A Great place for Birding without all of the people walking like you get at the Wetlands, not that exercising is bad, it's just noisy and scares the birds away sometimes, by all means keep up the good work by walking! But for birding, this is the place, I saw 3 birds that I've never seen before in just 1 day. Hope I didn't offend anyone with my comments, just wanted to explain how much better this place is for birding.

I'm sorry if your experience was less than satisfactory...
No matter what anyone posts, this is Florida: alligators, yeah, they're aggressive; yeah, there's oppressive heat; there's bugs, too... this park is on the fringes of the wilderness, aka, the Everglades. This is what's left of Wild Florida after people come here to live, cut up the glades, and develop the hell out of the area... then you get problems - more people, traffic, e.t.c... Florida is #3 in population of US, passing NY...
The Everglades is a treasure-a gift to the world, there's nothing like it on the planet! And it's in our backyard!... we need to preserve the glades... by visiting, not bashing, the parks.

Loxahache is a federally run experimental area divided up in many sections. This allows researchers to change the environment in some of the areas predicting what will happen to the Everglades if these changes come through.
The area is a magnet for wildlife of many kinds. The birds are the most visible and they attract many birdwatchers who will find an abundance of species.

They have a giant alligator that hangs out under the fishing pier. I think his name is George but don't quote me on that. They also have a boardwalk that goes through a cypress swamp. It's about a fifteen minute walk thru. It is a great place to bring out of town guests. Bring bug spray.

Gem! Walk the cypress swamp boardwalk trail or the gravel impoundment trails. Great opps to see migratory or local birds, alligators, and much more. Bike trail at boat launch too. Rent a canoe and paddle through the Everglades.

The reserve is very beautiful! It is a calm place to go especially in the evening with a trail that goes in a circle, another trail that goes literally forever, and another open marsh area with a very nice watchtower. It is very family friendly and a great place to go now since there aren't many people around! I gave it a 4/5 only because I was disappointed to not see any alligators, snakes, or special types of birds but there were many butterflies and amazing greenery. Definitely recommend!!

This place is magical and sacred.

This place is magical and sacred.

Better look up the meaning of the term "Wildlife REFUGE" because it means
animals are safe from being hunted, so what is with allowing alligator hunts here?

Shouldn't there be ONE PLACE IN FLORIDA at least where animals aren't hunted and killed? Or am I crazy?

What a great find - a hidden treasure! How did we not know this place existed. Awesome walking trails. The Cypress Swamp boardwalk gives you a great education and glimpses of the Everglades- you never know what you will see. We had 2 alligator sightings. Definitely worth a visit.

Gorgeous park to come out and enjoy a nice walk. Grasshoppers are super huge and can be a bit creepy to those who are not accustomed to insects and their existence. The mosquitos are huge it felt as well so try to bring some repellent or they will bite you any opportunity they can get. Overall great nature walk. They offer signs as well with historic and educational points of the swamps, plants, and information on the park. I believe their is a gift shop in the entrance which helps if you forgot the bug spray like me!

This is a great place to get away from everything to quiet peaceful nature. Rarely used, this birder and canoe paradise is very basic...small boat launch, boardwalk, and trails. Lots of gators to see as well. But be warned, this is a basic no frills park so come prepared.

Had been over ten years since I'd been here but general layout was the same with many nice upgrades. New boardwalks, tram service, rental booth for canoes/kayaks, very nice fishing dock added next to boat ramps. Only saw two gators the whole time but were there in the heat of day. Lubber crickets have us tons to laugh about because it's obviously breeding season lol tons of birds everywhere as well as Turtles/Tortoises.
