In front of Anne Frank house one of the most popular historical attractions of Netherlands. Anne Frank was a young Jewish girl who lived at the time of the Second World War. She along with her family moved to the Netherlands from Germany after Adolf Hilter and the Nazis came to power there in 1933 and made life increasingly difficult for Jews. Anne and her family went into hiding in this secret apartment in Amsterdam from 1942-1944.
While hiding from the Nazis the young girl Anne documented and described her life - the hardships her community went through and trauma of the eight people in the small apartment in her diary. Anne passed the time by chronicling her observations and feelings in her diary.
But in August 1944 Nazi Political Police (Gestapo) discovered Anne together with her family and the other people they were hiding with. Anne and her sister Margot sent to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. There the two girls died of typhus shortly before the camp was liberated by the British Army on 15 April 1945.
Anne's diary became one of the world's most widely known books. The book is known as The Secret Annexe or The Dairy of a Young Girl and has been the basis for several plays and films. Over the years the popularity of the diary grew, and in many schools it was included as part of the curriculum, introducing Anne Frank to new generations of readers. This famous and bestselling books of all time was first published in 1947. It has been translated into almost 70 languages. It is said that this book is one of the most widely read accounts of the Holocaust and war literature.
There cannot be a trip to Amsterdam without a visit to this house first.
