Aviano airport is adjacent to the town of the same name which is about seventy kilometers north of Venice and is managed by around 3,100 military personnel and 800 civilians.
The history of Aviano airport dates back to the dawn of military aviation in Italy when, in 1911, it was used as a pilot training center and, during the First World War, as a starting point for offensive missions against the Austro-Germans. The airport was officially baptized with the names of Captain Maurizio Pagliano and Lieutenant Luigi Gori, who died in May 1917.
Between the two wars, Aviano was the seat of training, hunting and bombing departments of the Royal Air Force.
During the Second World War, Luftwaffe units also found a base there, until the destruction of the infrastructure under the Allied bombing.
The reconstruction of the airport was slow and complex; in 1952 the F-84G "Thunderjet" of the 51st Stormo Caccia were deployed in Aviano.
In 1955 the USAF arrived with the Detachment 1 of the 17th Air Force: in December of that year the first redeployment of American aircraft took place with a squadron of F-84F "Thunderstreaks". The rotation cycle of USAF units in Aviano ended in 1968 with the F-100 "Super Saber" fighter-bomber.
From the 1950s to the 1980s, with some suspensions, Aviano was the site of grandiose aerial events called "NATO Day".
Initially, the American department in charge of managing the presence of the USAF aircraft in Aviano was Detachment 1 of the 629th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron, later called 7227th Combat Support Group. The department then became 40th Bombardment Group, 40th Tactical Group and finally 40th Tactical Support Wing.
In 1992 the 401st Fighter Wing was transferred from Torrejon (Spain) to Aviano with their own F-16 "Fighting Falcon". In April 1994, as part of a program to enhance the tradition of the most famous USAF departments, the 41st FW was renamed 31st FW.

The worst two years of my life. I never worked less than 12 hours a day because Aviano s work tempo is insaneI never even got to travel due to mission requirements so I couldn t experience Europe.
Worst base I ve ever been to, worst supervision I ve worked for, will never go back. I hope the Russians turn Aviano into an atomic crater

I live in San Leonardo Valcellina, no longer able to live ... Airplanes at all hours, a deafening noise, but is it possible
American military base
American military base
At the time it was an Italian military infrastructure, now in use by the US Air Force !!
Inside there is everything, it's a real small town !!!
Homes, shops and more ...
It is NOT accessible to everyone .... you certainly cannot introduce yourself and say I want to enter :-)
There is the site and an fb page
They have their own Police who also run outside the base, but still in the Aviano area where there are American civilians who live and manage nice premises .....
Very well lit in the evening.

Great location, but limited selection of everything on base. Definitely shop on the economy if you eat more than TV dinners. It's similar in price and the quality is much better. The BX is laid out wired and hardly has what you want. Just default to the SME in pordenone, and your local grocery store.

Passed through here on my way back to Afghanistan. Excellent base in a wonderful country. I got to spend about a week or so in Trieste and Venice while I was there as well.

I was there as a USAF member until my service was finished. Then got married to a lady air force member and stayed as a dependent civilian until her tour was finished. Total of 8 years there. Remember 30 minutes to Piancavallo where you snow ski or 45 minutes to the beaches near Venice. Great life, great people, great markets with foods and wines. Sorry I had to leave. Would return if I could.
