The airport is fine, the Stansted Express rail station adjacent to the terminal is a plus. Security runs smoothly, the waiting room in the main hall has also recently been renovated and there are many seats. No working free wifi (it is, but connecting to it borders with a miracle) and power sockets. The cleanliness of the toilets will, unfortunately, help you to heaven.

Needless to say, the organization is better on all counts compared to each airport. Personal kind service. The policewoman who welcomed us and smiling at hand and perfect directions from everywhere
Greetings Nice to be here on this Stansted Airport, I Untill now always came to LONDON by Heathrow but this time It was good to be here.... Very good staff and It was nice to be here... Thank you so much..
I flew several times from and to Stansted and this airport is a disaster.
I had to wait 1 hour for the baggage and that late in the evening - outside of rush hours.
At the security checkpoints, you are randomly sent back to the body scanner after the usual pass-through scanner, only to be scanned for a third time by the staff. This has not happened to me anywhere else in my proven "airport outfit". And it takes time to do it three times.
Then you will be passed through countless shops. The gates are displayed on the scoreboard shortly before boarding - probably so that the passengers stay as long as possible at the shops. Meanwhile, you will not find an information counter in vain. Once you've made it through the maze of shopping opportunities, you'll have to hop on a train or walk 10 minutes, depending on the gate.
In addition, almost all flights to and from Stansted are regularly delayed - if they are not even canceled. Who can, should definitely avoid this airport.
A low cost airport with many people. To go through passport / DNI control on arrival (if you travel with children) the wait in line is endless. At the exit, to go through all the controls, the waiting time is just as long. Airport staff mostly unpleasant. The border staff (passport control) is the only thing that is saved in this place - the only ones that treated us with a little humanity and kindness.
I already had my prejudices due to the contributions written here. However, these were not confirmed for me. The airport was already jam-packed at 5 a.m., but the handling in the security area was quick, friendly and professional. Despite the many people, we were through quickly. Yes, the walk through the duty-free shopping area was a bit long, but not annoying. You have more or less at other airports. Thanks to the "S-Bahn" I was quickly at my gate 38. The cleanliness at the airport is also good on the toilets.
It is good airpot for the car to get to but the prices of the parking are much too high. to get tehre by the train or bus from London is far to long and problematic .
The airport is always hectic. The layout does not help with masses of people getting through. The waiting time to get through security is unreasonable at best. Signage for departure gates are rare to find and mostly unclear. Always be there 2 hours before your flight to leave you enough time to reach your plane in time.
A small but quite an efficient airport managing several local flights in Europe. The airport is near the one of the biggest cities of the World. Ryanair seems to be the primary flight as there are many planes around from them.
Airport very well located, because thanks to the train from the exit of the airport, I was able to reach the center of London in less than forty minutes.
Amazingly helpful staff. I had a bad leg injury and was limping towards the passport control, without me even asking, the staff noticed me struggling and directed me towards the fast lane and helped me through the passport check. Many thanks to the border staff!
Flew to and from this Airport a few times now and I definitely won't be back after my last experience. Security think they are the police and treat everyone like rubbish, I was shoved away from my 8 month old daugher by a very rude security women and she swabbed my daughers hands without me there as she wouldn't let me near until I was searched. I did send a email to complain but didn't get no response. The place is a complete joke
Clean and compact airport with all necessary facilities. Can be good value for long term parking (advice to pre-book on line) short term parking also available and pick up points. Quick access from London by public transportation: train or coach. Proffesional, friendly staff.
I had twice my flight cancelled, first time a few month ago a bus went on fire in front the airport and they shut down all the airport for a full day and even more and the second time, today, there was a unspecified problem after a 15 minutes thunderstorm (that took place yesterday) and they close everything as well. Now, I can understand the safety reasons and everything, but shutting down everything, causing a lot of problems for thousands of passenger, is unacceptable.
Good airport, clean, organized but very far away takes 2h to the center of London (Bus), I advise Easybus as it is much cheaper than the ryanair transfer
What a mess! The staff, almost everyone I had to talk to were rude, aggressive and clueless! Everything has been designed to stress you out! The airpor is hot and you have to pay for absolutely everything separately! The security check is an absolute mess! Staff shouting abuse every second. I rather pay triple but never travel from this hell of an airport! Worse place ive ever been to! Even the WHSmith staff were rude and unhelpful
Worst airport on the planet. Avoid at any cost as there are always delays of several hours, especially with Ryanair. I regularly fly from London to Cologne and my family members fly the same route and every time, literally every time there is a minimum delay of 2-3 hours without any information from the airport or the airline. Avoid at any cost as it will upset you unnecessarily.
Reading all the negative reviews, I want to not have to deal with them, but my experience has been very positive.
Arriving, checking documents was fast, friendly staff.
For the return, the security check was also hasty, it is enough to respect the rules and regulations for baggage / liquids at full capacity .. in Italy, in some airports, they really do go through everything! Needless to complain if here respect the practice;
The airport is really crowded, you can't always find a seat. The gates are many and far away from duty free, walking ~ 15 minutes walking sent.
In conclusion, my TIPS: - Arrive very early, especially if you leave during peak times (practically all day except late night) -Respect baggage and safety regulations .. if you have doubts about something, throw it away. -Eye not to have torn or excessively damaged document.
The costumer service helpline is extremly bad. I tried to get hold of one of the advisors and nothing. The automated bot answered and was not helpful at all.
Pick up/drop off point - crap service at exit gates. Was unable to pay by card normal way, have tried 2 different cards. When spoken with assistant via intercom have been advised that bank rejected my cards and to try another gate. Tried More
Well, reading some of the comments above I was a little scared by the bad reviews but in reality this airport is very different from how it is described! It's super comfortable, clean, full of shops that are very useful if you arrive two hours earlier like me! And yes, it is always better to be preventative and to arrive early than to run all the way and risk losing the flight. Because if you have missed your flight it is certainly not the airport's fault! Above all, there are information boards everywhere, chairs everywhere, bars and fast food everywhere, clean bathrooms, friendly staff. To get to some gates you need to take a shuttle train that runs every 5 minutes. Others can be reached on foot in 5 minutes. The gate number is announced half an hour before the latter opens. So you will have the chance to reach it without problems and without rides. As for the connections, I was fully satisfied. I took the bus both on the way there and back. Better to book in advance on the site you pay much less! Although I had booked for a certain time they made me take it even earlier as the flight landed early. In fact they explained to me that once booked you can use it in the most convenient time! On the outward journey we spent about an hour and a half and for the return an hour was scarce (but it was early morning, then traffic). So for my experience I vote 10.
Clean airport but very far. Large airport, provide a significant amount of time to access the door. Satisfactory dutyfree space. Travel long enough to get there.
Waiting almost 2 hours baggage, that was supposed to be hand luggage but thanks to Ryanair we are still waiting for out luggage. A lot of people and looks like nothing is happening. Worse than terrible Luton..
After 2.5 hours waiting in my plane we were asked to get out due to a fire in a bus somewhere in the airport that happened 3 hours ago. They sent everyone from every flight in the departures room because people had to evacuate the gate affected by the fire (and they wouldn't be sure who checked in?). Because of the bus fire at 4pm they shut down the airport for the day and tried to make us leave. Ofc the wifi never works. No communication from the staff, they just asked us to rebook online, and I'm sure there would be a much more efficient way to handle it. I had to rebook a new flight in 3 days as it was my connecting airport, stay in a hotel, and lose a lot more money than I will gain from the refund. Imagine if something worst had happened...
I've travelled successfully a few times via this airport but this experience is negative enough to rate it 1 star
Had to wait for 4 hours just to hear that my flight was cancelled, additional hour just to get my baggage back. Not to mention the fact that they didn't only cancel our flight, but 2 others so the queues for refunds were massive, spent another 5 hours there leading up to aprox. 1 am... It was kind of depressing seeing one gate agent trying to sort thousands of people while other gate agents were walking past or just looking on their phones or standing and talking to their colleagues...The staff (who were not working but sitting and smiling at the situation) were disrespectful. All in all, spent a thousand on the flight including the 12 hour waiting time in the airport just to return home in the next 24 hours - there was no clear reason as to why our flight was cancelled and all we were told was "there is an injured passenger" , "our flight crew is not here yet" and "we are going to change the plane". Fantastic.
Does get busy although the aorport is improving much more with the new renovation. Flown from here lots and will continue doing so. Although this airport gets busy. Make sure you are here in plenty of time before your flight. My other issue is that you have to walk through lots of shops in order to get to departures. However I would recomend this airport.
Absolute disgrace. Security took an age - when I complained the woman blamed the passengers. I pointed out how many unmanned lanes there were - only about half open and they are happy for people take more than 30 mins to get through security.
Will choose other airports in future. No customer service ethos or value for people's time.
Disabled toilets used by families who are not disabled. Not clean. One disabled toilet had a broken seat. Flight arrived late and took 2.5 hours to get luggage through. Luggage was taken off plane and left on tarmac as staff had gone home.
Poorly organised and what s actually put me off of that Airport is the staff! They re so rude!!!!! I m a taxi driver and have been to many airports and there was no problems ever! Staff was always friendly. This time I was driving my parents there so they could go on their holiday. We were shocked. We went to the desk next to custom control and I stand in front of 2 employees. If I didn t say anything to them they would never ask if I need help (standing right in there faces they kept ignoring me). When I asked how my parents can get to gate 13 the guy said to me they need to get on a train. So I asked what train? He repeated the same thing so I asked again what train and then he answered laughing at me do I hear the echo? I explained it s the first time I m there so finally he gave me directions. What an a**hole!!!! I should ve remembered his name and complain so he s lucky!!!!! Never had such a bad experience. On top of that they don t know what they re doing, women at check in desk looked stressed, toilets are dirty, car parking charges are a joke, they only get 2 stars for good signs outside of the airport, with them you can easily get where you want. This is the last time we will be using this airport. Terrible, shocking! I ll make sure my passengers will know about my experience!!!!
Not my favourite of the London airports ... It's facilities aren't kept particularly clean. But it's home of th budget airlines and in keeping of my expectations
A huge airport where people go on Low Cost flights. The problem is not the airport, it is the companies and the travelers. It has many services, large areas and everything is quite well indicated. Communication with London is very good. It has quite a few stores inside, so go ahead.
Good alternative to Gatwick and Heathrow. Better than Luton. Good food and shopping options. A little busy but overall pretty smooth going. Bus and train transfers to London.
Addressing Stansted. What is wrong with you? Why are you like this, I'm genuinely concerned. Having hundreds of people arriving and cramming them into a small area and closing everything is most certainly not groovy. Who hurt you... Why are you taking it out on us. I hope someone takes note of your vast majority of 1star reviews and helps you to better yourself. We're not mad Stansted. We just know you can be better. Sincerely a concerned visitor to your human cattle farm.
Disgrace. Upon landing, we had to wait it about 20 minutes in the bus to take us to terminal and we missed our coach transfer.
Upon departure three quarters of the ryan air self baggage check in did not work but we finally managed to check them in. Walked over to security and it took an 1 and 15 minutes and we missed our flight!!! Staff very rude and unhelpfull. If you are flying out from this airport, please allow yourself 3 hrs. Total Chaos!!!!!
Nice, comfortable, modern, but very far from the city.
Very meticulous security service, like everywhere else in England. Be sure to transfer all the liquid into zip bags. Otherwise, it works quickly and clearly.
What a great and arrogant airport making the non-sleeping policy that squeeze the crowd in arrival, instead of the terminal where they have to board. Silly british wisdom.
The waiting time for security check was a joke. Even past midnight it was chaos and completely unorganised. Not only that, staff are completely rude and also not as helpful as the stanstead airport webiste make it to be. During the wait for the security check, i saw An elderly man s luggages that had fallen on the floor, the staff that had clearly seen it happen (it fell right in front of her feet) just stood there, rolled her eyes and waited for him to pick them up so she could get through. It s appalling to see such rude staff however not all were like that but a majority were, but if i could i would report that specific person as she was plain stuck up and rude.
Arrived today from Cagliari at 12.20pm and spent 50 min at the empty counter as they did not have staff at "All other passports" to serve the queue. We have a 10 month old and the wait was unpleasantly long. When somebody in the queue inquired as to when they will come to let us through, the airport personnel was very defensive, almost rude in mumbling something incoherent from distance
About arrivals hall in concise words: cold, dirty, not enough places to sit and unpleasant staff waking up tired people who are desperately looking for any available space to rest, be it corridor in front of the toilet. Burger King, which is the only restaurant, closes around 1 am. To make things worse, night communication to London is pretty much not exsistent, so forget about night drive with National Express (first one at 4 am) or train.
Burger King fast food shop is open until 24:00, boots drug store, snack shop.
There are trains (fast, on time), buses (cheap, congested), TAXI can reach multiple destinations in London.
Few flights from 00 to 06 take off and land, and people in the 23 to 04 lobby are the most crowded. There is no charge, there are few chairs, and you cannot lie down. It is not an airport where you can spend the night.
Buon viaggio,
Take plenty of time to travel from London to Stansted (1.5 hours by metro and train). The moment you arrive at Stansted you first have to get to the departure hall. Once you pass through customs you pass a horribly long pendulum of shops and eatery (15 minutes before you go through it) and then you arrive at the gate with a train and some escalators at least 2 hours away. Ryanair staff is very friendly and helpful
Decent airport . After reading some of the negative reviews I was worried a bit . Don t understand why people compare stansted to Heathrow . Stansted is a smaller airport and the facilities are ok here. You just have to use common sense and arrive early during busy periods like weekends / bank holidays .
Far from the city but easily accessible by train or bus. Really big with many shops of all kinds, if you have a flight and you are among those who arrive hours before, you will certainly find something to do.
The security operations are atrocious. The delays to many passengers caused by extreme security policies and over zealous staff is unacceptable. Obviously airport security needs to be strict but Stansted Airport has in my view has an approach which exceeds the norm and needs to be changed. My bag was sent for a hand search for no apparent reason leading to a wait of over 30 minutes and I received no apology. Sort your game out!
A very poor experience that envolved waiting in their main seating area which was crowded and uncomfortable. I suggest they expand their seating and the amount of bars, restaurants etc.
