Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee: Igniting the Power and Promise of Youth
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee is a non-profit organization that has been serving the community since 1975. The organization's mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. By providing children with positive role models, Big Brothers Big Sisters helps them reach their full potential and become successful adults.
The organization's programs are designed to help children facing adversity, including those from single-parent homes, low-income families, or those who have experienced trauma. Through its mentoring programs, Big Brothers Big Sisters provides children with caring adult mentors who offer guidance, support, and encouragement.
One of the most important aspects of the program is its focus on building strong relationships between mentors and mentees. The organization carefully matches each child with a mentor based on shared interests, personality traits, and other factors. This ensures that each child receives personalized attention from a mentor who understands their unique needs.
Big Brothers Big Sisters offers several different types of mentoring programs to meet the needs of different children in the community. Its traditional community-based program matches volunteers with children in one-to-one relationships that last for at least one year. During this time, mentors spend time with their mentees doing fun activities like playing sports or going to museums.
The school-based program is another option for volunteers who want to make a difference in a child's life but may not have as much free time outside work hours. In this program modelled after traditional tutoring sessions where volunteers visit schools during lunchtime or after school hours once per week for an hour-long session where they can help students complete homework assignments or engage in other educational activities.
In addition to these two main programs offered by BBBSMM there are also specialized programs such as "Bigs in Blue" which pairs police officers with youth; "Beyond School Walls" which brings together corporate partners like Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company employees as mentors; "Mentoring 2 Match" which focuses on matching LGBTQ+ youth with supportive adult role models; "Amachi Mentoring Program" which serves youth impacted by incarceration; among others.
Volunteers play an essential role in helping BBBSMM achieve its mission by donating their time as mentors or supporting fundraising efforts through donations or sponsorships. The organization relies heavily on donations from individuals and corporations alike so it can continue providing quality services without charging fees for families served by BBBSMM.
