I recently had back surgery during the current pandemic at Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth. I was very pleased with my entire experience.
Everyone worked very hard to give me the best care. I was taken to the new surgical wing which is just beautiful and well done. My nurses were very caring and knowledgeable. My surgeon Dr. Kerner is just the best anyone could want.
Thanks to all!!!!!

The hospital staff and nurses even doctors 5 stars the hospital itself 1 I just got home 2 days ago from removing my whole colon. The hospital has holes in the walls my room dust so bad staff couldn't clean it so moved to another room with sink not connected to the wall. I refuse to take a shower look like poop stings in the tub and paint was coming off every where. Spent 12 days in hell and the worst part because it's a catholic beliefs you have to follow them too. That was the worst can't take much pain meds to go home. Never again in that hospital for any thing.

Terrible experience with my son in the ER. ABSOLUTELY a nasty hospital. Nobody checks on you and they don't care if you are there for days with your child and they get no bathing or even gettings meds for over 48 hrs. The psych system is a joke. He didn't get to a mental health bed for 4 days! We stayed in the ER for FOUR DAYS!!!!!

I think its a criminal environment, the place that doesn't care for the mentally ill. My daughter suffered rape crisis in '13! She walked into the hospital with 100.00 plus new shoes walked out with, "No", No Administrator to pretend they didn't have them, no follow-up! Its a gross reality, pretending to have a professional environment for community care...

So I reviewed this hospital negatively IN GREAT DETAIL regarding my mother's care on 5 south in March of 2017, and edited it to show the better care she received on 2 south in September of 2017, and now the review is gone! WTH? There was even a comment from someone else stating 5 south was the worst when their family member was there and even a reply from Maryview. All just poofed. So, beware of the place. Guess they figured I'd forget and never check again, but I want folks to know just what type of hospital it is. The can't erase my notes or my memory of how badly my mother was treated the first time, how she had to have an outpatient procedure and contracted MRSA so she had to be admitted again, and how much better she was treated the second time. The only partial saving grace? The cafeteria food was very good the second time there. I should know, I ate there once or twice a day for 14 days.

Two hospital stays in January, 2021. I was treated well by all concerned. One nurse was absolutely outstanding. but I only saw her one shift, and didn't remember her name. My husband and I have both had Maryview stays and have been very happy with all things involved. And, yes I waited almost a day to get out of the ER both times, but all the hospitals are overflowing with COVID patients. During the COVID jam, the hospital should provide meals , not very small sugary snacks, to those waiting hours upon hours in the ER.

There were only cashiers, no doctor. Even if they couldn't do anything about your illness, but they would not tell you the truth. After some unreasonable tests, they told me: "time would make you get used to this disease". They were just a liar under the guise of the hospital. Their business was not treatment , but making money.

The staff has come along way. I'm here for strep throat and dehydration, the nurses are constantly in here moving like clock work. They have done chest xrays and checked me for everything. The nurses are crossing their T's and dotting their I's. Thank you to the entire staff for taking really good care of me

I came through the emergency room. Everyone I came in contact with were exceptional from the emergency room doctors and nurses to the stepdown nurses. All the staff were pleasant and made my stay a pleasant one.

I understand with COVID 19 protocols my wife was not able to visit me in my room. However, with cellphones I was able to keep her up to date.

The only negative experience was how long I had to wait in the emergency before a bed was available for me (COVID19 again). I entered the emergency room at 12:30 PM on Sunday and did not get assigned a room until Monday evening at 10:00 PM. However the emergency room staff tried to make me as comfortable as possible.

After my husband was transported by ambulance from Patient First for possible heart attack, he was admitted for 3 days. The nursing staff on 3 North was amazing. Thanks to Rosie, Krystina, Marianne, Michelle and Serenia as well as their nursing assistants. Thanks also to the Head nurse Tamieko. The doctors were kind and efficient also. You all made our stay the best hospital experience we have had, and there have been many over the years. I have to admit that we had experienced some less than stellar care for family members in the past, so I was a little concerned. Thanks again for taking good care of my husband.

I had a horrible experience with this hospital. I went to the emergency room but the issue resolved itself shorty after I arrived. I declined most services, the only service I received was a doctor consult and a urine test but I was still billed the full amount. I did the appeal they requested and I wrote a letter to their appeals department and spoke with the appeals manager on the phone. She denied my appeal and still charged me the full amount. Stay away from this place

After my fiancee's major stroke, he had to go to an acute rehabilitation center. The Acute Rehabilitation Center @ Maryview exceeded all of our expectations. All of the staff supported him in his endeavors to walk again and get back to normal life and he is! Without their skill, support, and care for their patients and families my sweet heart would not have made the recovery he has in just 5 weeks. Don't get me wrong...the patient has to have a drive and the will to recover for this program to work...as long as you have that and the ability to be positive...the therapists will get you to the very best place you could possibly be. We will be forever grateful to ALL the staff at the Acute Rehab @ Maryview. We look forward to continuing his physical therapy with the Bon Secours in Motion on Portsmouth Blvd in Portsmouth, VA.

This is the worse hospital I have ever been in. Medical trash on the floor in the hallways. The nurses are rude and non caring. My husband sat in his dirty bed all day , the nurse telling him he didn't need a bed pan he only has gas. I will be reporting this disgusting place to the Hospital association that does the surveys . they need to shut this place down.

So the nurse name Brittany do not know how to talk to her patient s. Her tone is not very friendly, therefore instead if feeling like she care, it's more like I'm ready to curse her out. I recently was at the er with my father and he asked her to adjust his face mask. I guess she was irritated because the face mask was uncomfortable on him he was complaining. As a nurse she wasn't very nice. Everyone else that came in contact with my father was nice and understanding.

I have to admit that we had heard very bad things for years about this hospital. My husband was taken by ambulance there from work so we did not get a choice in where he was taken. I am very happy to say that this was one of the best hospital experiences ever for us. From the time he was treated in the ER, through emergency surgery, ICU, step down unit, until discharge four days later, I cannot say enough how good of care he received. All of the doctors and staff were so attentive and answered any questions we had. I can honestly say I would have no qualms about going back there. They saved his life. The rumors we must have heard were likely due to the way things used to be a long time ago.

This is the most filthy hospital I have ever seen. The bathrooms smell like urine, the walls have dried urine streaks on them. The room and hallway floors have dried spills of Lord knows what on them. There are empty lab viles left in the patients rooms on suicide watch. Piles of dirt everywhere, like they haven t used a dust mop for a month. The staff avoids passing your room and refuses eye contact IF they pass by so that they don t have to interact with you incase you may need something. They give the patient paper scrubs and don t even offer a blanket to keep warm. The waiting rooms have broken furniture in them. When the staff does speak to you, they are rude and condescending. Not to mention the five hour wait as the nurses laugh over their cell phones at the desk for majority of the night.

Horrible service! Tried to ask a doctor for directions as to what door to go in her answer was "what" as if I was bothering her. Waiting for hours with no attention or follow up. In a field were empathy and helping people is you goal they are very poor at it! This must be the medical professionals that graduated LAST in their class! #truth #HORRIBLE

This place is awful. Bring people in the ER and ignore them. My mother has been here for three hours, hasn't even seen the nurse assigned to her let alone the doctor. Two EKGs and a chest X-ray and no info. They asked her for a urine sample, and still havent come to get it 45 minutes later. Or bothered to hook her back up to monitor her blood pressure after being told she has hypertension, and she blacked out in the ambulance on the way here. Special treatment for the drunk driver that crashed with his kid in the car and scratched up his forearm.
But the 73year old white woman who had heart palpitations and blacked out can wait.

My mother was transported to this hospital with complications actions not related to COVID19. Since her admission to the hospital I have been vigilant about her care and have been in contact with the doctors and nursing staff as we are not able to visit. With no logical explanation, they decided to test her for COVID19. Because of the test request, they have decided to move her to a COVID19 unit with other COVID19 positive patients, which puts my mother in a more challenging recovery situation. Logical decisions for the best interest of their patients is not their focus.

Worst place ever! Since this is a private hospital they like to patient dump. Meaning if your loved one has Medicare or Medicaid they do the least amount for them and then find places to dump or send the patient home. They are notorious for trying to send patients that are bedridden to Portsmouth nursing and Rehabilitation. Another place that is not recommended due to their lack of nursing, communication and professionalism.

I just have to say. .. I had an outpatient surgery done at Maryview. Every single person from the receptionist to the awesome PACU nurse treated me with kindness and compassion. I was overwhelmed with the staff. I am a nurse at a different huge hospital group and didn't exactly know what to expect but I was completely 100% satisfied. Amy from the OR was so sweet, she thanked me for the opportunity to care for me and said it was a privilege to take care of a fellow nurse. I just can't say enough about them. .. each and every one. 100% totally satisfied. To the point I should be in the next Maryview commercial. ..lol. Thank you Maryview staff g for taking care of this nurse and making my stay one with only positive things to say. Grateful fir excellent care, Mary Perdue

I had an absolute terrible doctor for my c section. Said one thing then during surgery he did whatever the hell he wanted. Went back to ask him to check me as my stomach doesnt feel like it should. Refused to even look, just made up dumb excesses. 1 day after having my baby i could not get in and out the bed easily nurses wouldn't come help enough. They wouldn't even take my baby to the nursery for me to shower. The food was so small i starved made it im possible to breastfeed when your starving! Then when i told them i was out of formula i needed more as my baby is crying for food they gave me such attitude! And took their sweet ass time.

Took my wife there a few nights ago and it's the WORST ER I have ever been in....so much disorganization, the room we were put in was filthy, the staff had NO CLUE what was going on. Dr. Clarke was not friendly AT ALL!!! They had to draw my wife's blood not once, not twice, BUT 3 times...(admitting the 2nd time was their fault). A nurse came in and ask me who the nurse was...I answered it's on the board here...her name is Amanda...she said I don't know her...went out in the hall and proceeded to yell out her name out...I couldn't believe it.
The ONLY reason we went to this ER is because my wife had surgery there a few weeks prior and they had her records...BUT if you can AVOID this ER you should AT ANY COST!!!
I usually do NOT do reviews...but working in the public like I do I really felt the need to let people know. Don't just stop at my review...keep reading the reviews below mine...apparently I am not the only one!!

Tonight my mom and I brought my 81 year old grandmother to the ER. The staff at check in was pleasant and nurturing toward my grandmother and it only got better from there. Sherri was the nurse assigned to my grandmother and she was so polite, gentle, understanding, and wonderful. Dr. Taylor then came in - he was able to explain to us and my grandmother what was going on and was extremely kind and compassionate.
Way to go Maryview - I m beyond impressed. This goes to show how valuable and caring employees can change perceptions of a facility.

I went in recently for a work related injury and it was terrible. I prefer Sentra but my job forced me to go here. They spent three hours just to tell me they could do nothing so I still had to go to Sentra and pay out of pocket. I will never go there again.

When you walk in there s no signs to show you were to go. You get placed in three different waiting areas. The x ray nurse was the only one who showed some common sense. If you re new to HR please go anywhere but here. The only thing they have is the heart center but it s so nasty I wouldn t even go there.

It was the worst hospital stay I ever experienced. I was there for 3 days no one allowed in to visit me, no one to care how I was treated. I felt like I was a inconvenience to them. I was told I could eat at 9 o clock am after going 36 hours no food and I finally ate at 7 pm. I didn t even get water but once a day. Do yourself a favor go somewhere else unless you want to be treated worse than a criminal. I gave them 1 star because I actually lived to get out.

Went in a few years ago with hubby late night. Got sent in the back to wait for doctor.....custodians we're prettying up the hallways.....the room...OMG!!! DISGUSTING old blood stains on cabinets and equipment. Mysterious old stains on the floors. My mind went crazy wondering what grossness it could possibly be. I have NEVER seen a medical facility so dirty. They should put as much efforts in cleaning the dungeons as they do the halls. Also had a friend lose a grandchild because her daughter sat in the waiting room doubled over in pain for over 4 hours. By the time they left went to Harbor view who immediately took her back the innocent child was dead. I've heard stories and try not to judge but felt compelled to share my own personal experience.

My boyfriend was admitted yesterday after emergency surgery on his arm and I came this evening to see him. He was NOT FED ALL DAY, NO WATER, NO PAIN MEDS, the poor man didn't even have a gown on, he was completely naked. I finally got the charge nurse in to ask her what was going on, she stated that he was sleeping all day and never asked for meds or food. THIS HOSPITAL IS A JOKE>>>DO NOT TAKE ANYONE HERE!!! I felt extremely uncomfortable even leaving him under these nurses "care" and will be contacting hospital administration in the morning. This is unacceptable and I will be reporting these nurses.

Had appt for MRI last Thursday. Got there 10 minutes late. Offered to go home and reschedule. They said no, we will work you in, but might be awhile. This was 9:30. ...1PM tech came out and said we would have to reschedule. Rescheduled for Sat. AM. Appt. 12PM. I got there 9:30 by error. Offered to go home and come back later. They said no, might be able to do early. I dated there from 9:30 til 1PM, for a 12"00 appt. I said to myself I will wait til 1:15. 1:15"came. NO one around. I left. Registration was closed by then. I res scheduled for tomorrow, Wedesday, at Harborview. Very unprofessional and never even a call later. I learned my lesson. GO to Sentara.

Overall, my experience has been decent. The staff in the outpatient lab area leave a lot to be desired. They re snarky, want to talk inappropriately of politics with patients, and will tell you other patients without appointments are more important than patients with appointments.

However, the surgery team I had was incredible. Nurse Jackie in the OR was such a boss! She was amazing and made me feel super comfortable. She explained everything that was about to happen minute by minute and was extremely attentive. The nurses I had on the 2nd floor after surgery, Roshelle (spelling might be off) and Maritza were amazing. I think my favorite person during the whole experience was the nursing assistant overnight, Sapphire. She was great. She encouraged rest, was right on time with vitals, and when I hit the call bell she was at my bedside in a matter of seconds. I really enjoyed having her as part of my care team!

Overall, I m impressed but the outpatient lab staff almost ruined my experience enough that I considered cancelling surgery. That s the only complaint I have.

::::::::::EDIT::::::::::
I am in the middle of another stay at Maryview on 5 south due to some complications from my previous surgery. Review is knocked down to 1 star. Avoid this place at all cost. Dr Adams is an amazing surgeon and his bariatric program was super easy to work with and whatever but the nursing staff at this hospital is a joke & outright dangerous, other than Sapphire who I got to run into AGAIN and she was awesome all over again. I will probably die before I go back to another hospital, unless Sapphire, Nurse Jackie, and Nurse Edna from nights on 5 are there.

I didn't want to give any stars. The most disgusting understaffed unprofessional hospital. Blood spots and urine puddles on bathroom floor. I refused to wear my shoes on the floor in my house after leaving out of there. I had chest pains and was left in room after doctor and intern left for an hour before I called and asked where was my nurse or doctor. I was told I was over looked basically forgotten because the were in the middle of a shift change when I was bought in. IT was a very very horrible experience. No one came to get the urine to test nor to hook my blood pressure cup back to machine nor my EKG things to the machine for about 30-45 min mean while I'm calling for nurse no one comes. I took off my unplugged bp cup and took off the EKG things and called to ask someone to remove my IV. They wanted me to wait another hour for them to finally test the urine after I had already spent close 5 hours there. I left untreated and will not go back. I had to stare at blood splatter on the door in my room the entire visit.I moved here over 20 years ago and it was called Murderview I see their still living up to their name. Pitiful and sad. Shut that unorganized shell of a building down. On my way in I passed a lady coming out to smoke go to her car something she comes in a few minutes later to ask have I been checked in I say no she calls me to the desk. I'm like wow I thought she was a patient or visitor leaving not a employee/check in person. So tacky.

Brought my father here due to pain. Was brought in by ambulance. I had to tell the nurse that he was NOT going to go into a room full of blood. Second room is disgusting. Garbage all over the place. Not sure last time housekeeping came through. This is my second time here. While I was sitting in his room I could hear staff yelling at one another. I have spoken to patient advocate before regarding the care here. She assured me that was not their standard. It appears to be exactly their standard. Next time I will pay the extra $245 to go to Norfolk general. This is our last time here. I have pictures of the garbage in here. But don't know how to post them. Even the EMTs had nothing good to say about this place.

Bon Secour MaryView Medical Center doesn't even deserve one star. I have had so many issues with this medical center that its caused stress on myself and my mother. "dr." Nancy Morewitz didn't give me any info about the epilepsy that I was only diagnosed by her. The important information I should have been told by her I found out later by my new neurologist the wonderful Dr. Karim. The receptionist at maryview didn't fax over my medical records three times when I switched neurologists. I felt completely disrespected and let down by them. I'm already going through enough with the seizures I've been having for them to just ignore my requests or be just blatantly lazy. Do not go through them if you're looking for proper patient care. I repeat, DO NOT.

DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU ARE BLEEDING TO DEATH! If I could give negative stars, I would. I went to get a spider bite that turned purple looked at. First of all, they claimed it was not a bug bite and tried to refer me to a dermatologist. Second, I went in the middle of a blinding migraine that was so painful I could barely stand. They refused to talk to me until I took off my sunglasses (even though I was crying from the pain) then they dismissed me as a drug user and sent me home with information on how to treat a headache. For anyone who doesn't know, A MIGRAINE IS SO MUCH MORE THAN HEAD PAIN. Calling it a headache (especially when I'm crying and trying not to throw up) is extremely insulting.

If I could give no stars I would. I'm not from this side of the water. I work in Portsmouth and got sick at work, and this was the closes hospital. My boyfriend and dropped me off at the front doors to grab a wheel chair. One of the nurses came out to assist him. He wheeled me in the middle of the waiting area and said " okay somebody will take care of you in a bit, I'm clocking out. I sat wondered where were the registration people. None to be found. The triage nurse was having a personal conversation with another patient. A lady behind me stated she had been waiting in the waiting room for a hour, then she started throwing up a black substance. The triage nurse finally came after my family decided to take me to Sentara Norfolk General. She was rude saying " well do you want to be triaged or not while tugging on my wheel chair, as if im not in pain. I said no and she stops the wheel chair and I continued to roll. NEVER AGAIN! Ill take the drive back to my side.

Worked there for four years and always provided superior care. Unfortunately the employer doesn't assist the employee in providing A1 care. I'm so glad to be apart of a different Healthcare provider that 'practices' excellence not pretends it. I really do feel bad for patients that don't have other options or that go to Maryview out of ignorance.

I visited my father in the hospital today in ICU and stopped at the nurses station to get his room. The two ladies at the station told me where to go and I proceeded there. I walked into his room to greet him and he was aware that I was there but could not speak. I waited for a moment and to see if he would eventually say something then decided to go back to the nurses station to get an idea of his status. She told me that his nurse had just transferred another patient but I could wait in his room and she would send her down. I returned to his room sitting in the window seal because my father was in and out. There were about five different members of the staff walking by as I waited. Finally, a gentlemen came in and said ma'am if you are going to be in here then you should be wearing a gown and gloves because my father has something contagious. Not once did the nurses desk say to me that I need to wear a gown and gloves and the sign the was posted was not directly on his door. So now I am furious because of the lack of communication and the possible risk of me catching it and I am pregnant. They need to do a better of job of protecting visitors by making it known when gloves and gowns need to be worn. I pray that I will not get sick but if I do I will be contacting an attorney.

I have crohns disease and another undiagnosed digestive disorder. My teeth are bad from throwing up my whole life. I guess they don't treat digestive disorders at Maryview... Worst hospital experience I have ever had.

It's such a shame the very place you go to get well is the same place that harms you! My mom have been in the hospital for over a month now and NOT because she wasn't getting better. It was because the doctors was giving her medication(s) that she was having side effects to. They even put her on an antidepressant when we were clear on her NOT having any antidepressants! NOW, they're refusing to release her into the care of her children because "there's no dialysis chair available"! Yeah right! No, you're clearly hidding something but you will be found out. So many doctors in and out and none of them can give her decent care. The nurses are just as bad. Outside of a few of them who really have the heart for their jobs. I appreciate them! I would NEVER recommend this hospital not even to my dog! I'm so disappointed not just in the hospital but in the entire 4th floor medical staff as well. I feel so sorry for the patients! PLEASE DON'T TAKE YOUR FAMILY THERE! PLEASE!

If I could give no stars I would. So last Wednesday I went to visit my friend who was staying there for a few days after a procedure. The male nurse that came to check on her (over an hour after she pressed the call button ) He came in gave her some medication, fiddled with the computer then realized she was empty on her IV began messing with the injection site removed the bandage, left the room, returned a few moments later replaced the bandage, flushed the IV, swapped the bag and left. THE ENTIRE TIME he NEVER USED GLOVES or SANITIZED HIS HANDS. I then see him walk into the next patients room and start that whole process over with no gloves or sanitation on the other person. I have since tried to contact the patent advocate and file a claim. I have called and left messages every day with out a return phone call. Also they also gave her no blanket just a thin sheet for the entirety of her stay (5 days) she was so cold she had the heat in there turned up to 85 and was still not warm enough.

My mother arrived at the emergency room Sunday afternoon and after several tests was told she was being admitted. 24hrs later we're still waiting in the emergency room for a room! I truly understand the emergency staffs dilemma, but to keep promising a room to a woman with heart problems and she's still waiting is ridiculous! Someone needs to review and revise the process of admissions and bed availability.

If I could give this place NO stars, I would! This is the nastiest filthiest hospital I have ever stepped foot in. The floors were disgusting, looked like housekeeping hadn t touched them in a while. Got to the pre-op area and a needle cap got stuck on the outside of my shoe! I hightailed it out of there, wouldn t dare have a procedure there if the places I could see were so bad. We addressed it with management and they didn t seem at all concerned, like our complaints were an every day occurrence. My vets office is cleaner than this joint! RUN!

I sat in an empty waiting room for 30 minutes before a triage nurse called me back , she was horrendously rude & asked the same question numerous times . Then I was immediately taken back to an emergency room where I waited for an hour ,then I went up to the charge desk, and Tameka snapped at me that shed be right in , 15 minutes later she came in and asked the same exact questions that the triage nurse asked then she left . 45 minutes later Carolina came in to take the urine sample I had ready for them as soon as I came into my room . then another 45 minutes went by and at this point it was 7AM , I went up to the charge desk and told them I wanted my discharge papers and I'd be better off just dealing with my severe pelvic pain . they sent me back to my room where both of the nurses ran in and asked me more of the same question . It's not almost 8 AM and I still have not been helped . I tried to give this place a chance but it is horrendous . Murder view is it's nickname and now I know why.

My mom was there in a catatonic stat after seizure...

My mom was there in a catatonic stat after seizures, she was there for 2 days before they gave her an iv. I had to leave work for a whole week to make sure they were actually carrying for her as a patient and not a house plant. Seizures and going to the ER over a three day period and two whole days admitted there in a catatonic state before they administered IV fluids or any medication. Really think about that...so I dropped everything I had going on and started managing the situation. Asking lots and LOTS of questions and always being nice and understanding and polite, it was sickening considering...
Me, my grand ma, my husband, and her husband all took turns to make sure she was NEVER alone there and it was hard and grueling because she is a handful even when she's herself and now she was like a 5 year old at times. Once she woke up the nurses didn't even try to hide their disdain for her from us, it was pathetic and they were apathetic. There's a reason that this place is locally known as murderview. I could go on about the nitty gritty details but just take my advice and never leave your loved alone under the care of these nurses,. If you love them then be there with them to make CERTAIN they are being cared for properly.

Kept calling the wrong person when Wife had procedures done there during the current pandemic. (2 knee surgeries and a neck surgery) told her next procedure won't be done here. I'm actually really embarrassed to have been born here 32 years ago. Do yourself a favor don't come here unless you are in a life or death situation or can get triaged then transferred to another hospital. The place has the nickname Murderview!
