I have lived in the Harlem area for over 13 years and have never been to the Apollo. I loved the fact that the Apollo helped host the #stepitupnyc for the youth into performing arts. The show was amazing.

Smaller than expected from what I've seen on TV. The event I attended was packed and enjoyable. The seating was not however. I'm 6'0" and my knees were killing me after about an hour. I decided to stand in the back for the next two hours.

Always a wonderful show. The best people and so much history. Met two women from Sweden and was able to speak with them in BECK. There is nothing funnier than watching people show just how much talent they not only have, but are willing to share with us.

Iconic theater, central location close to subways/public transit, commercial spaces/shopping, and restaurants/night life. The theater is always able to attract top talent, and there are always seasonal and ongoing/recurring shows and events - maybe most notably amateur night, which if the opportunity arises - is not to be missed. The theater is distinctive, with its own lived-in feel (though ongoing maintenance work has kept the space lively, and current), and audience participation is part of the appeal. Highly recommended.

The Apollo Theater in New York City is one of the most famous popular music clubs in the United States and one of the most relevant in the history of African American music in the United States, since great performers like Ella took their first steps Fitzgerald or Michael Jackson. An Apollo Hall had been founded in New York City in the mid-1800s by Civil War General Edward Ferrero as a dance hall. After its lease expired in 1872, the building was converted into a theater, which closed shortly after the turn of the century.

From 1914 the theater opened doors in a new location and was managed until the Second World War by several Jewish families. Since the Apollo first opened in New York, it has become one of that city's top adult nightclubs, especially when it was run by two of the most influential people in its field - Jules Hurtig and Harry. Seamon. Open only to white spectators, Hurtig and Seamon's New Burlesque Theater would remain in operation until 1928 when Bill Minsky took it over and transformed it into the Apollo Theater on 125th Street. Sidney S. Cohen, a powerful theater owner, bought the Apollo in 1932, after Minsky's death. The Apollo Theater finally opened its doors to the African American public in 1934, 20 years after the first opening, presenting Jazz a la Carte. One of the first participants in the African American Amateur Night, a dancer who became a hit, was none other than Ella Fitzgerald.

Thank you for a great evening of entertainment, laughs and camaraderie. It's a great deal for entertainment. The lighting, talent of the house band, and emcees make it that much better. The theater is beautiful in itself.

Went for amateur night on Wednesday for a company outing. It was enjoyable and staff was helpful. There was mostly good talent; I would say you should go at least once. Not sure if I would go a second time (but it's a little out of my way for me).
