San Fran Financial District has some super pricey hotels. The Chancellor is a reasonable alternative to those. I didn't have a view, but I wasn't hanging out in the room, so didn't care. Staff was nice, room was comfortable and well appointed. My west facing room got super warm in the afternoons, but they do provide a fan and there was a ceiling fan (no AC). If you need to stay in this area, the Chancellor is a solid choice. And everything you need is within a block or two. Never got the chance to try the hotel restaurant or bar.

Great location, friendly hotel, many quirks. You will need to be flexible staying here.
The location is convenient (about 10 minutes from the Moscone Center) and the cable car passes right in front. But this old hotel is odd. The rooms are small. The bathroom is a trip hazard as it s a step up with a door that doesn t fully open wide (you will have trouble if you are overweight). The bathroom vent is a door above the shower head which opens by itself in a creepy way. Despite the tiny bathroom, there is a dank walk in closet next to it.
Room decor is a bit ugly and dated. The USB / power outlet combo in my room was not working. The dorm room size fridge was convenient.
The staff is friendly. The check in desk has free apples and cookies. The bar has free popcorn.
The public staircase between floors can be treacherous as it is steep and twisting. There is even an ugly twisty railing to help. Or you can take one of the two slow elevators. In the event of a fire, evacuation will be down the twisty staircase or the fire escape off the side of the building.
You can decline room service and get a $7 credit for each day which can be spent in the hotel s restaurant.
Avoid the $17 shuttle to the airport which can be purchased at the gift counter. My shuttle arrived to pick me up 35 minutes late.

Very charming hotel. Located near Union Square and you can easily get around via local transit. The staff are very friendly and the rooms are quite comfortable. It is the first place I try to book when visiting San Francisco.

Just arrived at Chancellor around 2PM and had the worst experience ever. We were given a room that was inside of the building (no window facing outside), which was obviously not what I requested and paid for. When I went to the front desk asking to change a room with a window facing outside, the lady was very impatient and told me we had to wait for another hour before they can give us a room. I asked the lady for her help to look for a room because I was so tired and hungry, she was very rude and said, "Our *standard* check-in time is 3PM, so you have to wait.". And then she told us to step aside so that she could continually check in other people (so the standard 3PM check-in time only applies to us?). I booked this hotel because of the great reviews. However, so far, I am very disappointed and not even feeling welcomed. Not recommended.

This hotel is very nice! Retro in a 1950s sort of vibe and the room space mimics that era - small. So those born in the age of excess may complain about the room size. I stayed on the 5th floor in room 507 which is on the back side of the hotel - the quiet side of the hotel. The room was very quiet and the bed was absolutely cloud like.. Medium mattress with luxury linens. There was one king bed in the room which took up most of the room.. You can walk around the bed on both sides of the bed, but not much more. Two chairs and nightstands take up the rest of the room's real estate. The location of the hotel allows you to do and see all things San Francisco city and within a short 10 minute drive to Fisherman's Wharf: shopping galore right on Powell Street and a 5 minute walk to Market Street for more shopping. Trolley stop is 6 steps outside the hotel door. Parking at the Marriott structure across the street for $20.00 per night is about the cheapest rate in the whole city. The staff were so nice and helpful and the nightly cookies, coffee, tea and flavored water were great free perks. There is a bar in the hotel and restaurants on both sides of the hotel. I wouldn't recommend this hotel for persons with disabilities in wheelchairs because I didn't see access for them..it may be there but I didn't see it and the door of the hotel does not open automatically. Also the bathroom is very tight so I'm not sure how a person with a wheelchair or large walker would fit in there. That said, the hotel is CLEAN and the bed entices one to sleep in. This is a great place for a romantic getaway for two or for business travel. The front desk staff were top notch and I would definitely stay here again. Out of the multiple hotels on a US/Europe trip, this was the least memorable for me.
Location was superb. Walking distance to the BART. Close to Union Square.
But for what feels like a fairly spacious city, the Chancellor felt like quite Tokyo in size, but certainly American in delivery. Quaint, quirky but clean and functional.
3 stars have been bumped up to 4 on the basis that the Chancellor does nothing wrong, it just doesn't excel. It's also very reasonably priced.

Super friendly staff, the room even though it had no street view (they offered it but we did not want to wait a couple of hours), it's like the pictures. The bathroom super good. It has a refrigerator, iron, hair dryer, bathroom accessories, etc. Breakfast very good, water is offered all the time (I recommend bringing your bottle for the refill), coffee, cookies .. There is a small bar in the lobby. Excellent location I will stay here again !!

I went in June. There was no air conditioning, but it was cold enough to go down in the morning and night. It was not necessary at all in the daytime because it was comfortable with the wind entering from the window.

The Chancellor Hotel turns one hundred this year, but I came here for something new: the San Francisco Magic Parlor. It's a small space where you can peer closely to try to reverse-engineer the illusions. The cookies in the lobby smell freshly-baked. The meeting room on the second floor has etched glass in the doors showing the flying boats that used to take off from Treasure Island bound for China.

There is no one outside to assist with valet. The lady who checked me in was indifferent and didn't seem to care. The room is clean, bed comfortable, bathroom quaint. However, the street noises, cable car noise, street musicians (11:30 p.m.) doesn't seem to stop. I'm wondering if they put me in this room ,200, bc i reserved thru a 3rd party. Whatever the reason, I cant recommend this hotel. Btw, i usually stay at the St. Francis Drake, which is on the same street, and its so quiet. Not a peep of outside noise, whatsoever.

Overall very impressed with this nice old hotel. It's a little bit cramped, but makes up for it by being the quietest, most comfortable place I've ever stayed in San Francisco. Really conveniently located next to transit, restaurants, and bars staying here made it easy to go to & from everywhere we wanted to visit.

Location is great, staff are very friendly, but the rooms are pretty average for a 3-star hotel.
Bathrooms are very small, and cleanliness are not up to scratch.
The size of bedrooms is fine, but the worst thing is the continuous humming noise that kept on going all day all night and caused me nuisance and disrupted my sleep.
The other bad thing in the room is the smell of food at 8am in the morning; the room stunk of onions and bacon everything as if I was sleeping in the kitchen, notwithstanding I was sleeping on the 7th floor - this is a serious ventilation issue that needs to be attended to and resolved.
Wi-Fi signal in the room was very weak, and I had to switch to 4G on many occasions due to slow connection. Wi-Fi in the hotel lobby was fine.
I believe the hotel needs a little facelift.

Very friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, nice, original features, and obviously aiming to do things right. Room not huge, but walk-in closet with hanging, safe, ironing board etc was! In my opinion the only place to stay in San Francisco, the staff are friendly and helpful nothing is too much trouble. The room was very clean and comfortable with everything you could want, safety deposit box, iron and ironing board, bath, shower, tv, toiletries, little jar of sweets, comfy bed, pillow menu. No air conditioning but a large ceiling fan which was adequate for us in July we had it on all the time and it was quiet so no sleep disturbance. Fabulous buffet style breakfast with eggs and omelettes cooked to order, make your own pancakes, breakfast $18. Complimentary cookies, coffee and fruit in the lobby. Location excellent shops, bars and restaurants on the doorstep. Piers 33 and 39, Fisherman's Wharf 30 minute walk away or the cable car to take you goes right past the hotel. Toiletries provided even bath salts for a relaxing bath in the oversized tub which you can share with a Chancellor rubber duck. Stay at the Chancellor you will not be disappointed.

A nice quaint hotel that is well positioned in the city. The rooms are small and a little old, but they were pretty and had lots of facilities. No air conditioning, but it didn't need it - the window was ajar for the whole of our stay, which kept the temperature perfect and it was actually really quiet for a major city. The free wifi was a bit hit-and-miss, often dropping out and requiring you to sign in again, but it was good when it was working. The breakfasts were nice and had a lot of variety, but there were no dinners offered by the hotel other than a small and uninteresting selection of bar foods, which was quite curious, and meant that we had to go elsewhere for dinner. The hotel is very well positioned, with the cable car stop literally outside the front door, lots of bus routes very close by, and the metro rail only a few blocks down the hill. A short stroll from several major shopping centers, restaurants, and other locations meant it was always pretty easy to find somewhere for dinner and somewhere to shop. The staff at the hotel were generally friendly and helpful, but note that we had to pay cash for all the tours we booked through the hotel, and the same with the MUNI travel cards. Free coffee and biscuits every day is always a positive too. Overall a fine stay in a great location.
