnourished.

First, I would like to respond to the people who l...

First, I would like to respond to the people who left less than stellar marks for CCSPCA due to an animal they adopted that was not "perfect" once they brought them home. Specifically, the woman 'Kate' who adopted a cat 10 months ago & the cat ended up peeing all over the house. I have done volunteer work for many rescue organizations and know the financial constraints most of these shelters have. They can only employ just enough people to clean, do the books, etc. Due to this, not every animal is going to be known how they will react once they leave the shelter. The staff gets to know each animal as best they can in the time that they have. This also means the staff gets the medical care available when the animal is recognized to be ill. But, nothing is perfect, and sometimes an animal may get sick once he/she is brought home or the animal may react to the change in environment with stress and subsequently poor behaviors - such as "peeing" in undesignated places, hiding, etc. The people who adopt MUST try & be more understanding & patient with their animals. And this also means being understanding for the people who run these rescue organizations. They all have their hearts in the right place and do the best they can with what they have. They would not be there if they didn't have a love for animals.
I personally have adopted from the CCSPCA and had a great experience. My dog was well taken care of there and has been a true joy to our family. I am truly grateful for all of the selfless work the people who work & volunteer at the CCSPCA. They have all seen a lot of cruelty inflicted by humans on these poor animals, yet get up every day with the intention of helping the animals in the best way they can.

This place is amazing! It is clean and the animals are the priority. They have upwards of 60 dogs at any given time waiting and ready for adoption. They have wonderful camps for kids in the summer called critter camp. They have tons of help for people with cats or dogs with food and things. They need volunteers!! They need blankets, towels, dog beds, toys, wash clothes, hand towels and so much more to be donated. They need volunteers to come love the animals, walk the dogs, wash doggie bowls, wash kong toys, do the animal bedding laundry, help with taking pictures and social media, help with admin side. So much to do and so many animals to help. Please visit and volunteer for your local SPCA! BVSPCA is an AWESOME place. The fee to volunteer is 25$ you get a class- a tour- a leash- a t shirt and hand sanitizer for your 25$. They have kids birthdays and kid programs too that include the animals. Last but not least you can be a foster parent and also come give some fur friend a forever home today! Love this place!! If you have a child that has sensory issues with noise just know that the kennel is or can be very noisy. The doggies love to chat/bark as You can understand. They have many programs for cats as well and community cat programs for the cats with no homes. Call today or go visit- you won't be disappointed.

Lost my baby a year an a half ago there's not a day that goes by i don't miss her. It was my lucky day when i was in the Chaddsford area and the SCPA of Brandywine was closing up for the day at a remote site. Its was like this little guy was waiting for me because he peeked he's head around the corner and that was all i needed to see. The crew took their time and made sure that my new friend came home with me... Thanks so much guys you made this old guy smile again.

I love these people! They just did spaying and neutering for a mom cat and her 4 kittens for us, and it's so much cheaper and less hassle than our former vet. They did and excellent job! We also had a male neutered last year, and they also dis a great job. All of our cats bounced back to normal within hours, and are doing very well. We have been using them for medical care for our cats, and are very pleased with both the staff and the medical care. Thank you so much for what you do for the animals!

It s been years since I have been to this location. The upgrades and renovations look amazing. The staff were very helpful and polite. The place was very busy but we got through it. We adopted Tink who we have now renamed Tahlia . She is the sweetest cat and enjoys kids as well. She s very much a lover and enjoys being held which I was surprised because we haven t had her 24 hrs yet. She seems to fit in very well. The only concerned I had was she and many of the other cats seem to have some type of respiratory infection and or eye infections. When I mentioned her symptoms to the staff before taking her home they were very kind and sent her home with medications so we are hoping for a speedy recovery for Tahlia. We enjoy her very much and look forward to adopting again from this location.

I tried to get a job here not too long ago. I have worked with animals for 3 years, and one of those jobs was working as an animal care assistant in a veterinary hospital. So I have plenty of experience. Had an interview almost 3 weeks ago. The staff seemed friendly, however I could tell almost instantly the environment was very stressful. During the interview, I was asked if I could do a working interview the same day when they told me the working interview would be SEPARATE. I was not appropriately dressed and was angered by this. Then it turns out they only had me do the working interview because they did not have enough staff. So it was pretty much my first day on the job. After being there for 3 hours, I had to leave because I had a doctor's appointment. The manager told me to call her if I was still interested in the job. So I called her 3 times and left her 3 voicemails. No answer. I tried emailing her, no answer. I even tried calling customer service of the SPCA itself only to realize they NEVER PICK UP THEIR PHONES. Shortly after, they put another advertisement up that they were hiring again. It was a big slap in the face. I was also told the pay SUCKS by a previous enolyeee shortly after I saw the advertisement. They also informed me that the SPCA fired them, and rehired them two times before they quit for good giving no good explanation. DO NOT WORK HERE.

My wife (Patti) and I were owners of McGruff. We called him Bubby. We bought him at Chester County Pennsylvania animal rescue where my nephew and his girlfriend spotted him and sent us his picture. We fell in love with him right away. Bubby was the coolest dog in the whole wide world. He listened and obeyed commands so well. He was well mannered. We gave him love and he paid us back 100X. My favorite times with him were Saturday and Sunday mornings when we went for walks in a wooded area near my house. He would wake me up at 6 in the morning with his nose nudging my hand saying come on daddy, it's time for our walk. During our travels we would meet up with his doggy friends. He loved the socializing. Several times during the week Bubby would hobnob with his doggie buddies Lucy and Jersey (next door neighbors). This past summer, we took him to cape hatteras where he had a great time on the beach terrorizing the ghost crabs. There are so many memories in the one and three quarter years we had him. He was such a great dog and there isn't a day that goes by where I don't think about him...my boy. He is now in heaven, but the memory of Bubby will always be with Patti and I.
Thank You a Thousand Times Over,

BVSPCA is a no kill shelter for cats and dogs. They always have plenty of adorable furry babies, just waiting to be adopted. The shelter is closed on Mondays to the public. They offer summer camp for children, have a volunteer and fostering programs. Adoptable animals have been spayed/neutered and vaccinated. Or you can check out their website, for an event near you. The shelter accepts donations and a wish list of needed items is on their website.

Everybody was very friendly and helpful, and the animals had plenty of space and care. The staff was aware of each pet s circumstances as much as they could be, and new which pets were anxious or shouldn t be around other animals/little kids/a noisy house. I also adored the fact that you have a working pet program, and we re trying to find homes for cats that wouldn t ever really be socialized, but would be very happy with the freedom of being a barn or brewery cat. Y all just go above and beyond and it s heartwarming.

My son and I adopted our wonderful puppy a little over 2 weeks ago. There was very little staff available to show us the puppies, but 2 of the staff were very nice and friendly. We met with 2 puppies before deciding on the one for us. She is a joy and our 4 year old lab mix loves her! For this I would give a 5 star rating especially since this is a no kill shelter. I am giving a 3 star rating however because our puppy got very sick very quickly and we almost lost her in the first week. When we were filling out the paperwork to adopt her, they gave us some medicine (pills too large for a puppy to swallow) saying they had detected a cough. She had a runny nose, but was playful and eating and did not cough too much, but by Wednesday night she was not feeling well and not being her playful self. We already had a vet appointment for Thursday, but called and took her in earlier. Our vet diagnosed her with pneumonia. She required intensive care from us and our vet. I tried calling the SPCA office and left multiple messages to let the staff know how sick our puppy was because of the exposure that she had with the other puppies in the pen. No one from the SPCA has ever answered the phone or returned my calls.

This shelter is fantastic. We came in to find a new feline member to our family and found the perfect fit with Willow (previously known as Gimlet). The staff was helpful and caring. The animals were very well looked after and they have an amazing track record for getting pets into forever homes. I love how much time and effort the staff and volunteers put into socializing the animals to make them more adoptable. I highly recommend the BVSPCA for anyone looking for a rescue.

Edit - just had a visit with my vet and he's diagnosis of Willow is that she is a certifiably awesome cat! He was extremely impressed with how interactive and loving she is and that is a direct testament to how well BVSPCA takes care of the animals while they are waiting for their forever homes. Thanks again guys for the best cat ever!

As a full time volunteer at the CCSPCA I see what happens on the inside. I can say I have spent the last year watching the positive changes this organization has made and they are wonderful. An overall wonderful organization doing what it needs and more to make a difference.

Let it be known that I am a huge animal lover and ...

Let it be known that I am a huge animal lover and rescue supporter. But after my experience here I will no longer support this facility. To make a very long story short, my boyfriend and I were interested in a dog. We didn't adopt him right away because we were given barely any time to spend with him. So my boyfriend went three consecutive days to visit him and get to know him better. It is extremely important to us that our adoption is successful, and getting to know the dog's personality is a must.

After we felt we had gotten to know the dog better we filled out an application, due to some time restraints we couldn't adopt him that day. Which by the way as a former rescue volunteer I am very concerned about their same day adoption policy. They don't check vet or personal references to know if the animals being adopted will actually be taken care of. This also allows people to adopt on impulse, which puts these animals at risk of being brought back to a shelter or just being dumbed.

My boyfriend told the staff he would be back to adopt the dog. In the meantime the staff let someone else adopt him. We had already grown attached to this dog. The staff had all of our information from our adoption application. They could have at least contacted us to let us know someone else was interested in the same dog. We would have done anything to get there in time to adopt the dog ourselves. But because we wanted to get to know the dog, and make sure it would be a good match we never got a chance to take him home.

Our hope is that no one else goes through what we did, and that the Chester County SPCA performs more responsible adoptions in the future.

Update: Kitten Pear is doing very well now, in fact he is an absolute, adorable monster. BV SPCA was very kind and helpful with costs of caring for him after a serious health scare. Beware of vets that won't commit to a diagnosis and tell you that your pet could have a totally normal illness or a totally fatal one! BV SPCA vet was very frank and direct with us, giving me peace of mind after another vet convinced me Pear was not going to survive!

Original: PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT for those adopting kittens since July 2018: We adopted a 2 mo male kitten SATURDAY 7/14/18. The Kitty City room was full of lethargic sneezing goop eyed kitten. Our kitten has had a mid grade fever and lethargy two days after bringing him home and diarrhea since adoption. We went to the ER yesterday. Blood work done suggests his white blood cells are very high, which could indicate a fatal untreatable illness called FIP but could be caused by an upper respiratory infection too. He is on antibiotics, got fluids at the ER, his fever was still high this morning but he successfully ate breakfast today. We are taking him to the SPCA vet this evening, I will update. I will also make BVSPCA aware, this is not a negative review of the shelter. However, we are scared that the baby we adopted will not live. We have sunk ~$500 into caring for his health in 3 days.
