Wow. Truly amazing. The architecture of this church is unreal. The history and the ability to construct this church at this time is truly amazing. Anyone who comes to savannah must come see this. It's free, you walk around yourself so no tour needed. You won't regret it.

When I met my husband over 50 years ago, one of the first places he took me was to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Being of the baptist faith I felt like I had gone to Heaven without dying. It was beautiful then and became more beautiful after we were married there in 1959. We moved to my husband's home state of NY one year later. After 22 years we moved back to Savannah. We were reaquainted with Fr. Herbert Wellmeier, the priest that married us in 1959, he had returned to the Cathedral for his second assignment as Rector.. Soon after returning to Savannah I started working as secretary and bookkeeper at the Cathedral. A few years later my husband studied to become a permanent deacon. He was ordained at the Cathedral by Bishop Raymond Lessard. Two of our four grandchildren were baptised there. In 2001 I retired from the Cathedral after 17 years, we moved to my hometown, Glennville, GA. We are very active at a very small parish, St. Jude, where my husband is permanent deacon. We love our small church but I still have a special feeling when I read or some one speaks of The Cathedral of St. John The Baptist. I guess it will always feel like home to us.

Absolutely stunning! Be sure to talk with the gentleman at the photo album towards the front of the church, he was full of extra info and tidbits that made our visit even more fun and interesting! The lady at the front table was not so friendly however!

We did not attend any religious events at the church, we just visited the inside. It was beautiful! I'd recommend it to anyone, regardless of religious views, just for the architecture alone. While we were there we got a 15 min history of the cathedral from a very nice and funny man (from NJ) which was very interesting and educational.

Hopped off of our trolly tour to see this beautiful, historic church. If you are on the trolly tour where you can get on and off throughout the day take the time to visit this Cathedral. The trolly stops right by it and comes back every 20 minutes. Mass was held at noon. There are no tours during mass. After attending mass we went on a self guided tour. Most days the priest is available by 1:00 to give tours or you can walk around to look at the churches beauty and stained glass windows. If this review was helpful please give it a like!

The oldest Catholic church in George, this gothic building was built in the 1870s.

The stain glass alone is worth the time, and admission is free.

Cathedral is just phenomenal. There's so much intricate artwork with the statues and the stained glass within the church you can easily spend an hour investigating everything and taking photographs. The folks are very friendly and you can ask questions and get a very understandable answer. We go to this Cathedral every time or in Savannah

Magnificent. Definitely worth taking 20 minutes and visiting this gem. The interior is breathtaking. Everywhere you look is stained glass, a sculpture, and paintings of religious scenes. And the altar is beautiful. Wow wow wow. And hey, leave $5 in the donation box. It can't be cheap to a/c this place.
