Travis Review of Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

I hadn't been to a zoo in 25 years, and have never really been a fan of zoos in general, but this zoo was amazing. If the Swiss Family Robinson built a zoo, this is what it would look like - great layout and architecture, and excellent use of the land to creat this multi-level mountain-side almost theme park feel. I think they should get rid of the primates and elephants though.. their spaces just aren't big enough and they seemed fairly miserable. Other than that, I thought the zoo was absolutely fantastic, and I plan on coming back.
There are quite a few relatively steep pitches as you walk throghout the zoo - it was built into the side of the base of a mountain, so you can think of that to gauge what the walking is like - so wear good walking shoes. The paths are generously wide, and many families had strollers, so you'll be fine to bring a stroller or two if you have small children.
Even if you don't have kids, pay the couple dollars to feed the giraffes - that was a pretty awesome experience. Also, be sure to feed the birds - they'll ride your feeding stick with you if you're gentle.
Plan for about a 3-4 hour walk if you want to see the entire zoo. Also, unless it's summer, bring a jacket, too - the temp will drop rapidly, and far more than you may expect, once the sun goes behind the mountains, which is hours before full sunset.
