My dad and about 25 members of our family went to the Buxton Inn for his 60th Birthday. We booked a room and said it was for a birthday party and we even accommodated them with making our time later so that our party wouldn't interfere with another large party that was scheduled that night. When we arrived they took us to a room where the tables were set up as individual tables so it was very hard to make conversations with people so we moved the table together ourselves. One of the waitresses seemed to be more on the ball than the other and began to take our orders right away. Then after they both took everyone's order, they made an announcement to the room of the specials for the night - which I thought was odd and definitely out of order. We brushed that one off as it wasn't that big of a deal. Then the waitress, that was on the ball, starting bringing out our food to half of the party that she waited on while the other half that had the other waitress didn't get any food served to them until 25 minutes later after we had already finished our meals and had already starting eating our dessert. This was unacceptable and even though half of the room received our meals right away most of the food was cold. Have you ever eaten cold prime rib? Its not very good and our potatoes were ice cold. The people that hadn't gotten their food were then told that they ran out of prime rib so they had to order something else. My sister ordered the NY strip steak medium, and when she finally received her food, the outside of the steak was completely black and the inside was still pink - this again didn't make sense to me. I tried it and it tasted like I was eating a piece of charcoal. Her boyfriends chicken was cooked the same way and was not good. We had mentioned a few of these problems to the waitress but didn't take the food back because it had been partially eaten and we try to deal with what we had been given due to what was supposed to be a nice special meal for my dad and family. Once we choked down our food we got the bills and then paid. We were all huddled by the door and getting ready to leave as the waitress, the one who was not doing a very good job, came up with the manager. The manager was very rude and smug and announced to the room that someone had not left a tip and the waitress made a scene as to where they were sitting of the ones that didn't leave a tip. I have never been one to not tip, but to each their own, and I do kind of see this persons point as to not tipping due to the service, not receiving their food till 25 minutes after most of us were served, the food was horrible, and when they asked for some simple butter and sour cream for the potato it was never brought. Spending that much money on meals, you would have the expectations of what the service should be like and a better standard and quality of food. No where is it a law to tip and tipping is supposed to reflect the experience and service of the one you are tipping, so I get the frustration and where the non-tip came into play. With all that said, I have never in my life seen anyone dispute not getting tipped. It was so unprofessional and out of line for this manager and the waitress on how they dealt with this situation. For one, they had the name on the receipt from the person who didn't tip, so they could have pulled that person aside and asked why there wasn't a tip and what they could have done better instead of announcing it to the room. But while the person who didn't leave a tip was justifying why they didn't to the manager in front of everyone, the waitress who was not very good at all, said she wasn't the one cooking the food so it wasn't her fault for the food being served like it was. Listen honey, you work with these people who make the food and you shouldn't be SERVING the crap food when I'm sure you know the food is crap! Tipping deals with the whole package, the food, the service, the atmosphere and all of those were extremely sub par. We had a way better experience with 20 of us on a short notice at the Olive Garden in Heath.
