Words cannot describe how laughably bad the custom...
Words cannot describe how laughably bad the customer service is. They simply do not care about you or your health insurance related issues. Ridiculous hold times to get the most basic questions answered, only open M - F, 8 - 5. Did I say 5:00? I meant 4:30, and they mean 4:30 exactly. Do not call after 4, because by the time you wait on hold for 30 minutes minimum, their offices will be closed. It seems that they routinely screen calls near 4:00 - 4:30, because they know if they can hold out another 30 minutes, they won't have to talk to us annoying policy-holders. If you have any influence whatsoever at your place of work, strongly advise your HR department to stay far, far away from the horrible practices taking place at Allied National. Simply put, the available plans are bad and overpriced and the customer service is even worse.
The automated response when you first call in to Allied National is "we are experiencing higher than normal call volume, wait times are extended". This message never changes. Every single time I have called I have waited at the very least 20 minutes, which is absurd. If you can't afford to hire more workers to answer phones, stop taking on customers whose employees need their health insurance related questions answered.
I have typed this review up as I was waiting on hold to speak with one of their less-than-sympathetic reps, and although I am done reviewing them, I am still on hold. Currently at 18 minutes and 47 seconds. I will continue to share their horrible business practices.
When I started my job, I called Allied to make sure one of the medications I take was covered by them. They ensured me that it was (this phone call took the average 30 minutes). When I went to the pharmacy, they indicated this medication was not covered. I called Allied and waited on hold for roughly 30 minutes, again. As I looked through the medication formulary and benefits overview (while I was on hold, so I had ample time to read every word in the packet), the medication in question was clearly listed, the generic was clearly listed as well. I looked for any sort of disclaimer or exception, there were none to be found.
By the time I got someone on the phone, I was told that the medication in question is covered for people under the age of 18 only. I asked where in my benefit package or formulary that was listed, and was told "I don't know what you were sent". Great.
When I said I felt there were egregious misrepresentations in their benefit packages and formulary, and that I should maybe contact a lawyer about this, the rep quickly told me they can make an exception for this medication if my doctor signs a "prior authorization" for it, indicating that I do indeed need to take this medication. That is interesting and concerning on several levels, the first and most glaring concern is that a prescription written by a doctor is inherently "prior authorization". When I raised this point to the rep, they indicated that I could pay for the medicine out of pocket, but if I wanted to have it covered, I had to jump through their hoops (which are obviously designed to discourage policyholders from taking full advantage of their coverage). Fine, I can jump through their hoops, even though a signed prescription from my doctor is the definition of "prior authorization". The second thing I was concerned about is that the "exception" for this medication was only offered after I said I might need to contact a lawyer. To me, this speaks volumes to the business practices taking place at Allied National. They want to deny coverage whenever possible, unless you threaten litigation, then they will fulfill their mandate to provide you basic health insurance services. What kind of company operates this way? Do you really want to deal with a health insurer that you have to threaten litigation to get anything done with?
I am currently at 29 minutes 30 seconds on hold waiting to ask a very simple question. I am out of characters on this review, but I am still on hold. Avoid this company like the plague. You will only be frustrated
